Reduce Noise with Noise Assist

This video describes how to enable Noise Assist, the noise reduction plugin for the MixPre series recorders.
Note that in the menu, you'll have to assign which input you'd like the plugin to act upon. It can only noise reduce ONE input, so choose wisely!
It can also noise reduce the entire LR mix, if you'd like that option, although better results are obtained by focusing on the key channel you're recording. That may be a boom mic, or a Lav, etc.

Thank you for such a good demo of it in action! Reminds me of my setup- a bit open, no crazy amount of acoustic wall treatment. Very cool. Can you use this for voiceover work or would it create those "artifacts" people sometimes mention? Do YOU use more than one microphone to see how to apply it to a "Left or Right Bus"?

You COULD use this for VO work, but I'd rather do it in post, unless you're in Radio and on super tight deadlines, but even then probably not. Whatever one does with this, keep it at 3 or under for the amount of reduction used. If one needed more reduction than 3, I'd save that for post. It's pretty amazing for pushing the noise into the background, but it's not an eliminator, just a reducer. I listen for the "S" sounds in speech, and when the reduction is pushed too far, those sibilants become smeary and mushy; a clear sign that damage is being done to the signal. If kept minimal, this is a powerful tool, especially for folks who don't have time or expertise for post noise reduction (not that it takes much these days!). :) One of my students uses it on the LR bus and gives that to editors and directors to cut with. Then the iso tracks are treated later where needed. This seems to be a decent workflow.

@@fmsatech3907 Thank you for this insight. I didn’t consider the post side using an application I already have. I’ll wait until I truly find the field need and cutting down my editing time.

When in a hurry, 3 dB of this in an interview can work well enough. If more than that is needed, do it in post with Cedar, iZotope, or ReNovator, etc. @@aSimpleChat

Sort of what Davinci Resolve put in the studio version of the software. Making this plugin not worth it for me. AI is killing everything.

Agreed - but for folks who don't use DAWs, this may be useful, if used at tastefully low levels (2-3dB reduction).
