@@Alinear285 I mean, with the new regulations I'm sure slipstreaming will be more prominent than ever. If overtaking becomes far too easy with DRS, I think that would ascertain whether DRS should be scrapped or not.
When it shows two drivers doing battle, you're missing the huge brand exposition. We fanz don't really need that, but I bet teams like that exposition. Also, something that is missing in both original and yours is tyre compound. I'm always trying to figure out what compound each driver is using, specially if they're close. Sometimes it shows, I know, but I think it should be something that stays with the overall graphics.
I wanted to write the same thing... My points to improve: - The green indication of a short distance between two drivers in a battle should be at less than a second (DRS range). - When two drivers in a battle are highlighted with their faces, the team logos should also be shown. And in addition to the telemetry visuals, there should be an extension on the right with the information of the tyre compound, how old the tyres are (number of laps) and how often the driver was in the pits. But overall really well done!
@@Badner83 I think your second point is good, and i agree with it. But i think that should showed up only when something happened. Like battle, or whatever FIA wanted to.
Before the video, I was like "what's there to redesign, the current tower seems perfect?" Now, the official graphics feel woefully inadequate to me. Great job!
Nice work Matt, though I would say for a future video, maybe you should design the TV Graphics in the way you would if F1 told you to make them, as in you had full control over what graphics looked like and what they did.
Nice, a definite improvement. I personally would love to see a monospace version of the font when it's just the three letter abbreviations of the driver names, it would look a lot neater.
Great job. Just a couple of thoughts... That coloured hook going back under the driver position, I like the concept but leads my eye back to the left when obviously want to continue reading information left to right. Also when it gets scaled down I feel like the number and team colour is now too cramped on the left handside while too much space to right right before the +GAP. Including throttle and brake telemetry is a great idea
7:50 for the telemetry graphic, maybe you could swap the throttle and brake around, as the throttle pedal is on the right and the brake pedal on the left, but this is still brilliant 👍🏼
For me one of the information I'm always after is the type and age of the tyre of each driver. It's makes a massive difference while watching the race as its hard to keep track of all changes. I wish you could accommodate that in the graphics
watching on a phone made me realise why the team colours are where they are in the current graphic, on a smaller screen it’s easier to identify the colours against a dark background rather than on the updated graphics where they are closer to the position number maybe a hold over from SD broadcast or the rubbish bitrate on F1TV and NowTV during broadcasts always really fascinating to see what can be changed and how it would impact the viewing experience
i think the mail problem of current graphics is the team colors. ferrari & alpha romeo, red bull & toro rosso (and in this "new" version renault & aston martin). if you don't have good hd tv all this pairs look pretty same. (the second f1 tv problem is the colours of some cars themselves - white, white and white - which i hate a lot)
The white-on-grey seems like it's a bit too low contrast to be readable at a glance. The battle graphic also loses both the team icon and the interval itself, the latter of which is the key information. There's definitely some good changes, but on balance I prefer the existing graphics.
A thing I really like if you watch the MotoGP races is that instead of the little bar of colour, they have the number-logo on the left, really usefull in the races to keep them appart :)
Hey Matt u used AE for this right? If you did, could you do a tutorial on how you animated the graphics? Loved the graphics, much better than what we have now.
Such a nice tweak! Normally I quite dislike the changes and after time I will get used to them. But the changes you did are really good and brilliant. More modern while still staying "classic". nice job!
Constructive criticism: In the tower the telemetry for the pedals should be gas on the right and brake on the left because the way it is now seems counterintuitive. And no I'm not racist against left handed people.
Really like this one! F1 should get you to do the graphics. the new 2020 added graphics with the added"stats" isn't really want people want I've seen allot of negative comments already and F1 just announced them few days ago. What I really want is exactly what you made here. Really like the Added Speed, brake and Throttle input. I really like they way they used the Halo to display when using the unboard camara, but when 2 drivers battle is what I really want
I would like characterised race numbers by the driver names. Motogp has that and it helps remember their number for seeing the car and recognising whose it is.
