I'm a cobbler and resoling both boots is practically identical since they both have slip soles sewn to the uppers. Unless the slip sole is destroyed they can both be resoled in the same manner.
Yeaaah I've been looking at all these thinking "Huh, my cobbler seems to think even moulded and glued sole boots can be resoled. Those fools!" 🤣 I mean sure, sometimes the welt helps. In fact, just the other day my cobbler said "Hmm, I might have to add a welt to these boots if it looks like it." It's as if the silly bugger doesn't realize welts are gifted to boots from the deities on high.
Hey bud I have a question I have epoxy on a pair of boots I use still can a cobbler get the epoxy off and restore the leather or do yall mainly focus on the sole?
If you're having problems with blisters when breaking in a boot or shoe, one trick we were taught in Army Basic Training for our first long-distance marches was to wear a pair of nylons under our socks. That way the nylon and sock slide back and forth across each other rather than the sock and your foot, which results in the separation of skin layers/blisters. Plus, since it's just a nylon your feet won't overheat like might happen if you are wearing sock liners like hikers often wear.
Also and this one won't be as comfortable but get the boots really wet and wear them all day. They will shrink to your foot, end of the day dry them by the fire and wash your feet good. Works every time
Danner is the perfect blend of a modern and classic look. So many moc boots look the same but danners is the look that sticks out the most. Absolutely gorgeous mocs
Wore the same pair of Danners my entire time in the Marines and I haven’t even considered wearing another boot. I’ve put them through hell and every step I’ve taken in them felt like I was walking on angels tits.
@@Jw-uz8xi I wore the hot RATs. I think they are called the Mojave rats now. It’s the one with the dark brown toe and heel cap. Even though the ones I have are meant for hot weather I wore them in cold weather as well but I just doubled up on the socks. Never had the soles freeze and lose traction. The fact that they are re-craftable makes the price more than worth it.
@@Jw-uz8xi the only thing they aren’t good for is if you’re a Marine and you have to run your CFT in them because they are heavier than those sneaker style ones made by under armour.
@@chambo9212 I've got a pair also. The Danner RAT was specifically designed for The Marine Corp. Marines wanted a top quality boot with little to no break in. They are the most comfortable combat boot I've ever worn. I also have 3 pairs of Acadias. The Acadias took about a month before they molded to my foot and felt like sneakers. I love Danners. I have 8 pairs and each pair is absolutely perfect. So many ppl out there won't spend the money on top quality boots. I learned years ago that a great pair of boots makes all the difference in the world. Love my RAT boots. Glad you do too!!
Red wing 877 is the ironworker boot because the leather lasts and the sole is soft enough to grip but not overly soft to wear down too quickly, plus they are easy to resole.
I picked up the Bull Run boots in November 2019, there was a short break-in period but it came mostly in the form of feet cramps, I had zero blisters and within a week they were perfect.
The bull run has been my primary work boot for 8 years now. I can wear them for 16 hours a day with no complaints. Union made in Portland Or. Living in Washington Portland’s not to far away and you can pick a pair of factory seconds for $111 out the door!
@ROBERT DELAHANTY Well there's an income tax so the state is really trying to discourage working. You can however put up a tent anywhere you want and get food stamps
I have owned both the Red Wing Mocs 8890, and Danner Bull Run (along with Thorogoods), but I will comment on the RW and Danners. First, this a really well done assessment of both boots. I've had my 8890s's for 10 years, 3 resoles, and the stitching started failing and water got into the boot very easily... I had to retire them. I replaced them with the Bull Runs, and immediately, they felt better on my foot and the leather was softer, more cushion. The arch support was a plus along with the shank. I prefer the "look" of the 8890s, but I'm just as happy with the Bull Run's after months of wear. Overall, the 8890s are a "better boot" but honestly, I got my Bull Run's for $160 and they're more comfortable and feel just as sturdy. Plus, I'm starting to like the patina they're developing and I don't miss my 8890s. With the price difference, comfort, and shank/arch support, the Bull Run's are a better buy and win (in my opinion). However, I keep looking at sales for another pair of RW's, so I guess a part of me feel some loyalty to RW (I've own many pairs of them over the years). However, the Bull Runs win the moc toe contest.
@@markusalsbjer2779 well, for one. Redwing soles rub down much quiker than thorogoods. Thorogoods are known to be much more comfortable out of the box and they are tripple stitched compared to the single stitch they use on redwings most of the time. I believe redwings don't even come with insoles whereas thorogood makes really high quality and comfortable insoles.
Danner makes a prized boot by the USMC. Different companies make boots for the USMC that Marines can buy. The Danner brand is the most expensive one offered and prized, comfortable from day 1. Danner also uses Vibram sole, which also makes it great, and not squishy.
Yeah Thorogood makes a fine boot for all the reasons you mentioned, it's just not as good looking as Red Wing's Depends what you want. Definitely if you want something for a work site, Thorogood is better.
You got some key points. The biggest difference from me is the leather quality. I have done plenty of work on different brands and red wing always has the superior leather due to their American leathers from SB foot tannery. But other brands have better out of the box comfort.
