Yes Redbone was Native American, & the Dance is called the "Fancy Dance", Pan-Indian dancing, Fancy Feather or Fancy War Dance is a style of dance some believe was originally created by members of the Ponca tribe in the 1920s and 1930s, in an attempt to preserve their culture and religion. It is loosely based on the War dance. Please react to more, they have many hits out there!!!
Thank you! So many people don't realize it's an actual Native dance. I was born and raised in Tulsa. My children have Muscogee and Choctaw blood from their mother. (and Indian medicine works!)
The name of the two brothers was Vasquez I think they were Hispanic I'm claiming them as Hispanic... I heard this song in around 92-93 when I was in high school I thought they were black until recently l realized that they were hispanic/indian
Midnight Special, back in the 70s, was the show to watch for music fans. A good mix of up and coming groups and well established acts. Plus it was like the concerts back then, no segregation. You'd have country, rock, RnB, folk; the best of the best! 💋
Oh, yeah - I remember staying up "late" to watch the Midnight Special - not really allowed in my strict household, but when I spent the night with my BFF we could do it - and then also watch "creature features" -- :)
@@GinMae Hey GinMae! Yea, it was always more fun when you had a good friend to share those times with. Some of my best memories was sitting around with a friend or two, listening to the 45s we'd bought that week at the record store. And reading the rock magazines, etc. Good times!
Wow, I miss The Midnight Special so much. When I was a kid, we got to experience shows like this every Friday night at (wait for it) midnight on The Midnight Special! Everybody that was anybody in the music business was a guest on this show at one time or another.
Yes it’s a traditional dance,,, he is wearing a traditional regalia,,, very spiritual and needs to be respected. I absolutely love REDBONE I grew up listening to it and made sure my daughters heard them as well. I am so proud of these men they even toured in Europe to spread awareness of not only Our culture and traditions but also sing about the injustices Our people went through and still going through today. Jimi Hendrix has called Lolly Vegas the lead singer his favourite guitarist.
The lead singer/guitar player and the bass player are brothers Pat and Lolly Vegas who are of Yaqui-Mexican American and Shoshone.Hence the name Redbone which means mixed within tribes. My uncle through marriage is a proud Yaqui and proud of this band.
Singer & guitarist [in black] are brothers, so it' s kinda a family band. Check out Keith Secola & His Wild Band Of Indians doing 'NDN CAR' song which is another great Native band, considered to be the Indian National Anthem [beloved & known by many].
Midnight Special, Don Kirschners Rock Concert... so many weekend nights as a youngster watching them with my mom. The 70s were the best time to grow up! Redbone was great!
Proud Oglala Lakota girl here, still love jamming to this groove🎶. Lolly (singer) was the most beautiful warrior ever created. 😍 Thank you for your beautiful commentary on Natives. 🙏🌻
This was a huge hit in 1974. I was 14. And they played this on the radio all the time. Everyone loved this tune❤. I didn't know it was them that did this song either
Super talented really handsome fellows ! Lots of great music from them ! This song was used in guardians of the galaxy ! Along with many great 70s songs !
I only found out they were Native American a few months ago. Turns out, that beyond this song and band, the members even after the band stopped, continued to influence the music industry. Everything from instrument instructors to music label producers.
Mad Matt the band is still going strong but only original member is Pat Vegas a founding member of the group REDBONE,,, his son plays and sings in the group as well.
I have always loved and still love it .i drove my mother around when that song came on i would stay in car tell it was over. Michigan can get cold weather but i would still stay tell over
The song is about this...Lolly Vegas (the singer) tells his girlfriend that she's perfect the way she is. "What's the matter with your hair?" He asks, before explaining that there's wrong with her mind, her sign, or anything else. It's a affirmative and empowering song where he encourages her to take what she deserves: to come and get her love.Btw Lolli Vegas passed away in 2010 and the other guitarist Tony Bellamy (the guy with the native American outfit) also passed away in 2009 rip
Even as a little girl and even tho I’m Mexican, it felt good to see a band that looked like me groovin on stage. This song was played at every family cookout we had growing up
I love to finally get to see who's singing I knew a lotta songs when I was younger but we didn't have videos so, for a long time i didn't know what musicians looked like🙏😇
An ABSOLUTELY AMAZING singer, who is HALF Indian (Cherokee), I'm quite certain you will love. She is "Cher" & her incredibly VERY UNIQUE voice, will have you hooked. "Half Breed", is the song she sings of her heritage, but has soooooo many countless hits. Her voice is truely one of a kind!!! Her stage performance & endless costumes, are captivating!
@@user-fb5ro6kj9v I know that; I wasn't sure when I posted that, but I found out later. One thing is for sure though, SHE'S STILL AWESOME!!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Buffy Sainte-Marie is a Native American singer. Her biggest hit is probably The Circle Game. She also won an Oscar for Best Song for writing Up Where We Belong, from the movie An Officer and a Gentleman.
