This video shows Redcar in it's heyday. Shot by Gordon Richards in 1959 taken from the DVD of ITV Tyne Tees series 2 of 'The Way We Were' . Available from www.northern-heritage.co.uk
I really enjoyed watching this film, it is special & reminds us of how popular Redcar was with the local community & visitors from further afield. As a community we should work together to build that pride & interest again. Redcar still attracts a lot of people when the weather is good but we don't have enough interesting amenities in the right place. For example near the boating lake where the skating rink used to be & swimming pool. Our parks are run down & don't offer enough variety for young people. This film should be shown in our schools as it will inspire youth & all age groups to unite & take an interest in our history & future. Anne
Thanks to whomesoever posted this video it brings back memories. Gordon Richards and the Recar Cine Club were also an inspiration to my late friend Trevor Hodginson who went on to make a career in film making at Elstree.
This is definitely 1960s. The children's marching bands was a big thing but much more so in County Durham. Redcar WAS a Seaside Town and travelling down the beach towards Marske you could find dozens of fossils or what we called "Devils Toenails". No Council Buses so everything was the Red United Automobile Services.
I love this film. I grew up in neighbouring Marske and went to school in Redcar. Most of this is before my time but I remember the boating lake and the old swimming baths where we went on a double decker bus from the girls grammar school for swimming lessons). Would be great if anyone has similar film record from Marske...
Can see why most of Redcar's older generation always look unhappy walking round town after this, because to be fair, i would be too if i knew the popular seaside town that actually looked unreal was in fact now...a shithole.
Oh my holy fuck, Redcar now is only good enough for a WW2 film bomb site!!! The place is a Royal fucking mess! I used to love it as kid, but will probably never visit the shit hole it's become. It was clearly a wonderful place in the 50s 60s.