I own both. Danner is more fragile. The box stitching along the moc toe upper failed on me. The bull run is incredibly comfortable until the soles wear down (which happens quickly). The red wings hurt to break in but are amongst my most comfortable all day boots.
I own a pair of thorogoods and a guy I work with bought a pair of red wings the same time i got my thorogoods. His soles are over half way gone and mine still have tread on them.
I just picked up a pair of the bull runs for 85 Canadian. Brand new.. so despite the thinner leather and resole potential that’s why they win in my book.
Technically the danner leather is thinner but not by so much its noticable, and even at that its still much thicker leather than most other moc toe boots out there. To me red wings name and reputation sells. Unfortunately they have changed over the years and the quality isnt any higher than most of the top boot company's today.
Great review. Your redwings are close to resole time. I’d like to suggest sending them to “Brian The Bootmaker” at Role Club and have him put a role club leather half soul on them and tell us how it goes.
Matt Skembo The re-sole will be worth more than the original cost of the shoe. This isn’t to knock Brian’s work, but more so a highlight of lower end boots going to local cobblers ($70-$100 re-sole) versus better known, higher quality re-sole jobs (Brian’s pricing).
Danners for 20! Years. HUGE fan. Bought my first pair of redwings. (Not this style). I like them both. Probably go back to danner with my money next time
Great video comparison! I have had my eyes on the danner for a while. I am so glad you brought up it's construction bc it's something I missed but not a deal breaker. Thanks Nick!
Ive bought my first danner 18 months ago. Never buy another brand again. My Redwings last 6 months tops on a construction site compared to the year and a half for the danners
I wore both boots many years. I ever been to the red wing factory but I have been to the small shop fanned has in Portland. They make some great boots. I like the danners because they are more comfortable and seem to be much better for the money. Danner used to be all made in America but but have been sold over the years and now have some models made in China and else were. The made in America top of the line danners are 300-400$ last I checked. Great boot. Last for ever. Absolute beast of a boot if you ask me. My neighbor works at the factory and he says they have very high inspection standards. They will pull them off the line for very small imperfections.
I bought my son his first pair of Danner’s in Portland for his birthday and they look great. Then we found out they were factory seconds which we didn’t even notice. I still have my last pair of Danner’s and they will look great years later. Made in the US is important for me. W like to support my fellow Americans.
You know Vishal they asked me if I wanted one but I keep procrastinating because I have to measure my foot three different ways and mail a tracing of my foot to them, it's all so much haha
Danger boots every time. The men I worked with who wore Red Wing’s had to resole them long before I had to resole my Danners. The double layered construction on my Danners held up much better than those same Red Wings. Easier to clean and polished, much more comfortable and much safer in hazardous environments. This is my opinion from 20+ years with the same two pair of Danner boots I purchased at the beginning of my career. Danners every time.
Watch Rose Anvils video on the Danner bull run. Those boots are made really cheap. I also had a friend at work buy some and they fell apart really fast.
Love my danners. I think aesthetically they have a smoother look compared to redwings. The RW have a bit clown shoe presentation for some reason with the Mocs whereas the danners look sporty. I do love my iron rangers but owning multiple pairs of danners for various applications, they’re my go to
I didn’t know that. I just purchased Danners and they are being delivered Wednesday but reading soles wear fast but my Thorogoods have great sole durability
Red Wing is the better casual boot: It is more fashion focused, it is more long lasting, it is more expensive, etc. The Danner is more of an actual work boot: It has a steel toe option, meaning that it is actually allowed on job sites, unlike the Red Wing. Does Red Wing not know how many sales they are missing out on because they do not offer this nor the Iron Ranger with a steel toe? Half of the construction workers in this country would be wearing either the Red Wing Classic Moc or the Red Wing Iron Ranger if they had a steel toe option. But because they do not, I would hazard to guess that almost none of them are, because you would not be allowed on a construction site.
If you want some good Red Wing work boot you need to check out their Irish Setter line. They very comfortable, look great and unlike their heritage line they are actually for work. The only down side is that they are not made in the USA like their Heritage line. They are made in Vietnam... well at least it ain't China. I also own a pair of Thorogood and also love.
I have a foot dropping after nerve injury - and discovered that boot weight does make a difference for me ( much loved RedWing Blacksmith are way too heavy for daily use ) - can you weigh both boots for comparison ? also for same reason I dream of olive suede Capitans :)) thanks for your videos - you have amazing personality and great passion which i share !
You don't really need a shank in a shoe unless it has a heel. If you have a heel, you need that extra stability for keeping the arch from sagging and taking a toll on your arch support.
I always choose Red Wing....... Especially since I have an inside connection, that gets me my Red Wings and Irish Setters, for half price. They really do make great boots!!!
The Carolina version is my personal favorite. Wider in the toe and narrower in the heel and ankle than the thorogoods, slightly nicer leather, and I prefer their insoles.
So with Danner, you can basically get a new one for not much more than it would take to get it resoled? Why would anyone bother to get them resoled then?
Yeah, seriously. I think a regular cobbler could do it for a lot less, but it'd be harder to find one who can because it's stitchdown. Definitely the Danner has less of a durability guarantee.