Thanx so much for this as a Native American I really appreciate this. Men's Fancy Dance is what was displayed here. Eastern Eagle is a traditional drum group you might wanna check out. They are from my community in Nova Scotia.
I love Redbone. I remember this prefomance. I begged my parents to let me stay up late to watch this Midnight Special. I had a huge crush on Lolly Vegas, the lead singer in white. 💖
I'm almost 59 years old and I've been aware of this song since it came out. I must confess that I had no idea that they were Native American. If I ever knew, I certainly didn't remember. Great song!
Since before rock ‘n’ roll was even born, Native Americans have always made massive contributions to music. Blues, folk, rock, disco, and country have all been impacted by Native American influence. Today we celebrate these artists and bands that have gifted us with amazing music. Here is a list of some musicians and bands with members of Native American decent to listen to today: Blackfoot (featured above) Redbone Buffy Sainte-Marie Chan Romero Debora Iyall (of Romeo Void) Jesse Ed Davis Jimmy Carl Black John Phillips (of The Mamas & The Papas, half-Cherokee) Link Wray Mark Farner (of Grand Funk Railroad, one-eight Cherokee) Rita Coolidge Robbie Robertson (of The Band, half-Mohawk) Winterhawk
This is an american really rock band, great band and this a example whit all some humans, equality humans and i love his, saludos desde México brother :)
I have heard this song before did not know who sang it , even at my age you are always learning new stuff , they are great hope you will do more reactions of their music so we can all know their music better 🤗.
If you want to explore the mark native Americans made in the music world you need to watch the documentary “Rumble - The Indians who rocked the world”. Fantastic documentary.
Love them and the song 💜🎶 This song has rang in my ears all my life. I never knew their heritage bc I only heard them on the radio and there was no internet. 😊 I didn't care for that recording, I hv heard much better. Not sure if the internet is getting glitchy with it (haha) or just that channel had that selection. Anyway, thanks, loved it.
There's an amazing documentary called "Rumble: The Indians who Rocked the World", featuring Redbone and many other Native American rockers, some of who are very famous but many people just didn't know they're NA/part NA, such as Jimi Hendrix. Also shows the strong influence of NA music on blues and then rock. I can't recommend it enough, it's great, has a lot of iconic rockers interviewed in it.
I do remember that performance on the midnight special ! I also heard that song many times in the early 70's on CKLW radio from Windsor Ontario that covered an area as far away as New York!
Oh yeah redbone is awesome for some reason I thought you reacted to them already but anywho they are awesome um um 😇🙏as you may can tell they are native American yeah as others stated it's the fancy war dance
They had several popular songs and moderate success in the mid-seventies. Forty years passed ... And "Guardians of the Galaxy" happened. Millions of people "discovered" this song. I don't know for sure, but I hope that they made a huge pile of money from it - they were under-rated back in the day.
There are many Native American influences in the early Rock. Performers that most people are unaware or first nation people. And Native Americans across many different tribes have many traditional dances. Dances for all occasions.
Holy ***, I never knew this band existed. Love your channel. Its crazy how some bands can be really good and somehow they just are all forgotten very quickly. Love the way the video started with the dancing and chanting. These guys are awesome
Jay, I have a suggestion for you. When you get the opportunity, check out the grand entrance to the Gathering of Nations. You can pick the year as it is an annual event. You will see traditional dance from over 300 different tribes. Here is a little history for you. When a tribe moved to follow the buffalo, they would send out scouts. When the scouts found a good place, they would do what is known as a " stomp" dance. They would stomp the grass flat to make it easier for the rest of the tribe to set up the camp. What you saw in the video is what is called a " fancy dance " version of a stomp dance. There are many videos on RU-vid showcasing native American dance. I am a proud member of the Chickasaw Nation.
My family descends from the Native American ppl, so w/that being said, I wanted so badly to recommend that EXACT song/video to you, but didn't really know how to do that directly; I just keep my head above water, on technology. Anyway, SO GLAD it was recommended to u, for I knew you'd enjoy it.
@@24ohhenry Noooooo, Jay's a great guy! He replies to a number of my stuff, w/a heart. He probably just has so much on his plate, w/being pulled in every direction, so it's impossible to reply to everything & everyone.
@@lisac9930 I am almost finished listening to all of his entire video library not a peep from him until I disagreed with him. I am putting in WORK as he would say
Just seeing this makes me wonder: how many band changes? Are they still going? How many have passed on? How many are alive? And of them, how many are living on a reservation?
WHERE ARE ALL OF THE REQUESTS LIKE : SAM AND DAVE-- HOLD ON I'M COMING , WILSON PICKETT -- LAND OF A THOUSAND DANCES OUTSIDERS-- TIME WON'T LET ME HOLLIES-- LONG COOL WOMAN IN A BLACK DRESS ?????
I liked this song a lot but didn't know that they were native Americans until I saw this very program. Still love the song. They were red to the bone, hence rebone.
