I love this album. One of the most exciting and interesting listening experiences I’ve had in a long time. It will only get better with more listens too.
I love this album so much. I've likely listened to it in entirety 6 times now. Just such a beautiful sounding album with songs filled with love and joy. I can't explain how great the album is in words. It's easily gone into my top 3 favourite peppers albums, along with By the way and Californication.
I liked Dream Canteen instantly and I have been listening to RHCP since Bloor Sugar Sex Magik. For some reason I love the effort of Unlimited Love, but this one is really musical genius.
Tempo Jesus. Do not hasten to conclusions, my friend. Due to the experimental themes, this album is a grower. The more you listen to it, the more one comes to understand and appreciate it. I love it! I also like the idea of combining both albums (unlimited love and this one) - so that’s it’s kinda like the two CDs (Mars andJupiter) off stadium Arcadium; after all, the last two albums released this year were spawned from one session. At some point, I will create a playlist combining unlimited love and return of the dream canteen - and listen to it on random. That’s some 34 songs (including Nerve Flip) - now my heart is satiated ❤️❤️❤️ what a GLORIOUS year for RHCP fans 💯
I'm definitely NOT going to hasten to conclusions, this is just my initial impression after hearing the tracks. I will definitely appreciate this album the more I listen to it, but some of the songs were quite surprising with the first listen. I also do view these albums as a double, and not 2 separate albums.
I don't like about half of Stadium Arcadium. However I'd say I like more than that of UL/DC. That said, I would love if RHCP compiled their B sides and Bonus tracks into an album. I find those some of their best material and it's a shame they're not in albums
Never fails to amaze me how you're able to pull similar songs from their huge catalogue to compare the new songs with, amazing. Been waiting on someone to point out the Grand Pappy Du Plenty vibe on In the Snow.
I really appreciate that! It helps when you have perfect pitch, so I can think of a previous song of theirs and know what key it's in without having to look it up. And yeah the Grand Pappy Du Plenty thing is one of my favorite comparisons I've had between two tracks, hahaha!
@@tempojesus5928 Listen to shadows collide with people, The will to death, DC EP, Curtains, Empyrean right now. Then go back and listen to Niandra Lades. All amazing albums. Inside of emptiness is good too. Don't even bother with anything after Empyrean, you won't like it haha
Unbelievable how difficult it is to find people reacting every part of the album, not just the lyrics or prominent guitar parts. Wonderful review and the album will definitely grow on you with more listens.
most of the "electronic" songs have a lot of john's work from his last 10 years as a solo artist, its like part of Maya album mixed with the groove of RHCP, i think is great and i love them
I, unfortunately, have not listened to John's solo work, so I cannot relate. But I'm sure your analysis is spot on. Clearly his recent history with electronic music has influenced this album.
Great review! I really love the way this album is pieced together and the concepts it offers. This feels like John's own "The Getaway" session and succeeds where The Getaway fell short imo.
Hey man! I couldnt wait to see your reaction for this album after it was released! Some of your reactions to the things on this album had me laughing so hard because they were how I reacted to them also. My favourites from the album are probably Reach Out, Fake as Fu@k, Bella, Shoot me a smile, Handful, Bag of Grins and Shape Im Takin. This album for me was everything I hoped for and was a better fit for me in general then Unlimited Love. Thank you for posting this!
You're most welcome my friend! I'm glad we reacted similarly to some sections. :) I have heard Shape I'm Taking, I didn't record a reaction to it, but it was excellent! I thought it should've been on the album for sure! You're welcome! Thanks for WATCHING this. :)
@@januariusa7847 I have listened to it numerous times since this video, and I do like the other parts of the song a little bit more, but I feel like the same journey could be achieved without that much dissonance.
I dig it in 3 playlists from both cd's... DISC 1- Return of (the tabernacle of Rock) Black Summer The Great Apes Carry Me Home Tippa My Tongue Reach Out Eddie It's Only Natural Here Ever After These Are the Ways The Heavy Wing Veronica DISC 2 - Unlimited Love (of The Funk of Soul) Aquatic Mouth Dance Peace and Love She's a Lover White Braids & Pillow Chair Shoot Me a Smile Bella Watchu Thinkin' Fake as Fu@k Handful Let 'Em Cry One Way Traffic Tangelo DISC 3 - The Dream Canteen (and the alt of jesuits) The Drummer Roulette Copperbelly Not the One Afterlife My Cigarette Bastards of Light Bag of Grins La La La La La La La La Poster Child In the Snow
I forgot to mention this a few minutes ago when discussing Bastards Of Light bridge, I really like your channel. Cool insights on a band that we both obviously have a lot of respect for! I’ve been listening to RHCP religiously since 1988 and they never cease to amaze and impress me. Keep up the cool videos!
