Liking that Davey Boy!! I have a slightly different version to that where you can screw two canisters together but I have successfully refilled a few with no problems. Saves a fortune and as you say, no point in carrying a half empty canister, might as well fill it up before you go...
Hi thanks for that. The version I have is years old and the lid does not hold the recess in it, too early I think, I have seen it on newer ones but it never bothers me.
I have ordered the adapters to put a mixture of butane and propane into my little 4 oz cannisters, to get a hotter burn for winter backpacking. I figure the butane will absorb some of the excess pressure of the propane, and give me a bit of safety versus pure propane.
The only catch is butane freezes at .5 C so it’s not going to burn if used in winter conditions unless you warm it up with body heat before using, so use the original iso mix that comes in the can or from the larger can in colder months then refill with butane for spring through summer to early autumn, but countries that never go below freezing in winter can use butane all yr
I tent to fill for the winter with an iso mix winter gas rated down to well below freezing. I also sleep with the can in the footbix of my sleeping bag
Nice overview Dave! I think your scales off (if these are 8oz/220g canisters) an empty can is about 140 g and a full can 365 g. The 8oz cans are clearly marked with 220g which is the amount of gas. So 220+140 is 360g which is ~ 365 g quoted. At least that’s my experience with these. Might get a valve with the threads on both ends. Work great! Thanks for posting!
Hi, thanks for all that but the cans that fit in the 900ml pots and jetboil flash are the 100 gram cans, so 200 grams on the scales if the weight of the can plus 100 grams of gas.

This is a great wee video,I really like it. Can you please post a link to where you can purchase the adapter? I go on motorcycle rallies and the small can fits in the jetboil beautifully, I can take the larger can , but it's bulky. If I employ your advice this'll work a treat for me. Thank you for you posting/proving this works.

I do, and most who do this do, you can get an iso mix if you want to but you need 2 different adaptors. Also there is a different adapter where you can refill from bigger iso mix cans
Hi mate, I have done this recently but I have found the gas canister doesn't work as well in cold conditions. I have to warm canister up with my hands almost straight away to get quick boil times and a full flame. Is this something you have experienced? I have used gas thats meant for colder weather also. Cheers
Hi, yes I experienced Exactly the same. There are a couple of things you can do. When I get to camp, I pop the can in my coat for 20 mins or so to warm it up, this works really well. I also pop the can in my foot box of my quilt / sleeping bag at night, then in the morning it's nice and toasty and runs well. I have tried cold weather gas and it has the same issues. If the can is warm, no problems whatsoever.
The reason for chilling the receiver canister is to condense the liquid inside and create a vacuum. Then it does not matter if you only have a little gas left in the tall can, as its liquid, and the receiver can is effectively sucking, you should be able to get 99% of the liquid gas out. Hope that helps
