Epic! Best Metal band ever!

I'm not the biggest Iron Maiden fan, but I've always respected them for their influence on all the bands that came after them. So many bands from the 80's on wanted to BE them. For more Iron Maiden songs, I'm partial to 'Hallowed Be Thy Name', 'Fear Of The Dark', 'Wasted Years', and 'The Trooper'.

THE greatest metal song ever.

Bruce is a qualified airline pilot, he flies the band on their own 747, he's a best selling author, a successful solo career, an Olympic standard fencer who made the British Olympic team but couldn't attend due to touring schedules, owns hus own aerospace company and has beaten throat cancer - have I forgotten anything?

Rush is like Iron Maiden. Great musicians, crowds, thoughtful lyrics,...you csn listen too each band and catch something new each time.

My 2 Favorite Bands, RUSH and Iron Maiden.

The band that started my metal journey back in '88 and I was able to witness in '92. Bruce is the GOAT

Iron maiden is right up your alley for all the reasons you mentioned.

Bruce was a commercial airline pilot. He had a full time job outside of Maiden for many years. Then he combined the two and flew the band around the world in a custom made 747. He even flew the fans to gigs on several tours. In 2006 he flew to Oslo, picked up a Boeng full of Maiden fans, flew to Stockholm, did the show and flew them back the next day. I attended the same type of trip to Italy from England once. He called it Bruce Air. Great memories. He is also still an active fencer on a very high level. Still competes. He was on englands olympic squad in 1988. In addition he is a writer, radio host, screen writer, an entrepenour, the list goes on. I wish I had just a few percent of his energy and creativity.

Thanks so much for doing that! 💕 I'm glad you enjoyed, I thought you'd love the storytelling. I've read many comments from people who used this song for school! Iron Maiden are often a history lesson. They have loads of songs about real life events or people or literary stuff. Nope they're not all that long, although in later years they've had more like that. Their early albums usually had one track being a big one like this. Bruce Dickinson was a commercial airline pilot at one time and flew the band around on a tour himself! He was also a very good fencer in his younger years and I believe almost made the British Olympic team in the early eighties. Another story telling one you would really like is Hallowed Be Thy Name (do the 1982 Hammersmith version if you do it as Bruce's singing is amazing in it) and there's another song, Dance of Death (en vivo version) where his live performance of it is just superb, he pretty much acts out the song! And if you want to see crowd involvement then anything from the Rock in Rio 2001 is incredible. Fear of The Dark and Sign of the Cross in particular. Oh yes and the t-shirts, yep! That's Eddie the band mascot. lol

I don’t know about NASA or a symphony but Bruce in addition to being one of the best metal singers and stage performers is or was a licensed air line pilot. In fact on this particular tour he piloted Iron Maiden’s 747 from city to city for this world tour.

I've been a fan of Iron Maiden since 1990... Sorry, but I'll try to keep it concise... They are a UK band formed in London, England in 1975 and rose to fame in the 80's as one of the 'New Wave of British Heavy metal' bands... Their music consists of time changes, dual (now multiple) lead guitar harmonies... Their lyrics range from dark fantasy... movies... literature... history... and social commentary. The band name was taken from the movie - "The man in the iron mask". Their 'scary' album covers and t-shirts feature their mascot 'Eddie the Head'... a ghoulish, skeletal figure w/ hollow eyes who appears in various forms - created by artist Derek Riggs and adopted by Iron Maiden for their debut album 'Iron Maiden' in 1980 til today. Iron Maiden was founded by Steve Harris (bass) in 1975 when he began writing original songs and wanted his own band to play them in the pubs of London... They went through numerous musicians - Dave Murray (guitar) joined Iron Maiden permanently in 1977 when they were still unsigned... his friend Adrian Smith (guitar) joined in 1980 after the debut album (which was recorded w/ Dennis Stratton on guitar) In 1982, Bruce Dickinson (vocals) replaced vocalist Paul Di'Anno (who was their singer from 1977 until 1981 and recorded their first 2 albums - 'Iron Maiden' and 'Killers') ... I remember reading this in school and had a huge head start compared to others in the class because I knew every lyric of Maiden's version which is basically just paraphrasing the original. Easy test lol

Maiden is one of the best, if not thee best metal bands ever. You seemed really into it but you were kinda bummed it was so long. I'm confused if you liked it or not. I was blessed to witness this epic song played live in 1984 at just 13 years old....Iron Maiden and Rush have been the two biggest parts of the soundtrack of my life having had the opportunity to see both of them live about a half dozen times. Luckily Maiden is still touring as they are finising off one tour only to begin their 50th anniversary tour having been founded in 1975.

Re the poem, one of my most treasured Christmas gifts is a book of 3 Samuel Taylor Coleridge poems, The Rhyme, Xanadu (inspired Rush's song) and Christabel. My mother bought it as she knew I loved those 2 songs

Iron Maiden recently announced new World Tour called Run for Your Lives World Tour next year, 2025 celebrating Iron Maiden's 50th Anniversary starting in May. This tour will mainly focused Maiden's 1st 9 albums of their career.

