I love the shot when Mark is holding the psychologist at the edge of the building. Remember in Shawshank Redemption when Andy Dufresne is held at the end of the building by the officer after he mentions "do you trust your wife?" and the shot goes overhead to show the danger of falling? I love how Wiseau shoots that shot upward towards the sky where you feel no danger and see no threat of the fall. Everything is backwards in The Room.

Jay himself told a story about how he completely lost interest in Samurai Cop after learning about all the unanswered questions. I recently watched a 20th Anniversary showing of The Room with Greg doing a bit of live commentary. He says it makes so much more sense if you imagine Denny is a cat. And he's right.

I think the most fascinating thing about this movie is contemplating the perception of reality it would have taken to write produce and direct it.

A sequel needs to happen where Johnny is up in heaven. He's doing great, everyone loves him, and he's even met a new future wife up there. The only problem is that she's having an affair with Johnny's best friend, God himself. Let's see how it all plays out!

This must be a great movie to react to because you never have to worry that you'll talk over something important

I don't buy that the Room was originally intended as a black comedy/joke film, as Tommy Wiseau's initial reaction when it became a Manos and the Hands of Fate-like cult film was incredibly hostile and litigious. He threatened to sue Nostalgia Critic as well as others, and had tons of youtube videos on the Room DMCA'd. You don't react like that when you were intending to say "got you!" all along... In fact, Tommy was one of the first shitheads to file false DMCA claims against youtubers en-masse. He did it before Digital Homicide and Day One Garry's Incident, before it was even a thing people knew about. Real trailblazer...

There is a local art theatre that screens The Room every week and has for years. They constantly send out emails pining for donations because they are having trouble making ends meet. They were insulted when I sent a dollar and suggested screening anything but The Room. Maybe one day they will put two and two together.

This movie and the Disaster Artist book are like the two perfect companion pieces for understanding one weird eccentric guy

A lot of the room actually looks and sounds competently made. Tommy spent six million and did have a crew with some experience. I believe they had to hire a second DP or maybe it was an entire crew because the original quit. I'm not sure the crew can really be blamed for the most amateurish stuff when Wisseau was directing.

I’ve always been glad they did this commentary. The Room is too well known for Best of the Worst, but it’s still great to hear them talk about it

I think the two strangers who show up to mess around in the house was actually suppose to be Lisa and Mark but something happened and maybe it was the actor playing Mark didn't want to come in to shoot the scene. Instead of rewrites or dropping the scene Tommy used two random actors instead.

ok so a long time ago when new grounds was the big thing (so around 2003-2005) i remember seeing a game of the room and i played it not knowing wtf the room was and my god i was lost lmao. i was laughing at how bad it was cuz they used sound clips from the movie lol. after that i looked up that fuckin movie and watched it. the game was like an rpg game. you played through the whole movie as tommy and you had to go get coffee with mark as a quest and go to your job at the bank as another quest. i miss new grounds

7:15 If you look you can clearly see that the back of the stairwell shed-thing on the roof is either open or closed at the back, when viewed from the back or front respectively, so they must've made one with a closed back where people are seen entering the roof, and a separate open-backed one just to show the backs of people walking up to the roof, in order to sell that it's an actual stairwell people are walking up, and not just an obvious cubicle they're just popping out of. This would have to be in a different location and thus partly explain why the roof scenes were so expensive; and that form of both clever and incongruous is just so Wiseau-ian. ;)

I had so many questions the first time I watched it. I'll re-watch it every few years , thinking I'll find some answers to previous questions, but instead I'm left with even more questions. I'll never learn my lesson.

If you watch the film at 1.25 or 1.5 speed, the delivery is bizarrely... normal? Makes me think that the film was too short after editing it and they slowed it down leading to the memes

I fixed the cassette plot hole. They used to make automatic tape recorders. Once the recorder picks up a loud enough signal it will start recording to tape.

I've never actually seen The Room but I basically know everything about it from internet osmosis. and I have to say, that scene with the football is far more bizarre and insane than anything I could have imagined.

I think the main problem with the plot is that we immediately find out Lisa's banging Mark. Like, a real, competent movie would hide that information from the audience to make for a dramatic reveal later on, and everything before that would have some direction as we follow a suspicious Johnny trying to prove there's an affair, and finding out who with. Then again, it would be such an obvious twist that the movie would still feel meandering and pointless.

I would love to see a remake of the room with the same plot and the same overall beats but just well acted and directed with the lines basically being the same but Rewritten to have them sound like something actual human beings would say. I think if you just look at the base elements of the story you could potentially have a good movie.

