In Boy Scouts, "Tenderfoot" is the first rank, meaning a rookie or a novice. I fell in love with the way the word sounded - the imagery is sharp in my head. People ask me why this song is titled so, and for me, it's this. In a lot of ways, we are beginners at truly loving ourselves. So many things about ourselves, we hate. We give ourselves a hard time, even when we're doing our best. I'm always rediscovering how to be kinder to myself. It's easy to forget, so I'm always starting over. But that's okay.
I've been playing Tenderfoot for 2 years now, and I wrote this song because I needed to hear it. Such a personal song, coming from a hard place. It's a reminder to listen to our needs because WE are important. To love ourselves, even when it's most difficult.
I also wrote this song for my listeners who have shared personal stories and struggles with me. A lot of them fight through each day, carrying unkind thoughts about themselves. It hurts me to think that we could be so cruel to ourselves sometimes. And I get that, too. Every now and then, a dark cloud of thought reigns over me, and sometimes I let it win. But each day, I can only try to do better. And I hope to do myself better every day.
Huge thanks to my patrons over at Secret Song Society for writing the lyrics that I've projected on the screen. I took their handwriting and created individual artworks for each slide. Getting the timing down to perfection was a challenge! The OHP projector is a thing of my childhood I haven't revisited in a long while. To Ms. Reese, I want to say thank you for this song. I just happened to listen to it one day and it surprised me that this song put into words what I exactly feel. I've heard of artists sharing their personal experiences through songs, well, most of the personal songs we hear today are all depressing and heart-breaking and it only triggers the sad emotions of the listeners. This song is sad but it's a full of love kind of sad. Reese might have triggered the sad emotions that we have but she didn't leave us having that feeling for the entire song. She did it to even more plant HOPE in our hearts by concluding that we have all the chances and choices to do better each day.

as your song goes with you wish you could rescue the blind man you saw on the streets, I just wanna say that you saved me with this song :') thank you for speaking out the dark thoughts that i have been keeping inside my head for a while now and making me feel better at the same time. Your song understood me. its like your song talked to me, helped me sort out myself and made me feel that i'm not the only one that might have some thoughts like this. I dont want to talk about the things that have been keeping me awake crying at night to my friends, and it doesn't mean that i dont trust them or anything. I just cant involve other people in my own mind's mess. This is my battle. I have to sort things out by myself. I have to be strong enough for myself. Worries, and problems I've set aside built up a huge void inside me that brought me in this edge. I was about to make a decision that I would have regretted in the future but your song did some magic on me. Thank you.