After a few months of binge listening to this album, Carry Me Home stands above and beyond everything else (although I truly do love many of the other songs). I feel like Froosh really lets it out on that song. Their bluesiest song ever.
I really enjoyed your reaction! This album will grow on you like you have no idea. Very John-driven, excellently executed and full of tiny additions in the back that make them shine even more. Can’t wait for live performances of these songs.
28:43 Same reaction LMAO Is like, Bag of Grins absolutely holds up in the Outro, as if the whole weird musical experience before was developing to this (well obviously it wasXD)
Ok, when they step on the gas like that chorus on Fake as F@ck, thats the Chili Peppers I was longing for. That in your face funk that blasts your face. I didnt get it in either of these last two albums. I loved Eddie, reminded of BTW & SA. I love your reviews man.
The biggest "step on the gas" moment I had with Unlimited Love was the Guitar Solo on The Great Apes. That was sick! I'm so glad you enjoy the reviews, thank you so much!
Was waiting for your reaction! Had very similar first reactions to you but I kinda love the chaos of this album compared to UL. Feels like just a big jam session which I adore.
I see what you mean, but I like recorded music to have less chaos, and save that for live renditions of things. There are some great jams on here, I'll admit!
@@tempojesus5928 absolutely! Canteen is growing on me more and more everyday. What an excellent year to be a chilis fan. Love the reaction and can’t wait for the covers!
@@tempojesus5928 yea I feel for you! There is some tough stuff scattered across this album Chad really went off and had some incredible subtle kick pattern stuff and unique fills. Loving it.
The album was a little bit confusing on first listen for me, I put too much of an expectation on it after Eddie so I wasn’t expecting something so experimental for RHCP. After listening to it many many times though, I really enjoy this one. I really don’t think rhcp will ever make an album I don’t love tbh
I mean RHCP will always have some great content in their albums that I enjoy the least, it's more a question of "which albums do I enjoy more than others" rather than "which albums do I not like?" So I agree with that mentality. My Cigarette was just BAFFLING. Hahaha
i dont know how familiar you are with johns electronic music, but my cigarette has pbx, letur lefr and enclosure all over it, which just makes my heart soar. Just for some context:) ALSO, you have a very sly smile, i enjoy it. SUBSCRIBED, but only for the smile!
I am not familiar with John's solo work at all, so that definitely has a massive influence to play that I cannot identify. I'm glad you think I have a sly smile? Thanks for the sub, hahaha!
@@tempojesus5928 oh my goodness my friend! you have a john odyssey ahead of you. I am jealous. its all gonna be so NEW! pbx, letur lefr, and enclosure are the electronic works. Then theres the solo guitar based albums, Inside of Emptyness, Enclosure, Shadows collide, Curtains ect ect...AHHHHH! please, have fun and enjoy all thats to come:) Johns solo works are some of my favorite modern music, i promise you...none of it is unworthy of your time.
Such a nice reaction, hearing you compare each song to older ones just show your knowledge and appreciation for the band, and I thought every comment was valid. This is the first I'm seeing from you, so I'll definitely be going through your older stuff now!
I was waiting for this!! I love when you call out " if x had a baby with y" or sounds like this or that because i dont get it sometimes :D Exactly i hear a lot of josh on this. Also, the shape im takin is , for me, better than any song the album. You should do a separate video on it! :D
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I did hear Shape I'm Taking as well, and I completely agree! How it was left off the album is an absolutely flummoxing mystery!
@@tempojesus5928 Exactly. i think that one is a very Josh song as well.... :D (im a big big fan of josh this isnt a downgrade for me) Also it does fit the album vibe so thats another reason not to leave it off
@@tempojesus5928 okay , question, since you can hear literally any connection. Does the verses of the shape im takin sound like Move on up by curtis mayfield? :D
Uhhhh... I can see why you think that. Similar tempo, and a similar chord displacement with the resolving chord hitting on the & of 4, but I wouldn't call them that similar otherwise.
