As a bootmaker who worked for Timberland for seven years in R&D. Brilliant video! Not easy to compare two completely different boots and bring them to the same level ground. The Timberland has a rubber sole, it has a direct-attached PVC or TPR (depending on the model) midsole. PVC = Poly Vinyl Chloride, TPR = Thermo Plastic Rubber. Some models now have PU (Polyurethane) midsoles. These are not cemented, the material is melted then shot into a mould with the lasted upper already on top. As the melted material cools it forms to the shape of the mold and attaches to the bottom of the lasted upper. The shank is pre-attached to the bottom of the insole. if you see Rose Anvil's video where he cuts open a pair of Timberland boots ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ENIYPuhsV6U.html you will see that the model Rose Anvil uses has a different sole. That sole is 100% cemented sole and does not have a midsole. The boot model used in this video is the direct-injected version. A direct-injected boot, where the midsole is fused to the upper provides far superior protection against water than a cemented boot. A cemented boot is more prone to sole separation than a direct-attached boot. To get an idea how the midsole is direct-attached please see this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FcpOwQwJ0l4.html

Well, I happen to have the classic 6-inch Timberland boots in leather, heritage style. So they have aged nicely over the 15+ years I've worn them, and I used an wax and oil to maintain. Also I've just had mine resoled by one of the few cobblers that do it here in the UK. They grind down the sole, then stitch and cement in a leather midsole. Then stick/cement on a Vibram lug sole, which can then replaced when needed - so far so good!

I own several pair of Timb's I bought about 18 years ago. I've been very happy with them. Since my feet have grown a bit, and my arch is starting to bother me, I'm largely retiring them. Construction, landscaping, mechanical, snow, sightseeing, etc. I'm about to leapfrog Red Wing completely and buy a pair of Frank's. Red Wing's cult-like following has always amused & interested me. No doubt they are quality. Quality materials, handmade USA, cork midsoles, but are they really better than a pair of Timb's functionally? Or is it more status. I feel like most of the Red Wing fans commenting in this thread are largely white collar middle class.

Great video! I used to buy Tims back in the 80s for work because they were cheap compared to actual work boots and it left me more money to party. It was sorta like the Brahmas of Walmart today. I installed in ground pools back then and they didn’t hold up well but I was to cheap to buy real boots plus I did think they were cool. I broke down and bought Diehard Boots in a similar style from Sears back then and they held up 3 times as long so I stuck with them.

And, like the Brahmas of today, they cooked your feet. I spent 3 Vermont winters homeless and working with just Goretex lined Dannville and/or Belleville combat boots. Rarely slipped, no frostbite, and they didn't cook my feet in summer. Still wearing the Danvilles, and i scored those used to begin with. When not broke, however...RedWing all the way! I live in NYC, and I have both, I have to admit Timbs are WAY warmer in the wintertime. Also, A lot of people here saying that Redwings are a "working boot, and a real working man boot" Umm, no, mostly hipsters here in NYC go crazy and orgasm all over Redwings and Wolverines, while my father, an elevator mechanic (and many ppl who do manual labor jobs) wears Timbs daily. I do believe they are the better WORK boot, as they are shock absorbant, there is no break-in period, and they can easily be worn during wintertime/outside work, and it's worth their price. HOWEVER, Redwings are the boot to be worn around the city, to go on dates, and just a very good casual boot. Beautiful and way more attractive for sure, but I would not say it's a "real work man's boot." Either way, awesome review of both!

Hey Nick, hope that all is well with you. As usual, you’ve produced another stellar review/comparison of the Red Wing Vs. Timberland. It looks like there are a couple of important pros and cons between the two boots. The first being the cost, with the Red Wing almost double the cost of Timberland. Next is longevity, with the Red Wing utilizing a Goodyear Welt certainly gives it the edge in this category. After that, I’d think that it might come down to style. I’m an older guy, and this is contrary to your findings/suggestions, etc. as I kind of prefer the look of the Timberland. The bulbous toe of the Red Wing is a bit of a turn off for me. I’d prefer my Allen Edmond’s Higgins Mill, which as you know, is somewhat similar stylistically to the Red Wing. I’m curious as to whether you’d prefer your Red Wing or AE’s Higgins Mill? Thanks for taking the time to create this very informative video Nick. Keep up the great work my friend! ...Ed

Are you speaking of brands or the 2 boots being compared in the video? IR's are not work boots. Quality is an interesting word in-and-of itself. Red Wing is handmade in USA, using better leathers, and a more conforming mid-sole. Certainly more expensive to make, and certainly better materials. But does the Timb stand up to just as much AND is waterproof? Yes, so if quality is how they stand up and function for work, then no, the IR isn't better.
@zizzilock
@zizzilock 2 года назад
I’m amazed that people call these boots, “work boots”? In the uk, you wouldn’t be allowed on site in either boots as you require steel toe caps. Do people in the US really work on site in timbs? However, If I had to choose a pair, I’d go for the timberlands because shock absorption is really important if your on your feet all day and want to save your knees, ankles and joints.

The Tims are real winter boots and the soles are grippy enough for Proper mountain hiking. My first pair are still intact after more than 2000 miles, no resole and no conditioning. Insane. The sole possibly lasted because most use was on snow. BUT the lining leather is worn through and they look ugly. Tims are amazing in terms of value, especially if you buy them on sales. I'm not sure if it's possible for my iron rangers to last twice as long but I hope they will remain beautiful a lot longer. :)

I definitely wear a three old, beat to hell pair of full grain Timb premiums whenever it rains or gets below 30 because my work Red Wings aren't insulated and the steel toe gets cold. They're also much more light!