I have now seen Mr. Tommy Wiseau's cinematic tour-de-force, 'The Room' three times. With each viewing, 'The Room' becomes more complexly entangled in and inseparable from my own life. I no longer know where The Room ends and I begin. It is, without question, the worst film ever made. But this comment is in no way meant to be discouraging. Because while The Room is the worst movie ever made it is also the greatest way to spend a blisteringly fast 100 minutes in the dark. Simply put, 'The Room' will change your life. It's not just the dreadful acting or the sub-normal screenplay or the bewildering direction or the musical score so soaked in melodrama that you will throw up on yourself or the lunatic-making cinematography; no, there is something so magically wrong with this movie that it can only be the product of divine intervention. If you took the greatest filmmakers in history and gave them all the task of purposefully creating a film as spectacularly horrible as this not one of them, with all their knowledge and skill, could make anything that could even be considered as a contender. Not one line or scene would rival any moment in The Room. The centerpiece of this filmic holocaust is Mr. Tommy Wiseau himself. Without him, it would still be the worst movie ever made, but with him it is the greatest worst movie ever made. Tommy has been described as a Cajun, a Croatian cyborg, possibly from Belgium, clearly a product of Denmark, or maybe even not from this world or dimension. All of these things are true at any one moment. He is a tantalizing mystery stuffed inside an enigma wrapped in bacon and smothered in cheese. You will fall in love with this man even as you are repelled by him from the first moment he steps onto screen with his long Louis the Fourteenth style black locks and thick triangular shoulders packed into an oddly fitting suit, and his metallic steroid destroyed skin. Tommy looks out of place, out of time and out of this world. There has never been anything else like him. Nor will there ever be. The Room begins with 'Johnny' (Tommy Wiseau) and his incomprehensibly evil fiancée 'Lisa' (played by a woman with incongruously colored eyebrows and a propensity for removing her shirt) engaging in some light frottage, joined by, Denny, (played with a deft sense of the absurd by Phillip Haldiman), their sexually confused teenage neighbor who is clearly suffering from a form of aged decrepitude. When Denny, who looks like the human version of Gleek the monkey from Superfriends, says, in a slightly creepy yet playful tone of voice, 'I like to watch!' as Johnny and Lisa roll around the bed in a pre-intercourse ritual revolving around rose petals, you know you are in for a very special movie. After a lengthy lovemaking scene (not to worry if you miss it the first time, they show it again in its entirety later in the movie) in which Tommy's bizarre scaly torso and over-anatomized rear-end are lovingly depicted over and over again as he appears to hump Lisa's hip, we discover that Lisa, for no particular reason, has become bored with Tommy's incessant lovemaking and decides to leave him. Just when you think the movie might lapse into an ordinary, pedestrian sort of badness, Johnny's best friend Mark, a man who's job seems to be to wear James Brolin's beard from Amityville Horror, shows up and electrifies the screen with a performance so wooden that it belongs in the lumber section of Home Depot. Incidentally, Mark is played by Greg Sestero, who, in addition to being described as a department store mannequin, was also the line producer on 'The Room' and one of Tommy Wiseau's five (5!!!!!) assistants on the movie. Lisa forces Mark, amid his paltry, unconvincing protests, to have an affair with her on their uncomfortable circular stairs. For no apparent reason Lisa decides that she is made of pure evil and wants to torture her angelic and insanely devoted fiancé, Johnny. Lisa receives pointed advice from her mother who casually announces that she is dying of breast cancer and then never mentions it again. But Lisa is determined to make Johnny's life a living hell, in spite of the fact that she, according to her mother, "cannot survive on her own in the cutthroat 'computer business'". But not before they recycle the sex scene from earlier in the movie where we get another bird's eye view of Johnny's ludicrous naked body. Denny gets into trouble with a drug dealer. Mark shaves his beard. Tommy gets drunk on an unusual cocktail made from mixing whiskey and vodka. Lisa lies and tells everyone that Tommy hit her in a drunken rage. A balding psychologist appears out of nowhere, offers some advice, then apparently dies while softly falling on the ground in an attempt to catch a football thrown by Mark. All of these seemingly disparate events build up to two cathartic moments. The first is when Tommy expressively yells at Lisa with the line 'You are tearing me apart Lisa!'. You will cheer at this line as you realize that the film has been tearing you apart the whole time. And the second is at Tommy's birthday party where the worst actor that has ever been born plays a unidentified man wearing a silk shirt who utters a phrase that perfectly describes the experience of watching The Room, 'It feels like I'm sitting on atom bomb that is going to explode!' The shocking ending will leave you pleading for some kind of sequel. See this film at all costs. See it twice. Or three times. Or as one kid that I met from Woodland Hills has, 12 times! See it until you can recite every precious line of dialogue this movie has to offer. Let The Room become your new religion and Tommy Wiseau your prophet preaching the gospel according to Johnny.
