A grove of 64 Plinia cauliflora hybrid, Red Jaboticaba trees, planted almost 6yrs ago. They were about 4-5yrs old at the time of planting, and some were much larger than others. Over the years there's been some good growing conditions, but most of the time it's too hot. You'll see a bunch of dead/diseased branches that needed to be removed, and a lot of nasty suckers at the base of the trees. Luckily I was able to get some nice ones to try to propagate, being that they do have some mature wood, over 3yrs of age, fast fruition is always possible. After weeding, pruning, and removing suckers, the last step is fertilizing. We used Holly tone, by Espoma, which is readily available at most HD or Lowes stores, and online.
Hopefully you learn something and have fun watching this somewhat lengthy video!

I read somewhere that jaboticabas grown as dense shrubs are less bothered by fruit-stealing critters than ones that are grown as open trees with all their lower branches removed. It seems if it's easier for you to spot and pick the fruit its also easier for critters to spot and eat the fruit.

Great video! Those aren’t suckers it’s actually the mother plant growing new plants from the roots only old jabuticaba will do that. In Brazil they make new plants from it because they’re as old as the mother plant. Mine does that too

You might have good luck interplanting NFTs (nitrogen fixing trees) that you can prune back in winter for mulch & let grow in the summer for shade. We're here n Hawai’i so have lots of options not sure what would be the right spp. for your zone. Taking a mixed/multistory agroforestry approach will improve your results & reduce the headaches 🤙🏽

Why not plant them under the dappled sun of long lived trees? Why instead use shade cloth that needs to be purchased and replaced many times over a lifetime?

I have a five foot tree that’s been in the ground for seven years. It’s in a place that has complete shade under a live oak. Do you think it would die if I dig it up and moved it? (As a slow grower it’s even more so with all the shade) I am in Florida, Dunnellon so kind of north central Florida. I reckon it’s too late to move it as the heat will be on soon. Maybe a shade cloth. I had a ten foot tree then that cold cold week in December 22 killed it almost to the ground. It’s come back strong and it about three foot. Are some varieties more cold tolerant than others?

Weird question: Would those suckers with roots hanging off actually continue to grow much like a Air Layer?
