I really like how Bill Simmons uses the phrase "I really enjoyed his game" to discuss players. In a discussion of careers, keeping basketball as poetry despite all the stats, is just something I think a lot of basketball analysis ( all sports analysis really) just drops the ball on. This is about enjoyment. Not that stats don't matter, or that it's not about competition, but it's also about poetics. I just think it's a more respectful wholistic way to discuss sports.

@@TheShadow84 The 1996 was one of the best classes ever, but FWIW Wallace likely would have gone undrafted most years. Nobody knows for certain what any of these guys are going to eventually become, but you do look for certain skills and physical tools. All anybody knew about Wallace on draft day was that he was a 6-7 body who couldn't shoot or finish in traffic. He played at a Division II school and didn't dominate that either. Now, Charles Oakley played at the same school, and Dennis Rodman went to a school nobody ever heard of, and those guys went on to careers as great rebounders and defenders, but before that, they were 25 ppg scorers against low level college competition. Wallace was a 13 ppg scorer against a lesser field. If all you know about a prospect is that he was unimpressive in Division II and can't finish, you're not going to stake your job on him.

Man frfr! Crawford literally had a 20 year NBA career and was a 3-time 6th man of the year award winner. They talking about him like he was low key a bum SMH

Honestly winning several 6th MOY awards just tell me you ain't that good all around to be a starter. I always take into account who the coach is because Manu didn't win it because he would start some games because Pop was a game to game coach, but if you have a season-rotation coach and next season you still on the bench you lack something important.
@Riles3152
@Riles3152 Год назад
@@ralphmorales3692 Man winning the 6th man of the year multiple times is nothing to dismiss. Everybody has a role to play. Not everybody is meant to be a superstar or even a #2 or #3 type guy. Jamal found his niche as instant buckets off the bench, just like Lou Williams. Just like Vinny "Microwave" Johnson, and turned that into a 20 year career. He did something incredibly RIGHT to be able to stick around for that long.

If players still spent four years in college, the 2000 draft would have been the draft of the class borned in 1978: Kobe, Dirk, Marion, Bibby, Jeemaine O'Neal... From 1995 on a lot of High School players made an early entrance in the NBA. That's why from 1999 to 2002 draft classes were so dissapointing.
@75aces97
@75aces97 2 года назад
Underrated point. When the NBA put in the rookie sakary scales, players wanted to get their first 4 NBA years over with, so instead coming out one year early, they came out after 1 year. Then when teams didn't hesitate to draft super raw talent, players said screw it, and skipped college entirely. Then it was just a matter of time before classes were fished out.

Darius Miles wasn’t just some long guy. First of all, he was CRAZY long. Second of all, he had talent. I think it was more that he was a stoner with no work ethic. And in any case, being long is just so important in basketball. If you’ve played basketball on any level including in the park, you know how much a guy with long arms can hurt you... It’s just as important as height.

24:41 Rusillo makes some good points about long, athletic "upside" guys, and how bad teams would give guys lots of minutes in year 2 to prove they suck so they can cut their losses. But then guys like Simmons still fall for the fraud where eventual busts get a bump in minutes, so they put up empty stats. "Well, he averaged like 18 ppg that year," for a team that was out of the playoff hunt by January.

Jamaal Magloire and Joel Przybilla were on the Blazers at the same time. Przybilla was banged up that year and was not having his best season, but there was still no question -- the Blazers were MUCH better with Przybilla on the floor. In fact, Przybilla did more to add value when he was on the court than any of the three guys he played with in Portland who were drafted ahead of him here (Magloire, Miles, Crawford) did in their Portland stints.
