Wow and there are 40 spaces around the board too, so it doesn't get offset after one lap. I guess you hope to draw some card that moves you to one of the odd spaces?
And it means you can't even buy some of the properties in that case! And even if you could, nobody else will ever land on them! The most fundamental part of the game is ruined by that one rule change!
Or you could get a card that puts you on a property to get to the other "track" (even and odd tracks). But of course, then you're stuck on that one until something happens.
to be more specific, since you are always doubling your roll you always move an even number of spaces. since the board itself is merely the length from corner to corner four times that is also an even number. Hence its impossible to land on an odd numbered space.
Tom, if the rules had been written well, you'd understand that your playthrough from 6:15 to 7:00 was the way you are supposed to play the game. Don't know if it helps, but figured I'd let you know.
The game does sound terrible. The thing that gets me is the double the roll value rule. Because the board itself has an even number of squares, doubling the roll every time you move means you will never land on half of the spaces on the board. Assuming this shares the rules of monopoly aside from what tom mentioned, this means that you will never be able to build trailers because certain properties will never be landed on. Having a rule oversight this huge is hilarious.
Fun Fact Monopoly actually was stolen from an older game called the Land Lordgame. Also there were lawsuits calling anything with opoly at the end of a word as copyright infringement. Hasbro lost which is why you see Puppyopoly, Horseopoly etc not made by Hasbro. Hasbro does not have a monopoly on the suffix opoly.
@GamersGrind, good points. There's an interesting book written by Ralph Anspach, inventor of the game "Anti-Monopoly", called "The Billion Dollar Monopoly® Swindle", where the author discribes his battle over his game's name, and how he discovered the "original" inventor of "Monopoly", Charles B. Darrow, was a fraud, and therefore Parker Brothers had no copyright case.
As a fellow boardgamer I love playing GOOD games like the rest of you...but Tom I beg you to make more reviews like this for terrible games. This just made my day and I laughed so hard. Great Review...
@GebBuxton, you say "how offensive the terminology was", have you seen the artwork of "Zombies!!!" or similar games? That's why they're rated 14 and up, and why I didn't let my little brother play them until he was older than Vasal's girls. Heard of "Blood Feud in New York"? OK game, nicely produced and sold off quick on huge discount when WalMart realized what the theme was. As well "War on Terror", an OK game, was returned for free from it's retailer for the same reason. (con't)
What I find interesting is that if the designers were so insistent on Tom reviewing this, they must have been convinced that the game is just awesome. I'm sure they will sell a few copies just because of the theme (just like *lots* of crappy opoly ripoffs) but how they can think it's truly a great game is beyond me.
if you want to play a good alternate version of monopoly i HIGHLY recommend the electronic version where there is a calculator that controls all the money via credit cards it's WAY faster and actually a fun game as a result
@GebBuxton, (con't) You ask "if you want to buy it and bring it to the table", sorry I was a kid when I thought Monopoly was a good game, it's not. Doesn't change the fact that in the poor neighborhood I grew up in, many of my now adult friends would probably enjoy getting drunk while playing something offensive like Redneckopoly. "don't know the origin of the term 'Cracker'", no don't know it other than a derrogatory term. Wiki'd crack the wip on slaves, among other theories or origin.
If you like listening to people riff on garbage games, check out the Flip the Table podcast. They're an incredibly funny group who dig up some real gems.
I normally really enjoy all your content Tom. However this time I feel you were holding yourself back from letting us know what you really thought of this game. So could you just remove any ambiguities you may have left in this video?
@Gebbuxton, you say "uses the term 'cracker'. Pretty offensive as a white southerner", and that's *ONE* example. Listen at 5:30 "There's many things in this game that are gonna be offensive to many people...be warned", including the artwork, but you could only name ONE thing. Bet the girls could name a few dozen things. Got to give some respect to anyone that put the time and effort into creating a game, and as bad as this game is, there's a market for monopoy variants and offensive themes.
Great stuff. I'm sure I had more fun watching your girls destroy the game than I would have actually playing the game. Thanks for squashing this bag of flaming poo for us!
and many that he did review have been great and a much better representation of what board games can and should actually be. As always I enjoyed the review Tom. :)
There are SO MANY ...opoly clones I wouldn't be suprised if this was real. If it was a troll its a well earned troll given the trolls had to pay to put the game together and ship it. If it was a troll the trolls are the real losers in this
I guess I would disagree with you - only because at no time did anyone put any time into "creating" this game. it is a parody at best and copyright infringement at worst. The person who designed this (and the other monopoly re-skins) just slap a theme on "Monopoly". There are some legal issues why Hasbro can't sue every one of these folks - but lets not go out of our way to call it creativity.
I think they knew it was garbage and just wanted more publicity. Not a terrible idea since the kind of people who would want to buy this game will do so if only they hear about it. I'm not sure those people are the type to watch The Dice Tower but publicity is publicity.
In any case it really isn't worth the debate, I just wanted to point out how offensive the terminology was. Given that, I have no respect for this game company or its "designers". I can promise you if it was dropping the "N" word it would have been pulled from the shelves of every store that had the poor decision to stock it. It is just a reality that a lot of people don't know the origin of the term "Cracker". But hey, if you want to buy it and bring it to the table, have at it.
I know that maybe for safety reasons he didn't, but Tom that game should have burned. A watery death at the hands of your daughters is too good for it.
This was just sad. They wasted a whole dollar printing this game. That could of went to something useful, like inflating tires or to a buy a can of soda. I just hope this doesn't backfire and get Tom sent lots of crap to review because any press is good press.
I would say this was the most negative review I have seen but to be fair the game looks pretty equally terrible. Being that I hate monopoly and as someone mentioned elsewhere (either vasal or some other game review person) that monopoly pretty much ruined what people consider board games to be. It was an awful game that pretty much has 0 choice other than to buy or not to buy (which 99% of the time is to buy unless you cant afford it). Since then played several games much of which vasal reviewed
I would have saved the components to reuse for other (good) games. But that would mean that I would have to buy this piece of garbage. Not going to happen.
Can't land on even spaces? Presumably there are cards that send players to specific spaces, potentially trapping them onto all the odd spaces for awhile. I wouldn't know because who the hell would ever play this poo-bedecked poo pile?