This looks really nice man! I'm pretty sure I I've never seen a breaking graphic that had progression in F1 (or in any series to be honest), all you get is a big on/off red block if the driver is touching the pedal. I agree with you, fewer but more relevant information is way better than we have now.
I love this video, came from tommo f1 recommendation and subscribed. It would be cool if the graphic showing telemetry came on based on where the camera is focusing on. Perhaps something to show purple sector drivers, tyres the drivers on and pitstops - that could be whittled down to maybe which drivers need to do another pitstop to complete the race.
If you've ever seen last year's Porsche Supercup coverage with similar (albeit far less detailed) graphics, you'll see that they manage to fit up to 22 lines on the screen. I think there's usually something like 38 cars in the whole field, and the rest of them just aren't shown. I like very much what you've done though!
My biggest problem with the driver battles focus is that you lose the interval. Surely thet's the most important bit? I mean, granted, they're usually 'on camera' when it comes into play, but not always. Plus it's not always obvious, say, with a long focus lens as they're driving toward the camera down a straight, when one is closing in on the other. Maybe it could stick out on a translucent background further into the picture? I don't think that would detract too much...
Interesting that people are really into this and looking at design options. Never gave it much thought, bc I'm only interested in the data. (lap/total laps/driver and position). Simple white text in a black box and you never heard me complaining. 😛😁👍
Nice. Don't care much for the team colors, i mean if you don't know that for example Stroll is driving for AMR you sure as hell don't know that their team color is green. Really like the gap time turning green but i would just light it up as soon as they are in DRS range. 1 thing i would absolutely want implemented and i never seen or heard anyone ask about this, is the current tirecompound they're driving on and maybe what they've changed too / wich stint they are on. Maybe have like some small color indicators below or infront of their names, like a small red circle if they're currently running the softs or 1 yellow 1 white to indicate started on mediums and now driving on hards... if that makes sense. It would be a great indicator on who is on the fastest tire at wich stage of the game. I know they show it in personal graphics from time to time but i would just like to see it constantly.
About the last graphic: If Hamilton and Verstappen were to spin in the opening lap, being dead last. You know for sure that they will get up into the point again. Their fights on track would be very relevant, even though they would be for bottom positions at first. The last graph would actually be too tall, and you would not be able to fade away the drivers at the bottom screen, because they are the ones the graphics apply to.
The only thing I would have changed: Make the current lap number (“38” and “12” in this screen shot) in bold so it stands out more from the number of laps for race distance (“52” and “54” here).
I think something you missed in this last part is the delay that they got also in the Halo graphics. They need to fit they graphics with the aktion you see otherwise this would be absolutly annoying.
just found your channel. great job your graphics redesign, but still room for some improvements. here my suggestions: - I think corporate identity is not so important to be used in graphics, here it must be functional, not visually in line with other publications. the typo used should be changed to something narrower which saves space and enables to show more data without compromising too much the size of the screen showing the action. - the car color bar should have about double width otherwise it is barely visible, and the rounded bottom is bothering more than improving. by the way, I also work with design and did not even notice that the rounded edges vary, this detail is not important and can be disregarded. - if you talk about reducing the spacing everywhere why did you keep such a large space between the drivers name and the bar with the gaps? the gap is anyway related to the drivers name, thus the closer the better. - in the battle graphics the gap between the drivers should be included all the time. this is much more important than the braking and acceleration graphics. then the drivers face and team logo can be maintained which seems to be important for f1 advertising matters. - the braking and acceleration graphic does not need to be included in the tower because it only needs to be shown when a battle is happening, therefore it could be added to the bottom of the screen showing the graphics of both cars side by side. here when an overtaking takes place, the position of the two graphics should switch sides. - the tire compound symbol should be shown all the rime, either in white digits at right of tower bar or included in it at the right of the gap. there are also some things that bother me during qualifying, it is annoying when the tower shows: - the actual lap time instead of the gap, the lap time is totally uninteresting to me, what counts is the gap between positions. the lap time could be shown in white digits during a couple of seconds at the right of the bar. - "in pit" or "out lap" instead of showing the gap, this could be shown additionally at the right of the tower bar in white letters. - "driver at risk" and the lap time of the driver at risk instead of showing the gap.