I dont own Redwings yet, but I do own premium waterproof tims and i like them a lot. I like that they have sturdy sidewalls and have great traction in snow. u can lace them up tight or wear them untied and they hold their shape well. I prefer to Iace them up tight and tuck my jeans over them. It is nice though when ur going to run a quick errand and u can slip them on in 5 seconds and wear them loose. They are heavy, but I would classify it as sturdy, bcs the weight is no problem to me. If you live on the 12th floor with no elevator, it might be a problem 🤷‍♀️ . The nubuck color does get dirty fast, but they are boots and I don't really care about that.

This review is like comparing some IKEA kitchen knife to a samurai sword. Timberlands are expensive but cheaply made fashion icons. After a year or two of constant use they will fall apart. A pair of Red Wings costs twice as much but will last at least 10 years if you take care of them and have the sole repaired (which you can't with Timberlands). Check out the YT videos of this guy Rose Anvil who cuts shoes in half (he did both brands) and you will find out why.

As a contractor that on my feet ALL day in ALL sorts of dirt, grime, snow, mud....its funny how people wear these boots as some masculine statement rather than a functional boot. When looking at reviews, I look at what will be the most comfortable, weather resistant and arch/ankle supportive rather than fashion. There is nothing worse that sore feet due to poor arch support while working 10hours a day.

Hi Nick! Love the channel man. I was wondering if you could do a sock review or your favorite socks to wear with boots. Im having trouble finding a sock that fits really well. I wear thin bamboo socks with my work shoes and i bought some thicker wool socks for my thursdays but they feel way to tight. Thanks for any input.

Good idea! Personally I wear either chup socks or Red Wing's socks, Helm has some lighter socks for slimmer fitting shoes. That's all I got!

Good video, but I didn't quite get out of it what I wanted. I guess I was seeking more with regards to missiles & arches. (Or lack of) Which are going to feel better at the end of the day if you were walking around sightseeing all day for example.

I had four pairs sent them back because of sole splitting from upper on all of them .They were made in the Dominican Republic ,I had great trouble getting a refund from the Timberland shop and they tried to persuade me to accept an item of clothing rather than the money refund.The whole process took six months to get a cash refund ! I now have Caterpillar Colorado's which don't split due to Goodyear welt,of course the Red wing is a superior boot !

I love Timbs for sure, own three pairs now. But not too sure about the waterproof claim. Wore a pair of classic yellow on my 10-day trip to Tokyo and Kyoto in 2017 during late typhoon season/early fall, and my timbs leaked water from the upper (never got them fully submerged, only got rained on or stepped in puddles). At first it got damp, and after a few days it came to a point where my socks were constantly wet/damp. To be fair, it's a 4-year pair so perhaps the leather leaked here and there? Still love them though.

I've had a pair of Timberlands, though in a different color, for a while and I just got a pair of Iron Rangers. I love the looks of the Iron Ranger so much more and I already didn't wear my Timberlands hardly at all. The Iron Ranger cost a lot more but I think they are worth it. My only complaint would be about the soles on the Iron Ranger. On one of the first times I wore them I busted my ass on some ice that was on the porch of the cabin I was staying at. It might be because they were brand new and not scuffed up yet but I feel the grip on the Timberland is better. I will not normally be in icy conditions so not a big deal. Great review and comparison.

I have both and I love Timb’s styles, collabs, and aesthetics... I’m also a hip-hop guy. All that being said you’re stupid if you don’t think Red Wings are better. They are simply better made, sturdier, and they fit much better. It’s like comparing a family sedan to a muscle car.

Two completely different shoes. The RW are just normal stylish leather boots. Timberlands are winter boots. You would not wear simple leather shoes in sub zero temperatures.

Hahaha You get it. I own both boots and I agree with you. The thing with the IR is that is a boot that looks good. It has that 1940's nostalgia to it, but if you somehow could make the timberland look like an IR no one would choose the original IR ranger. It's a way more practical shoe with the down side of not being very interesting looking.

I honestly can't speak to Iron Rangers and I really want to get a pair before I say anything good or bad but I do hear good things about the Iron Ranger including your review. Timbs however I know very well wearing them on the streets of New York (I swear I've seen you out filming once or twice in fact) and they are as you said good for the cold and real wet weather and tough as nails, we beat the heck out of um and for a lower price why not they really are a win, but if the Iron Rangers are similar enough to the Thursday Captain then maybe I have to give them a better nod, quite the toss up. Either way thanks for the awesome comparison review as always Nick!

Two different types. For serious dirty work, on hard floors ,concrete, steel stair cases. The iron ranger. For snow, muddy trails,crossing creeks, Utah cold temperatures, you want Timerlands. You live in a ski town ,the mountain west,water proof insulation works.

I really love timbs, sadly I cannot wear them as many would recommend (untied) due to my feet structure, it would be very damaging so I have to tie them up completely. I've heard about Redwing and how good it is, sadly they're not sold in my country which means that I have yet to try them to provide an opinion.

Instead of the Timberland, how about other brands like Panama Jack (which is from Spain). They have some awesome waterproof boots, which seem to feature that desirable goodyear welt. One I have my eye on is the Glasgow Igloo model, a winter boot with lamb wool inside. At least in the EU it's cheaper than the Tims

One thing you didn’t mention, but one could see in the video and in my opinion is very annoying: Timberland sole is like a magnet for stones. Stones keep sticking inside, and once you then walk on a hard straight surface, it starts making weird noises. Or you can scratch wooden floor at the house entrance. Still like them very much, and is one of the most comfortable boot. I wear them throughout the year at least once a week to bring my daughter to the horse range. Looking forward to the cleaning video!
