Over a period of 3 years, a mighty large Mercedes Benz W109 300 SEL 6.3 went through numerous performance upgrade bit by bit under the careful hands of Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, with consultation from a Mercedes Benz engineer named Max Waxenberger. The vehicle changed from a 250 hp 6.6 Litre V8 sedan into a fire breathing monster producing 428 hp and 620 Nm of torque through the 6.8 litre heart. While the makers at AMG felt excited with their very first competitive sedan, the crowd and the press at the 1971 Belgian event of 24hours Spa-Francorchamps were not convinced. Against the sleeker looking BMWs, Fords and Alfa Romeos, the big, fat, large red colored AMG reminded the crowd of one fat Red Pig or die Rote Sau as they called it.
However under the hands of Clemens Schickentanz and Hans Heyer, this Red Pig went on to win a class victory and a 2nd overall podium finish, establishing AMG as a formidable force.
One of the most important AMG of all time, this 1971 Spa Francorchamps car is replicated in scale by many. My collection is blessed by the presence of the Schuco (1/87 scale), Hot Wheels Mattel (approx 1/64 scale), Minichamps (1/43 scale) and Minichamps 1/18 scale versions.
