Reduce Chlorine in Your Pool - Remington Solar Ionizer

I have a diving pool so I bought a 2nd one. I am SO glad I bought them!! My pool hasn't been so consecutively clear in the 20 years we've lived here. With chlorine prices being so high, these iodinizers are wonderful!! A couple bags of shock a couple times a month (since I live in Arizona) - no brainer

I am a Florida Pool Service Contractor and have installed many similar inline copper/silver products. This product introduces copper as a an algae killing sanitizer which does kill algae. It is not an oxidizer so your pool water will not be blue or kill everything unless you add an oxidizer (chlorine +/-) to it. The main problem is that metals are what permanently stains pools and you are purposely introducing copper to the pool. Just a matter of time until you have a water balance problem and you stain the pool blue/green, charcoal, the oxidation colors of copper. If you have a pool that is stained already and you can't keep algae out, this would be worth a shot.

Looks like it's just adding copper to the pool slowly as you mentioned. Sometimes ionizers also release silver into the water. Similar results can be achieve by adding copper/silver Algaecide. A lot of pool algaecides have copper in them. I stopped and switched to non-metal algaecides 5+ years ago after my pool 40,000 gallon (vinyl liner) started developing copper stains. Staining is one of the possible problems from using copper in your pool. I had to use Metal Out a couple times to remove the stains. - You do still need to keep some chlorine in your pool (possible a lower free chlorine levels though) and shock occasionally to kill everything off. You can't just stop using chlorine all together. The copper cannot kill everything alone. The copper will help keep algae out of the pool. It also can't shock the pool. I know there is some debate on the efficacy of ionizers. I havn't done a lot of research on the subject lately. It was a a trend 15+ years ago as well. I had one on my pool for a few years. I do know at some point you will want to remove the device from your pool or turn it off when the copper level is where you want it. You don't want the copper level to just keep rising. - One of the most important things I can suggest to people is keeping track of your Stabilizer/conditioner level (cyanuric acid). You may want to get yours checked. It looks too high. 30-50 is the recommended levels for chlorine pools. 50 ppm if in a sunny area. Cyanuric acid is the chemical that protects the chlorine in your pool from the sun. Too little cyanuric acid (< 30 ppm) and all the chlorine in your pool can be destroyed by the sun in a couple hours. Too high (above 70-80 ish) and the chlorine can't do it's job. Chlorine lock occurs. Stabilizer doesn't get consumed over time. You have to drain water out and replace it to lower the cyanuric acid level. The only way it leaves is when the water is diluted or replaced (pumped out and then add water or diluted by rain, then pumped out). You really need a decent test kit or just have a pool store check the level. Test strips are hard to read and are not very accurate. Stabilizer is found in most chlorine tablets and shock packets. It's the "other ingredients" on some of the Shock labels. Over time with use of "Shock" and the chlorine tabs the level of cyanuric acid in the pool will just keep going up, even year after year. It's one of the reasons I suggest people just buy stabilizer, get the level in your pool where you want it and then just use liquid chlorine or "unstabilized" chlorine granules. The higher the level of cyanuric acid in your pool the higher you need to keep the free chlorine level and you must shock at a much higher chlorine levels. Side note: It's better to add chlorine or shock a pool in the late evening when the sun is going down or night so the chlorine has a chance to work before the sun starts attacking the chlorine in the morning. - 5 years ago I did switch to a Saltwater Chlorine Generator. Once the pool is clean and clear in the spring. I get the cyanuric acid level to around 60-80 ppm. Salt chlorine pools recommend higher levels of cyanuric acid levels since they slowly add (trickle) chlorine in and their chlorine is more taxed by the sun. The salt systems make it so you don't have to keep adding chlorine or tabs all the time. It trickles chlorine through out the day and keeps the chlorine levels a lot more stable for long periods. I do think the water feels softer as well. For my pool I set my chlorine generator at around 30% with a t-15 cell. It keeps my free chlorine in the 1-3 ppm range all the time. I do on occasion (heavy rain or heavy swimmer load) add a gallon of liquid chlorine. Salt cells can't raise the level quickly. It's easier to just add some chlorine than cranking the cell up and use the cell up. If the Combined Chlorine level gets high in my pool, I do shock the pool "raise the level of Free Chlorine to "shock levels" for the amount of cyanuric acid in the pool. (maybe once a month or so I add 2-3 gallons of liquid chlorine in the evening to shock). - Side note. You don't really save money with a Salt Chlorine pool. The system has a high initial cost with less cost over time versus tabs/chlorine. You spend $800-$1200 up front for the system and then you don't have to buy nearly as much chlorine and no tabs for the next 3-5 years or until the $300-$500 cell needs replaced. Cell life depends on what setting you have to use it at. It is a consumable. That is why it is better to oversize your salt cell. Lower setting, longer life. - Another tip: I have a sand filter. They can't filter very small particles < 25-50 Micron. You can add some DE powder (~1 cup) via the skimmer to the sand filter to raise it's pressure 1 psi.. The DE powder will cause the sand filter to filter much smaller particles making the water clearer. - I highly recommend poolcalculator.com to figure out the amount of chemicals to use for a pool. - Long post: I've just been reading a lot lately about pool care. I bought one earlier this month and have been astounded how well it works. I'll never go back to chlorine! This thing will pay for itself in a couple of months easily! I bought some copper test strips too just to make sure the level doesn't get too high.

I had a horrible algae problem 3 years ago and was ready to drain the pool and do the acid wash when I found this thing. It cleared the pool up within a week or so and I haven't seen the problem since. So I guess I can say that it works as advertised. I clean it once a week.

I purchased mine a year ago and I love it! Yes you still need a little chlorine and in the hot weather in Florida I also shock it once a week. You have to make sure you clean it every 7-10 day. I was battling yellow algae and black algae and my pool person was at her wits end. Now when she tests my water..it shows only a trace of chlorine but it is crystal clear! I would highly recommend this product. I'm just trying to find out how long the solar panel works for?

If you have to shock once a week then you are saving nothing but a few nickels here and there. You risk staining your cement pond if you don’t monitor closely. I did the math on my 35k pool. 50 lbs of shock costs as much as 50 pounds of chlorine right now. I don’t have to check for copper weekly and subsequently daily as the levels rise.

The product works. Reduced chlorine and all spots of green and black on pool walls disappeared; however, after just 2 swimming seasons and 2 anodes, the thread on the screw that secures the anode to the body has corroded. It appears that the screw can not be replaced. The unit is now an expensive pool float. Not impressed.

Thanks for the video. Quick question; Do we know if these ionizers pose any risk to the robot vacuum parts long term? I know it is important to monitor the copper via strips and keep it under .5 and I never leave my cleaner in the pool for longer than a few hours to clean and remove.

You risk copper staining on your pool walls when it exceeds .2 levels. Be careful. I would not recommend.
