........ And old, vintage cabbage form plus quartered, organized petals packed in by the hundreds, plus strong scent is always a joy to me. Evokative of the Victorian era when life was less maddening and more beautiful (the ideal at least).
@@darren-harwood During the winter we dream, during spring, summer and fall we do. Springtime is my favorite time, a fesh new year, like a rivival of youth, a re awakening, a time of exuberance , hope and optimism before the frustrations of the growing season arise. An exuberance, hope and optimism happening every year going back into pre history. I think that if we do not get fixated on the here and now, but visualize our place in the continuum of time then we will be more at ease, and accepting of our self worth and value in working towards crearting a better, more beautiful world. Thy will be done on EARTH as it is in HEAVEN.
Hello, I loved the three varieties of roses you shared with us, including J Papa Meilland, which I too have in my rose garden. As a lover of red roses myself, I would suggest Rosa Eric Tabarly, a climbing plant with a rich and voluptuous flower and the Red Double Knockout Rosa which is intensely floribunda.
0:6 Very nice lineup. 2:28 very nicely quartered. 2:36 Yes, for here in Ohio, I drag my roses that are potted in their enormous pots into the cold 45 degrees Fahrenheit room for winter. Strong roses go in the ground, roses that have doubtful winter survival or are impossible to replace, spend the dismal winter indoors. It has seemed to me, that my roses planted in sphagnum/soiless potting mix have perhaps 80% of the vigor of my roses planted in the ground. I suspect that there is some as yet not understood elecrochemical stimulus to the plant from the minute sized mineral sands in the soil, so quite often, I dump a shovelful of my manure improved vegetable garden soil into a 5 gallon bucket, fill it with water, vigorously agitate with a board until soil is all dissolved, then I water my plants with that, and there is some improvement in vigor that way. Perhaps also some beneficial fungus interface in between the roots and the soil. 3:41 What happens here in Ohio is that when winter temperatures go to 10 derees or lower Fahrenheit, then the sun shines on the canes, they get sunscald and the entire cane dies to the ground. If sun does not shine on the canes at that low temperatures, there is no damage, so, 9 years out of ten, I drag the woven, black weed barrier from the vegetable garden and cover the roses with it before that happens. 6:37 My Francois Rabellais would look very nice in your lineup, Francois is blooming for me now, low level, but certainly present, clouds of perfume, but high temperatures make it quickly evaporate away. Francois is a nicely quartered rose, matures flat, as if it has some Gallica in it;s ancestry. I love my Francois, and you would also. 6:50, yes, nice to learn about characteristics from a gardener like yourself and not be dependent upon the salesman's oratory, thank you for sharing. Ralph in Ohio.
So lovely to hear from you, Ralph. Very interesting to learn how you garden and maintain your roses. A lot of work, but that makes you appreciate the blooms even more so. Hope life is treating you marvellously well and your garden brings continued joy for you. Blessings from Harwood Garden to you you and yours x
@@darren-harwood Thank you Darren for your kind words. Like wise I hope that life is good to you. I listen to independent media/call in radio for 20+ years and callers always state their name and where they are from , so , for me it seems good to do likewise on notifications, especially with gardening since our location has a strong influence on our garden performance.
Danke!!
Darren could you please give us a hint as to where you found your Jubilee Papa Meilland?, as I'd like to make sure I'm getting the correct one, and some places sell different roses under false names. I have the original Papa Meilland in my garden, so it would be nice to be able to home the more modern version too. You'r flowers are stunning as always, thank you for sharing!