I was waaaaiting for this video hahahah Great as always! waiting for the drum covers now! I really looooved this album, the more you hear the more you find some great details, ypu'll see. Everyday I get obsessed by a different song (today for exemple I'm obsessed with afterlife and roulette) 😅
Awwwwwwww, how sweet! Thanks so much! We'll get those covers soon. :) I'm sure I'll appreciate it more the more I listen. I currently LOVE listening to Handful and Bella.
I love to see the reactions people have. Sometimes it takes me 3 or 4 listens to love certain songs, its cool to see open minded reaction like yours. There really is something for us all to relate to on this album. I think every song took me some time to grow in love with. But i love them all, the one that is taking me the most time is my cigarette ( cigarettes yuck!!), then bella, and roulette but, everytime i listen they grow on me some more. They are so creative . We must admit too that we are living in some f@cked up times to portray, this gives me a feel of a brainstorm and not leftovers! like the intro jam of hopefully many more albums to come with Frusciante. We love to hear them always!! I share the same enthousiasm as you do, and the way you appreciate just about every second. Cool review, cool album. This album is to me experimental with reminders of past , present and also has a pop rock glam kind of feel. I love when it gets funky, so I wish there would be a little more Hillel Influence next time. I love it, and I love growing in love with it slowly discovering all the details. Intelligent music seems to have to grow on me. So happy they released this for people who love their music ❤
I appreciate all of your insight! I think there's songs that I reacted to rather adversely on my Unlimited Love 1st Listen/Reaction that I enjoy a lot more now, as a result of being able to listen to them multiple times. It's good to see other people that have similar levels of enthusiasm. I'm glad you enjoyed the review and the album.
I also wanted to quickly point out that there is another bonus track for the Return of the Dream Canteen album, and that would be "The Shape I'm Takin''. It should be released on the official RHCP RU-vid channel in about a month and a half, just like Nerve Flip for Unlimited Love. It's a banger.
I've been waiting for this! I really appreciated your insights on Unlimited Love when it came to drums and previous Chili Pepper songs! I love that you point out the similarities to previous songs. My favorite is that Afterlife sounds like Warlocks, Animal Bar, and We Believe had a baby. Fake as F@ck and Copperbelly are my favorites!
Thanks man! I appreciate it! Oh I totally hear the Warlocks and We Believe! Not sure about the Animal Bar. I definitely love Fake as Fu@k. Copperbelly not so much.
What’s impressive is they recorded 50 songs during the same sessions. When AK said “don’t be surprised if another wheelbarrow of songs comes your way in the near future” earlier this year, ROTDC was probably all ready. They put out 36 already, we’ll see where the other 14 end up.
Technically they put out 38, as each album has a bonus track. I wouldn't be surprised if they did singles for the remaining 12 like they did with the I'm With You Sessions.
Got bored, decided to revisit the video, started reading comments and DAMN you really did respond to every comment. I will say this is one of the best Chili Peppers albums, but I want to stay away from FaF@ for personal reasons (I tend to do so for that OHM song you love, and the other songs that mention stuff of the sort). Doesn’t really put a damper on the band, it just makes it harder to manually skip over a song, and I wish the songs I disagreed with didn’t have some of the catchier grooves…
I do try to respond to all the comments :P Still not one of my favorites for sure, and I usually compromise all of my integrity for the sake of catchiness XD
I really think you should check out John's Electronica work. A lot of it is experimental, but I really like PBX Funicular Integlio Zone among a few others. I'm glad to see John has the artistic freedom to incorporate it into the album. The synths in the outro of Bag of Grins is such a subtle yet powerful touch.
@@tempojesus5928 If you haven't listened to any I would recommend starting with Inside of Emptiness for you. It's one of his heavier rock albums, and actually has Josh Klinghoffer on the drums.
@@Walamonga1313 I feel you, there is a lot of unpalatable work post Empyrean for me too, but quite a few of his electronica albums eventually grew on me. If you didn't really try listening to his most recent stuff at all you might have missed a few things. The 4 Track Guitar Music album is great, and reminiscent of Niandra Lades. Also check out Wayne if you haven't heard it yet. I also liked some of the beats he made for the Black Knights too.
