It's strange. I've seen everyone have the same exact reaction to so many of these songs on first listen. What's great is that, the more you listen to each one of those 'strange' songs, the more you find the magic and beauty in the sounds and intricacies of them. Like many rhcp music it only gets better the more you listen to them. Honestly that's the case for 90% of the songs on this album. I believe they require at least 3-4 listens before a person decides what they think. For me, this is one of my favourite albums of all time by the peppers. I loved it so much.
totally agree! my original list has already changed so much. this album started at a higher spot for me on the first listen compared to unlimited loves first listening.
I can’t express my gratitude to these guys for the amount of incredible music they blessed us with this year. A band that literally never has to release new material and can still sell out stadiums easily with their back catalogue. 4 guys who just love making music. Couldn’t be happier
seriously! I even loved the majority of Josh's material, especially I'm With You. I love that they take creative leaps explore new territories. I heard they wrote over 50 songs during the lockdown. If we get a third album, I may go insane.
I enjoyed watching your take. A lot of the songs you've marked as good were the ones that ended up growing on me the most (while liking very few songs during my first listen). Good video!
thats awesome! all of the songs have grown on me since my first listen. thats the biggest thing with the newer rhcp albums. They are not the typical sound you connect with rhcp. But i love that they have been taking these risks musically.
I TOTALLY agree with your comments on Fake as Fu@K outro. Not that it's a bad part. It grew on me after 3/4 listenings, but IMO if they keep the vibe it would be a perfect song
it’s funny for me the album covers match the tone of these last 2 albums…like Unlimited Love wears the RHCP symbol & sticks closer to their formula but it feels a little darker & more serious to me, just like its cover…while Return of the Dream Canteen feels lighter, sunnier, more colorful & quirky, like its cover…I’m much more drawn to the latter: I love when artists show diversity & showcase a bunch of different styles on albums, while it seems more hardcore fans would prefer artists to stick to the formula/sound that they originally fell in love with 🤷🏻
I absolutely agree. Unlimited Love felt more commercial and spectacle whereas Dream Canteen is more experimental and free flowing. I'm so glad both of them are so vastly different and they don't stick to their formula. It gives way for some amazing discoveries for them and their listeners. Dream Canteen is starting to become my favorite between the two.
Anthony's signing on the verse of Reach out doesn't convince me but the chorus is cool. From roulette to Shoot me a smile there are some nice moments but also some forgettable ones. As you said, somehow both albums (UL and ROTDC) lack of those beautiful ballads they used to make, but we have plenty of that on the previous albums. Definitely there's something of Josh here and there but John is another level.
He does have a tendency to get unorthodox with his lyrical pacing. Whatchu Thinkin took a couple of listens to really process the verses. I'm beginning to look at reach out as an ominous presence around the corner. Roulette and Afterlife have completely morphed for me. Roulette sounds like John's take on Aeroplane, and Afterlife is like if Warlocks came out during the Josh era. My favorite album is By The Way which is jam packed with those ballads. And very true, I'm very happy they are writing with different colors. There is definitely some Josh across this album and I'm glad they haven't completely disregarded these last 10 years in their musical approach.
@@lusciousluie I was trying to figure out if making only one album with the best music off these two would have been a better idea. I must say two albums were necessary, but maybe cutting few songs off (Not the one, One way traffic, Veronica, off UL; Shoot me a smile, My cigarette, Afterlife, off ROTDC)
@@antoniobarresi6576 there are definitely some tracks that I think should have been kept off of both records for sure. Those tracks that you mentioned stuck out to me as well, minus Afterlife. I believe it's best to trim the fat off of the albums so that they resonate more fully.
In The Snow had potential to be one of the most beautiful songs they've ever written but then... sloooow roOOooOdeeoOOO and spoken word by Anthony 😭 It hurts me so much that they literally wasted potential of this song by doing this... Anyway top5 for me: Eddie Carry Me Home Bag of Grins Fake as F@ck (I agree with your view on the outro) Tippa My Tongue But My Cigarette is actually pretty good too! I like the vibe on it. Anthony feels comfortable in this song, John just takes his synths and drum machine. It sounds incredible, like a brand new band. I really enjoyed listening to it for the first time. One of the "wow" moments on the record. Really like your reaction! Good job 💪🏻
Absolutely agree! lol it really has grown on me a lot though tbh. The spoken word reminds me of the ending of Death of a Martian. Thats a solid top 5! Love all of those. Mine is currently: Fake as Fu@k The Drummer Eddie Peace and Love Carry Me Home That's one of those that has grown on me the most. The effects going on in that one are very underrated. I appreciate the response!!
I completely agree I didn't give enough time to certain songs. The reaction was done super early in the morning and this was my first time editing a reaction so I didn't want to get the video blocked for copyright. shoot me a smile is great and one of the more pleasant songs in the album
Aw, too bad you didn't care for Afterlife and Shoot me a Smile, those are some of my faves! (alongside Eddie, Bella, Copperbelly, Bag o' Grins and Carry Me Home) Handful's a real grower too. Also check out the Shape I'm Takin! I think it's just as good as any song and perhaps should've replaced something like Roulette.
so definitely on the first listen through I wasn't too impressed with them. but their songs take multiple listens to fully grow on you. a lot of my opinions across the album have changed so drastically. I really love Afterlife. It reminds me of Warlocks. Shoot me a smile is also a great one. I kind of want to do a tier list of the tracks now that I've had some time to really digest them
That song has grown on me the most from when I first listened to it. I really like what he did across the album, but that song is a highlight for sure.
