Stick by your guns -- Peek a Boo is _red._ I say this as a Reveluv from the moment they debuted AND a choir nerd. Red vs. Velvet is NOT determined by the theme of the music video or the story of the lyrics. It is determined by the style of the melody. Red Velvet _frequently_ pairs bright, poppy arrangements against dark, mature, sometimes b-movie horror themes. They're very good at that. Peek a Boo is one example, Russian Roulette is another, Really Bad Boy (RBB) is a third. To be pure velvet, a song has to be sophisticated and downtempo. It's half of their concept, but a minority of their title tracks. "Be Natural", "Automatic", and Bad Boy" are velvet. "One of These Days" is an exception, its _neither,_ a pure ballad. If you can imagine Janet Jackson singing it, it's velvet or possibly blended, like "Psycho". There are more velvet songs among their b-sides, but other than "Kingdom Come", I'm not thinking of any names at the moment.

Although music is subjective, the Red and the Velvet are defined by the Cake girls themselves. As you’ve seen, after Yeri did the introduction of Peek-A-Boo, Joy said they are starting the Velvet songs. Nonetheless, Red concept is defined as songs with edm, funk, hip-hop and often fast with quirky concepts (e.g red flavor, dumb dumb, queendom, huff and puff, lucky girl, bing bing, pose). While Velvet concept is defined as songs with RnB, hip-hop (e.g chill kill, peek-a-boo, feel my rhythm, bad boy, mosquito, so good) and most of the time but not necessarily, ballad and slow, oftentimes with a darker, mature concept as well (e.g psycho, automatic, be natural, la rouge, little little, hands locked eyes locked, one of these nights). If you’ll go into the entire discography of Red Velvet you’ll find that most of their songs actually lean towards Velvet side and I strongly believe that the entire Chill Kill album is a Velvet, hence the reason why I love it so much. Once you’ve gotten into their discography your ears will know if this song is a Red or a Velvet 😊

Yeah Velvet started from Peekaboo in the KV video. Honestly people are debating a lot about this where to put this song. It has Red sound in it but it's also toned down a lot just like their Velvet side. People need to rmmber that "Velvet" isn't just solely RnB, but any song of them that has more mature, calmer, darker & also often more sultry vibe. Peekaboo, Bad Boy, Psycho, Time to Love, Feel My Rhythm & Chill Kill are examples of "cheerful" & upbeat Velvet songs.

@@maytabangin5349 Jess has better ease albeit airy with her head voice, has better control of her forward placement, and definitely doesn't rely much on nasal resonance. That, and none of her fans/OT9ers back in the day called her as good as Taeyeon or called them an all-main-vocalists group, unlike reveluvs these days. /shrugs/

Peek a boo has a mixture of both sides, but it mainly has a darker/creepy vibe to it. So I do get why it’s the velvet side.

Peek a boo is about 50/50 imo, which makes it perfect for the transition. I usually put it in the velvet side though.

It's just her opinion. Joy has my favourite tone in RV followed by Wendy, but her saying that she doesn't enjoy Joy's voice doesn't make it slander.
