8:15 An efficiency of only 90%? Should the controller heat the house? Victron: Hold my beer. (Around 98%)

Hey Brad. I have a Sunwhale 20a 12/24 charge controller and both charge pro and the redodo app works on it. The only difference is my sunwhale looks like a Bouge RV charge controller with the little magnetic cover for the screw terminals.

Awesome, yeah I think they are all made by Helios.

This is exactly the HQST Charge controller. Just rebranded, or if I may say “repainted”😂😂. Litime also rebranded it to too. I suppose it is thesame manufacturer that is making it for the three of them. HQST, Litime and Redodo. It us exactly thesame charge controller.

Somewhat similar to my BougeRv charge controller only thing different with mine is it also does 36 and 48 volt battery systems. I also noticed a difference in voltage with the app i have. I should have rebooted the App like you did and see if it was reading the same as my Renogy Shut voltage. I'll try rebooting next time i noticed a difference. Redodo seems to make quality stuff. Maybe ill go with them when its time to upgrade my battery system. Interesting video Brad thanks.

@Brad Cagle Great, can you make a statement regarding HF interference in the radio. I am an amateur radio operator and am looking for a solar charge controller that does not cause interference in radio operation. Most charge controllers are very annoying. Many greetings from Germany

I was thinking about that. I did find a super cheap one from amazon. We'll see if it's any soon.

So it's the HQST 40a model plus $40 for the blue color to appease the Victron fanboys?

For my money, the 60A HQST, (rebranded Renogy) with low-temp charging protection, is the best value going in small to medium charge controllers.

Same as the battery voltage.

You're over-paneling the charge controller during your efficiency test. You're getting the max out of the controller. If you want to measure the actual efficiency, you'll need to lower the input wattage to some amount that the charge controller can output. As it currently is, the efficiency is artificially low based on the solar you're pumping into it. You could make the efficiency go even lower by putting more power into it... but the controller won't ever go over that 40a max.
@BradCagle
@BradCagle Год назад
Hmm, I'm skeptical, but curious, so i'll test your claim. Thanks!
@BradCagle
@BradCagle Год назад
UIPDAT: I just removed one panel, and even partially shaded a cell from another. I was under the 40A, like 38A now, but still basically the same result, I came up with 91% efficiency, which is probably in margin of error. Thanks.
@ModernSurvivalSense
@ModernSurvivalSense Год назад
@@BradCagle That's doesn't seem to line up with was posted in the video. What I brought up is mathematically verifiable. Unless the charge controller allows for greater than 40a charging, it was at its ceiling. If the charge controller is sitting at it's maximum charging capability, putting more solar into the charge controller would skew the numbers to being less efficient. Again, this isn't an opinion... The controller allows for more solar input than it can output. The bigger the difference between the two, the less efficient it will appear. The excess wattage is dissipated as heat.
@BradCagle
@BradCagle Год назад
@@ModernSurvivalSense MPPT controllers do not burn off excess as heat. If they do not want more power the micro processor will changed the duty cycle of the MOSFETS limiting the power. Now you're thinking of a linear regulator, these do burn off excess as heat. MPPT controllers use a switching topology. Thanks
@ModernSurvivalSense
@ModernSurvivalSense Год назад
@@BradCagle sorry, all excess wattage is burned off as heat. Energy is never created or destroyed. If it’s not going into the battery, it MUST go somewhere. MPPT controllers are known to be able to be over-paneled. It’s one of their benefits over PWM.

Another rebranded product. I'm sure it's a decent product, and at a reasonable price point. I like all of the brand competition, because it's driving prices down quite a bit, but it's becoming obvious just how few actual manufacturers there are for these things.
@BradCagle
@BradCagle Год назад
Right, yeah it's an age old Chinese strategy. One company makes the product, and private labels to a ton of basically "marketing" companies. It's really efficient if you think about it. The real manufacture will have massive buying power driving the price down. The marketing companies will compete, and place large orders to get a better price, etc.. Thanks!