Sensational ideas and your work, congratulations! I'm doing a project for car racing, and I really like this model used in Formula 1. By any chance, wouldn't you have it vectorized or in PSD to use it as a base?
You should put in the current gear the driver is in to the right of the speed and go the left of brake/throttle indicator and underneath the drs indicator
Really nice overall, would be so nice if they implemented your ideas. The spacesaving with the names and stripes turned out much better looking, than the original. I had one thought, that if you want to signal overtaking possibility, it would be better to highlight the two drivers involved. For example ( I know you just ditched a blurred line, but still ) the space within the two battling drivers could change color with a gradient.
I would like the driver name abbreviations in the team colours. You could then get rid of the vertical line for the team colours. Would like to see tyres used/in use in the graphic somehow. Definitely highlight closer battles, and anyone on a charge. I like your overtake graphic change, big improvement. Also closer battles graphic info (speed, accelerate/break).
Would be nice to have tyre info. Circle with tyre colour, and inside part of it a pie chart that diminishes with tyre wear. So you know what tyre they're on and how old.
Your changes make it more difficult to distinguish at lower resolutions (particularly reducing the gap between the position & the team number. There was an article years ago by DixonBaxi, who designed the 2004-2009 graphics set, and they said they had to take into account small B&W TVs, as lots of viewers in developing countries such as Brazil were still watching on those.
I like it, but i still think the team colours should be bigger/thicker. Now they kind of look like the "F1 inside Tracks" graphics from F1TV - which is great too.
Why not switching the green / red throttle / brake graphic? It would make it more consistent with real life. Throttle under the right foot, brake under the left!
Is the brake and throttle indicator really something people are looking at? I think the sector times / lap times on another screen, provide more insight, then a indicator, that only compares 2 drivers in a short moment in the race. At least, I don't know people who are activly using those indicators, so I'd take them also out.
It’s great! Just an idea: could the tyre compound color be on the left side of the numbers? It wouldn’t take up much space yet it would he very informative i think.
One thing I have always thought is why don't they put driver numbers on it. I know all the f1 drivers because I watch it all the time but when it comes to other motorsports I can easily see what their numbers are but not what driver it is. I think that would help for new fans to know whose. Screen
Forgive me Matt, I like the old spacious one more than yours. To me yours is too dense and makes me confused. Anyway great effort and as usual, great video!
Can you look at the end-of-race graphics? Annoys the hell out of me that, since a few years ago, there’s no indication when a driver has taken the chequered flag. A while ago they added this for the top three only, but other than that you’re relying on the commentator looking out the window and telling you what’s happening, or just seeing it by chance in the background. The TV direction is typically woeful at this point (showing the winning driver on their in lap instead of action). Moto GP have a great solution for this. I’ve always found it strange as it’s clearly a design choice for the race, because they have it in qualifying.
I think that negative space between positon-team color-driver helped better with colors. Now it looks a bit squished for me. Great job mate, that’s only my comment.
I also think that telemetry on the tower is a great novelty idea but again I would lose my eye tracking between the action and the telemetry and it would be kinda late for me to see who brakes late etc. A lower third is better in my opinion. Also the telemetry data must be clearly seen from a distance and resolution and I think that it is kind of a downgrade from what we have now (we don’t actually have a great battle comparison but I really like the halo telemetry).
So I wouldn’t really implement any changes to the current tower since it works really well and I wouldn’t fix something that is not broken. But great effort, I love the content. Keep up man, I hope I would have skills as great as yours
Great job! I finally discovered i'm not the only one who is obsessed with TV scoreboards and graphics. Is there any app you use to redesign such graphics? If yes which is it?