I have had so many redwing boots and my favorite it's the first one I bought. I have resole it three times already and they have so much style now that I dont use them for work anymore. They are like wine if you treat them properly they get better and better.
Stridewise I’ve had a few pairs of Danner’s. My first pair are on its 4th re-sole. They are very easy to resole. I watched the cobbler do it. It’s pretty much peel the old one off. Stick the new one on, and trim. Charged me like $65?
Danner is one of the few boots featured on this many other boot review pages that actually comes in my size (15). It’s frustrating how many stop at 13 or 14.
I own both of these boots and agree with your take on them. My Danners were $70 or so cheaper than my Red Wings and I think it shows. The Danners just don't feel as serious of a boot as my Red Wings do. It's a subtle thing, and just my opinion, but the Danners tend towards the casual boot side of things, whereas the Red Wings tend towards the work boot side. The Red Wings just feel like a higher quality product to me.
Haha 'serious' is a great word for it, Alistair! Danners are fine and the fact that they're lighter and more sneakery is a big part of the appeal for a lot of people. They're just a bit less booty.
@@Stridewise yes, well put. I'm glad I have the Danners, as I think they are more appropriate for certain (more casual) situations, and it's also just interesting to compare the two. Bottom line though, my Red Wings just seem to get better with age in a way that the Danners do not. The quality of the leather, and the construction method that RW uses seems to add up to a boot that ends up being like an old friend. I don't get that from the Danners, they just don't have the guts that the Red Wings do. Maybe that's just me though.
Never understood the hard time people have breaking in leather boots. I rarely have issues, maybe a hot spot, but almost never develop blisters. Are these that bad for some of you?
I think the red wing is a better boot. But I with they would update their sole compound. Compared to thorogood and danner it is not long wearing enough. Otherwise it seems to the be superior boot.
Redwing all the way. I just bought my first pair about 6 weeks ago. While they took about 20 miles of walking and a couple of applications of mink oil to really soften up they are supportive in a way I have never felt before in any boot or shoe. They are now nice and soft and feel like a supportive pair of slippers. Most comfortable yet supportive footwear I’ve ever owned and yes the most expensive.
To me the Red Wing wins from the get go because its stitching is brown as the leather itself. That white stitching on the Danner hurts my eyes :P In any case great comparison!
I feel like I should have bought a new pair haha it's actually white, but it's still less garish because there's only one row of stitching visible on new Red Wings images.evo.com/imgp/700/118371/602580/red-wing-8890-6-inch-classic-moc-boots-charcoal-rough-tough-leather.jpg
I just picked up a pair. They're quite nice, soft leather, not as much of a break period. A touch narrow for me though. I'm a 9D on a brannock device and I went with a regular 9. A little tight around the ball of my foot but the 9.5 was too long and was a bit sloppy. I replaced the footed with a Superfeet orthodic (I have quite flat feet).
I work in the HVAC trade. I am pro Oregon in my purchases. I love wedge soles, great on wet surfaces. Yes it rains in the PNW. As far as resole a boot, by the time a resole is needed, the boot is broken down.
I feel like Danner should only source their leather from American tanneries if they are going to have the flag on the boot. It seems disingenuous to have it there with the knowledge that the materials might be from another country. Just up the cost a little bit, so you can wear that flag with pride.
Maybe I heard it wrong but I thought he said they source it from more than one place...that doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t all sourced from here in the U.S.
They’re 190. Not to say that’s cheep by any stretch and I really don’t care where they’re made as long as the quality’s there. But, if the leather is outsourced from somewhere other than the USA they shouldn’t put a flag on’em. That’s what l was agreeing with.
If you want to break in "work boots" just go work in them & it will happen naturally. If you have an office or cubical job where they won't beak in natural then you don't need work boots.
Hello. One question, not about nazis or rightwing politics, but about boots, in this part of the world, eastern europe, boots are seen as a fall/winter shoes, very very few scattered tourist wears them, but nobody else, its a common thing among people in australia,nz, canada, us or other countries like mexico a common thing or lets say something not unusual to see among people there? Everytime I see a western movies or a movie set in the hot arid places in australia, Us or mexico i see people wearing them quite casually especially cowboy boots. Thank you.
@@Stridewise yea I have to jump in here because Danner is a combat boot company now. The top 25 percent of their highest priced boots are all just different levels of luxury materials slapped on top of the Marine boot. That may not be a bad thing, My USMC GTX pair lasted through 2 Iraq deployments and training, almost 4years! #dannerman 😉 love the video though @Stridewise! Currently undecided between new thorogood and RWs.
@@Stridewise true.. title is there, but I feel they resemble a more traction tread. Specs and aspects are almost eye to eye. Electrical hazard soles waterproof etc
Would you ever consider reviewing brands that don't have a lot of distribution in the US? I can imagine that C&J boots would be hugely interesting even to Amercian viewers. Perhaps US vs. English video?
Hi, I just bought a pair of Wolverines, they have a new style not new but.. But anyway there called the Journeyman, take a look at these. i like them ,they in come WIDE.
