This is how good Flea is: Stevie recorded that opening riff on his clavinet through a Mu-Tron envelope filter pedal (producing that signature funk auto-wah effect), but Flea is playing it straight here (even though he usually has a filter on his board). The only musician with the talent on the only instrument with the grunt to come close to Stevie’s original. Awesome. Just awesome.

I miss the 80's and early 90's really bad. When this performance aired, I was 15 years of age (1989) and couldn't believe how great RHCP were here. So heavy and focused with this heavy metal woven throughout. 😍 My mom already had us well trained in Stevie Wonder music and I forgot this was his song until after she was hearing us in the other room watching this and reminded us. Going into junior high school (was in the 9th grade at the time) the next morning and can still remember sitting in Home Room regretting not taping this performance. I wanted to see this thing again and again. RHCP have that intangible quality that make you want more and more. They were truly blessed with great talent.🏁💯♥️💓 Thank God we have this video here. Thank you so much and God bless you a million times to whoever is at this RU-vid channel for posting this.🏁🏁🏁 In all seriousness, concert video is so precious and is like a historical document.

Flea took an instrument meant to be picked repetitively but decided to play it like the trumpet player he is. He created a playing style that no one EVER had done on a bass...very similar to Jimi! Jimi took the electric guitar and did things to it that no guitar player ever had. It takes more than talent but inspiration AND vision to do that. To bass players like myself and many others Flea is a Bass God. Keep slappin, FLEA! oxoxoxo