First listen I did, avoided singles, so all fresh first time. I said after 7 songs to my boys that "it's got the I'm with you sessions all over it". I knew I had to find the long haired drummer on YT that I saw review UL lol. Typed in drummer cover of UL and here you are haha. Thanks for the review mate, and glad you heard what I did, even if I don't have the musical terminology to explain it haha
I have watched your reactions on UL and this new album 2x already. I love your review and reactions; you are fun and entertaining to watch. You also obviously know what you are talking about🙂
As a drummer myself, I actually really appreciate the electronic drums on My Cigarette and In The Snow. Chad is not only great because of what he can play, but also because he knows when not to play. I think it shows that Chad doesn't let his ego come in the way of making the music and can say "this track doesn't need my drums on it".
Yeah I agree with your sentiment, and I understand why they did drum machines on those two tracks. Obviously the timbre was an intended choice, and I think the Peppers clearly know how fantastic Chad is, and they're not doing it to diminish his output. I know there's been times in the past where Chad has either not drummed or played minimalist drums to make the composition better (Porcelain, Road Trippin', If, Hard to Concentrate, etc.), and that has all made sense. I think I'm just salty because with songs like The Zephyr Song, there was a drum machine that had Chad's drums on top that ADDED to the composition well. But it's also worth noting that having a drum machine playing a 2 bar loop as the full extent of your percussion section for a song means there's inherently less development, and I don't like that.
@@tempojesus5928 I wasn't trying diminish you opinions at all. I can certainly see your points and to some degree I agree with you, but even if My Cigarette is far from my favourite on the album, every time it comes on it totally hypnotize and I'm in a trance. As you said, it's a first for the chilis to make a song with only drum loop and maybe they didn't wanna over do it?
@@iamponer Totally! I see your point of view as well, and likewise, was not trying to diminish your opinions. And I think it was wise for Chad to not play over the top of the drum loops in this case, and it's a good example of him being "reserved." Maybe My Cigarette will hypnotize me the more I listen to it. :)
@@tempojesus5928 I'm just glad the peppers keeps on trying new things, even if that means not everything works for everybody. It's the way the peppers keeps evolving but still keeping their essence that makes me come back to them time and time again. And thanks for the video btw, great to hear your thoughts and see you enthusiasm for the new album.
Stupid RU-vid, not notifying me of when comment threads get updated, just new comments overall! Yeah totally! Everyone should consistently evolve musically and it's ridiculous to expect everyone to like how the evolution progresses. That being said, they still maintain a consistent sound throughout their evolution, and I'll enjoy listening to that no matter what. :) You're welcome! I appreciate it.
I personally liked the parts where John could bring in some of his Synth-ideas. I really like his solo stuff that he did under his alias "Trickfinger". The poetry in "In the Snow" reminded me of the end of "Melancholy Mechanics"
Yo I'm sorry I never reached out to this, I must've missed it! I love The Shape I'm Takin', it should've been on the album for sure! I won't make a cover of it this time around, but when I tackle the B-Sides, I certainly will :)
No. AK mentioned in an interview that he was struggling to make lyrics and keep up with the workload of the amount of material they composed in this time, but I don't think he reused anything they made in the I'm With You era. That being said, I hear the I'm With You era sound in a lot of these songs.
My cigarette may is the worst Song they did in a long time. But i really love la la la. Kind of crazy because in that song i dont mind the repetitive lyrics 😀
My first thoughts was exactly the same as you conclusion to this video, but i think i need some time to listen to this album more, it seems a bit overwhelming at the moment.. and the fact that this album is not on the streaming service that i use doesnt help the situation :) anyway great video man, keep it up
@@tempojesus5928 indeed a poem without words, i always find it interesting and amusing to Play it to People to See of they recognize the sample from butterfly and when they do their reactions can be so hilarious hahha i love it
12:24 Haven't tought about it, but yeah it sounds like the kind of Vocal Melodies Anthony would have come out in Im Beside You, kind of:D Great because I fucking love that style
Love your reviews man. BUT I don’t think you gotta try and figure out what songs they sound like, they’re all unique. It also plants that idea in your watchers mind next thing you know they can’t enjoy the song because it reminds them of song they’ve heard wether it be boring or over played, ya know? Just a food for thought
Totally! I appreciate the feedback. I always try to find what songs sound like because I have perfect pitch and always enjoy dissecting the similarities between songs of common keys/tempos. But I'll try to make other relevant commentary in the future. Thanks again!
