As a diehard Yankees fan, I can think of only one word to describe that tribute: hilarious! That video they showed of the 2004 ALCS and opening day 2005 was hysterical. I was chuckling the whole time. The gifts and the tributes were classy. The Red Sox definitely showed that they are rivals worth respecting.

Last MLB player to ever wear 42 since he was drafted a couple years before every team retired that number in honor of Jackie Robinson. I'm a Red Sox fan and this was a very great move by the organization to honor one of the best closers of all time. Mariano Rivera may have pained us at times and almost did it in the 04 pennant but he definitely deserved this honor. A great tribute to an MLB player who worked his butt off for 19 years.

Playing against the Yankees, you really only had 7-8 innings to win the game. It was always "We gotta score 1-2 runs before they get to Rivera!" So many times when he entered in the 8th or 9th, it was such a feeling of hopelessness..a "why even bother" mentality. He was truly lights out.

@edwardaviles7828
@edwardaviles7828 8 лет назад
Liam Flynn After reading what you said I almost agreed with the thought that he might not get elected to the HOF. And yes, for whatever reason DH's are frowned upon. However, I looked at his numbers and he has a lifetime BA of just over 280. By the time he retires he will have close to or over 2,500 hits. Most importantly however, he will have over 500 home runs. That alone should get him inducted. Not to mention the playoff performances and clutch hitting. DH or not, if those numbers are not good enough then the HOF is worthless.
@alannah6058
@alannah6058 8 лет назад
+Edward Aviles yes I totally agree . there are some position players that stink on the field but they get into the HOF anyway because of their bats, and hopefully by the time the 2016 season is over Papi should have at least 530 home runs which is more than I can say for some players . Also what about pitchers, they don't hit but plenty of them are in cooper's town!!!

"Here comes my cutter, boys. I'm going to throw it on my first pitch to you, and on the second. I will throw that pitch alone until you make an out. Good luck trying to hit it." This was his silent message to hitters for two freaking decades, and the hitters never figured out a way to hit it. We might never see another baseball player who was so dominating. Think about it this way... if he had an equally dominant offensive counterpart it would be someone who hits a homerun on almost every at bat. Man. I miss this guy. I hope the Yankees make him a coach, or ambassador, or something so that he remains a Yankee forever. Thanks for the memories, Mo.

As a Yankee fan from the days os Mel Stotlemeyer, Horace Clark, Tom Tresh, etc., I tip my hat to the class os the Boston Red Sox. Both of our cities have a passionate love for our team but at the end, its respect for the competition that binds us. I’ll probably get crucified for what I will say next but if the Yankees aren’t in contention, I will root for the Sox simply because they are a class organization

It's all in fun, Mo gets it. As a Yankee fan I don't mind it either. Sports is all about fun and the Red Sox ribbing us for that epic collapse in 2004 is completely warranted. We earned it fair and square. And Red Sox earned their championship. Ever fellow Yankee fan I've talked to thought this ceremony for Mo was really classy.

I am a diehard Yankee fan and I am not too crazy about the Red Sox but they earned it in 2004. There was nothing wrong with talking about 2004. The Red Sox are a class organization and I tip my hat to them and their fans for showing such great class and respect in honoring Mariano Rivera. This is a great rivalry and I think the fans from both teams should try and emulate the class that the Yankees showed in the 2005 Opening Day ring ceremony and the class the Red Sox showed to Mariano.

I was there, love the roast part just because of the history of the franchises. Mariano Rivera is the best closer of all time and the only Yankee except maybe Jeter that I would ever give that reception to. He earned it.