I was around 17 or 18 when this came out and I was very aware that this was based on the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the band made sure we all knew. This is just a typical subject from Iron Maiden. The Trooper is based on Tennysons “Charge of the Light Brigade” and many songs are based on books or movies. Definitely worth checking out more of their work

most of us knew this was a poem, we were already well into literature because of previous maiden albums , it was our teachers and non -metal head class mates that were floored that a metal band was making songs based off literature and poems. also the bass player wrote this song ,he is the main song writer and founder of the band. many people will toot bruce's horn while forgetting that Steve harris is the driving force in the band , he started the band , because long ago the band he was in didn't want him writing because they said bassist don't write ... so steve said screw that and started iron maiden . he's been the main writer on most of their biggest hits. but every one in this band are so active and into many other things. so many people forget this is not the "bruce show" it's iron maiden and they are all very skilled and intelligent musicians.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem is definitely still taught, and one of my colleagues supplements it with this song (he's one of many who do)!

When I was a kid, I was with my brother and his friend in his basement, and he was into Maiden at the time. I'd never heard of them, but I saw the Killers album cover, and it scared the bejeezus out of me. I was probably 9 at the time. A great album, by the way, with Paul Di'Anno singing.

I had English Lit before I ever heard Iron Maiden and their use of poems, history, books, movies and other inspirations in their songs plus the amazing musicianship and singing drew me in and I never left. I have seen them live in the 80's, 90's, 2000's, 10's and last summer. So 5 decades of seeing them in concert. I took my daughters and last summer my oldest daughter took me. The Trooper song is based on the 'Charge of the Light Brigade'; Children of the Damned based on the book/movie. The Prisoner based on the TV show. And on, and on and on. Who knew metal also teaches history, literature and modern culture. Its not just noise. :)

Guilty as charged. These cool and badass lads brought this 12 year old Dutch metal /punk/rockabilly fan (who wanted to be cool and badass but mainly loved their incredibly storytelling and music) to old English lliterature (including mr. Coleridge :) Even ended up studying history (no money in that (warn your children and albatrosses) :), the naughty buggers ! Saw them quite recently at a concert (and surrounded by 15 years old lads and lasses again (train overflowing with young people) :) Their energy is unsurpassed. Maiden will never die.

I'm glad you reacted to Iron Maiden. I hope you don't mind some criticism. You cut off the very end abruptly. Bruce Dickinson was a world-class fencer and piloted the Iron Maiden jet around the world. They did not write this song. The band was started by Steve Harris. He writes most of the songs.

I grew up a Maiden fan starting in the earlier 80's and I used to have my literature and history teachers listen to some Maiden songs. I remember first time my mom saw that I had an Iron Maiden album she freaked being the conservative Christians that we were/are. So I had to actually sit her down we watched Live after Death on VHS and I gave her the lyrics to a few of the songs and after that she didn't mind me listening to them after that. however I had a lot of Maiden posters all over my walls and of course the shirts etc.

Regarding the poem,all Maiden-fans checked it out immediately, didn't wait until school! 🤘

There is a lot more depth to Iron Maiden , than just being the vessel for Metal to travel among thy varied shores ! 😁 Get into the lyrics and you shall see . Look up "Revelations" for example , a slower song but Very Good lyrics . They have been arround a very long time and still going strong , the main song writer is Steve Harris their Bass Player . Bruce Dickinson is a licenced commercial pilot , flying their own touring plane between concerts . They are the real deal original pioneers of metal . 👍

Flights for NASA? The legend of Bruce Dickinson grows. 200 years from now... Bruce Dickinson was the first man on the Moon, after he removed the sword for the rock and became king of England. Bruce flew for several years the airliners (Boeing 747, Airbus, etc) that took Iron Maiden around the world. He also piloted for I think a nord Airlines...

Maidens been my favorite band since 1982. If you like the theatrics you would love Dance of Death En Vivo. Hollowed Be Thy Name 1982 the offical video is live and filmed 2 months b4 the album came out. Peice of Mind is my all time favorite album. The Trooper, Aces High. My favorite 2 songs are Revelations and Still Life. There's like 20 top 10 songs from them. Need more I can give you 15 right off the top of my head.

Iron Maiden is to metal what Rush is to, well, everything else. As an avowed Rush lover I love Maiden also. They're a metal band with very intellegent lyrics (at leat with Bruce Dickenson).

If you like theatrics and storytelling you should check out Dance Of Death by them live at En Vivo I believe the location was called. Banger storytelling and theatre in my opinion.

Steve Harris is easily the move overlooked bassist out there... he drives this band forward and made their music what it is.... Never fear iron maiden, they are more like theatrical metal :) Great music with a great show but nothing scary... BTW.. if you like the show you really should watch some live Alice Cooper videos.. he's the one that pretty much started the big theatrical rock shows at this level...
