I think that you could say that about a number of other songs of theirs: Power (Strength in Numbers), Napoleon Sheds His Skin, What Do You Got To Do... the list goes on.
Made the hair on my back stand up as I had this hitting 4 large Wi-Fi speakers kickin all at once in my man cave. Work hard play hard. Keep it real my fellow Americans. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸God bless America!
Somewhat little known fact about this line-up of Red Rider: the bass player, Jeff Jones, was the first bassist/lead singer in Rush for exactly one performance in the summer of 1968. Gotta admit this kind of blew my mind when I found out about it.
Still one of my favorite songs from the 80's. And simple minds..Don't you forget about me. Two epic songs to this day still hold strong. And from two great movies.
You do actually know what this song is about? It's about racism. Tom Cochrane wrote the song after noticing a new wave of Antisemitism in the late 70's. The "final solution" referred to in the song is what Hitler called his plan eliminate all the "undesirables" (initially, Jews, but later widen the scope to include homosexuals, gypsies, and the mentally and physically handicapped) from society. Wikipedia defines "lunatic fringe" as "a term used to characterize members of a political or social movement as extremists with eccentric or fanatical views.". WIth those thoughts in mind, you might want to rethink your "I'm one of the lunatic fringe" stance.
@@Kohntarkosz Nah that's what he means. But, I would have never figured out that's what this song is About. I thought it was about people's inner maniac.
@@donavonmacallister3101 According to Wikipedia, it is. They quote an article on Tom Cochrane in a Canadian newspaper from 2002. "Guitarist Tom Cochrane wrote the song after becoming concerned about a resurgence of anti-Semitism in the 1970s, and was also inspired after reading a book about Raoul Wallenberg, who rescued Jews from The Holocaust during World War II."
@@Kohntarkosz I believe you're 100% correct. There's an interview of him here on RU-vid where he talks about it. He doesn't define the antisemitism specifically.. just talks about "racism" in a general sense.. but it makes sense. FYI there's a Netflix series called Mindhunter about the FBI's behavioral reserach team (studies serial killers) that used this song very effectively.
He also wrote a song that wound up on the Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure Soundtrack, also recorded by him with Tom Cochrane & Red Rider in 1988. "Not So Far Away"
I was in high school 78 to 82 and absolutely did not appreciate the EXCELLENT music I was surrounded by...Always loved this song though… Just heard it on mind reader season two…
the other day I was getting ready to get on i75 south listening to 106.3 here in Macon and the female DJ played k lunatic fringe saying she likes to listen to the song while driving.
Funny story, I grew up in the 80's and had always had vague memories of this awesome song, being an audiophile....i had hearing parts of this song all the damn time, trying to remember the band and song title... Then one night in my mid-20's , I had the pleasure of spending the night with a girlfriend... Turns out she has work in the morn and set her alarm for the butt crack of dawn, 5:30am. The alarm/radio went off at said time and in my sleep I heard that classic synth intro and boom, it was lunatic fringe... I jumped out of bed to listen to the dj say the band name and song title. Fortunately, he did. I went out and bought that cassette later that afternoon. Finally had it and another plus was I was invited later on to visit with my friend/girlfriend. Do a VHS horror movie marathon and chill, lol.
the basser is Jeff Jones, the original Rush bass player before Geddy Joined. I had no idea. doing lots of Rush research and that of Ontario. This was a pop song in the '80s I had no clue the bass player was in the original Rush basser! Or that Geddy joined so long ago as 1968!
Wow, what a incredible performance to a great song and I am able to watch it free, we are truly blessed in America and especially in Boston Massachusetts to have all these incredible devices to watch videos like this and even those that are struggling financially Massachusetts gives them a device for no cost.
I wonder how many people know this song came as a result of the John Lennon assassination in Dec 1980. And yes, even more meaningful today.Thank you Tom for writing this.
Saw this performed in 1984 when Red Rider opened for RUSH. RUSH was recording their live Grace Under Pressure tour in Toronto. Mabe there are some Red Rider goodies from that show?
This band is soooo awesomely perfect live! They’re sooo unique but have the live talent like Pink Floyd live! I say they are just as great as Pink Floyd live!
