Great video! For me, this video would be even more informative if it showed specifically what kinds of artifacts to look for when comparing various REDCODE compression levels. The comparisons in the video were against other formats, but what about within REDCODE ranges? If I don't know what I'm looking for I might miss it and use 14:1 when I should be using 5:1. Is it only blur (which would be nice), or is it possible to get more objectionable artifacts if too much compression is used for certain content (like high detail or fast motion)? Can I only look at still frames or do I need to check frame-to-frame consistently and for motion artifacts? Thanks!
I agree. I can't find the post I did years ago, but once you start getting higher detail scenes, such as the woods, even 10:1 starts to break things down pretty quickly. The brown on the trees starts to get muddy, and macroblocking dancing. Here's a zoomed in crop still, with 5k 7:1 on the left, and 5k 10:1 on the right. It looks even worse in motion, due to the dancing macroblocking. www.dropbox.com/s/gqc0fst5ou4e7fz/side%20by%20side.jpg?dl=0
Something I just realized: For those of us with 1080p screens, to get the proper equivalent of fullhd/blu ray like quality you just need to watch content in 'youtube 4K'. The video bitrate works out to be roughly the same.
I was shooting 1080 on a dslr until I brought the Komodo home last week. I'm planning on Netflix/Amazon Prime type of content. With tvs in 4KUHD now, is there a way to calculate which Redcode to go with?
Thanks for the video. Been looking for stuff like this since. Pls I have most important questions for you, how can someone shoot on red dragon or scarlet and the red R3D file will not be duplicated to like 3 to 5 files with same size/footage like 4gb. This making it difficult for me sometime in post pro Bcos the files now becomes heavy and instead of the Client to use 8terra hard drive, they now using 16terra of Lacie Hard drive but still yet the drives re crying. Am using HP Zbook 17inch 4gb graphic ddr5 with 24 memories. Editing is smooth in Raw and even playback but my issues is the Lacie hard drive 3.0 type 8terra always crying and vibrate but the Lacie drive C type is cool. Thnkx
Question: Would 11:1 8K WS on Helium S35 be good enough for a big screen if there is no crazy camera movements or fast motion? There are details in the walls and underexposed/low contrast scenes, but overall it is well exposed and lit. Just finished shooting a short with these settings and I am still waiting on seeing it through the post. Thank you.
Anyone have any recs for shooting talking heads with REDCODE? Have traditionally swapped over to ProRes to record interviews to save card space but would love to use REDCODE for flexibility in post. Ratio recommendations would be great!
I hope it comes true and they win so after that every camera can literally use Redraw or a simular raw codec . It is really funny that Arri has to render their video in pictures if you shoot Raw because reds CEO is a crybaby.
I think you just happened to have a bad graphics card. Because it goes out of sync with nice resolution in a browser. Try to copy paste the youtube link to a VLC player. Click file >> Network-stream and paste there the link to the video. With a software interpreted by the OS not by the browser in the OS. It will be one step faster and and run in a proper speed and resolution.
