Ryan is a true OG. I used to run 3S tournaments in London and it was scary seeing how quickly he went from "That Tekken guy" to "best Ken in Europe." Amazing hearing about his breakdown of Third Strike, I wished he told some of us scrubs more about those things way back when! 😆

Except his breakdown of 3rd Strike reversals is incorrect. You can always wakeup reversal in 3rd Strike, tech rolling has nothing to do with it. Nothing against him as a player, but his breakdown was wrong.

1:01:52 I agree with Ryan SO much on this. Even for me, as a spectator, first to 3/3 out of 5 is the best damn part of the whole thing. It's where you see the most player expression, where you see the best comebacks, where you see the highest level of play, the whole shebang. Like he says, I could watch this shit for hours on end and never get bored. And that's not even taking into account when if I start playing myself. Sometimes, during a 2 out of 3, you can't help but feel that one player just got the wool pulled over their eyes and that cost them the whole set.

The conversation around the “best of” reminds me of when the UFC main events were 3 rounds and then they made the change to 5 rounds for the main and co-main events (and all title fights) to allow fighters to really display their skill and abilities. Fan loved it because we got more action and the value of the product went up. Sure some fights can be boring, but when you get that one match that was absolutely nuts and you’re screaming at the top of your lungs in excitement and hype, it all becomes worth it. That’s what this shit is about!

A great start to have someone like Ryan to talk about "back in the dayz". The fact thesedays, majority interviewers tends to forget the old players and focus on the recent established or upcoming players, so happy to see someone (Chris T) to acknowledge and respect where it all began and having arguably the best EU player during the 90s onwards. I myself been around london and played Ryan, and he is the only player during the time that felt "different", like back then nobody played like the top japanese players in fighting games around London area (the main hub), and Ryan had that in him in terms of reaction, timing, whiff punish, yomi, etc. Mad respect for this interview. Thanks! Brings back good memories 👍

Chris T first I want to say thank you for this content 🙏. Kicking the show off with Ryan is definitely awesome. I love showcasing the goats of the FGC. This a way to pay homage but also way to show how the arcade era was brutal. It took me back to a time when wasn’t no love in the arcade and you had to pay to play. Memory lane for me as I was a youngster during that time trying to compete with Adults but I wanted it and I loved it. I believe those time periods made me mature faster and really be a student of the games. So when Chris T broke out the pad and took notes and asked questions that really just brought joy to me. While he a top player he still a student and learning 🤘💯. The last thing I will touch on is when Chris talked about the wheel spinning in his head while playing. I use to think I was crazy back then to now, that I was the only one with a wheel running in my mind while playing. But after hearing Ryan ask what’s your plan? And are you winning? Those things hit me extra hard as some times the wheel is running but I have no plan but I am winning or I have a plan but trying to implement it has me losing. Why I love this community. Let’s keep learning and growing 🤘💯

Loved listening to Ryan's insight but i think we see more stronger players now, not just because the games are easier but also because the knowledge is more available. If you wanted to be good in the 90's, you had to go to an arcade that also had great players to train with. Now, everyone is able to play strong players online, and information like combos and tech are figured out in weeks instead of years, in my opinion.
@DayFul

Not just that but if you didn't have a community locally you had to travel to play strong players and level up. I was doing 5 hour coach trips to London to play Tekken tag 1 but it wasn't sustainable.

33:40 is SUCH good advice. If you ware watching this video and you don't take anything else from it but this. You'll level your game up ( and IRL goals) if you listen to what he says here and apply it. It's also why SF6 is so stressful, the game has depth but it also is just a lot of guessing in certain situations that make the attacker feel as stressed as the defender.. aka the corner.

kyokuji is a canadian player, his main game is sfa3. he’s like top 10 ken in NA, you should try playing queege or neem on fc some time if you wanna play a top 3 NA ken. i kinda get what kevin hart was saying but you can do invuln reversals after tech rolling in 3s. there are a lot of OSs that let 3s players insulate themselves against weaker players, there’s so much that goes unseen in a 3s match. there’s deeper knowledge and technique in 3s, whereas in newer games everything is very much up front. you can play anyone and be scared because of how easy offense is to enforce. there’s no way to control or slow down the game while on defense in sf6, unlike 3s. 3s has characters like oro and urien that punish you massively for pushing offense mindlessly. sf6 gives you several all or nothing options and pretends it’s defensively well rounded.

Hey Chris great show. For sure needed. I think the issue you ran into with guile or knockdown is they have too many options. That the point. Guile can now wake up and parry high and low attacks into throwing you into corner. That way too powerful yet he has that as an option. He can Flash Kick. He can backdash to bait throws, he can mash into half life. I need people to realize that none of this was options before in older games. You could not back dash in the corner to 50% off someone life because they went for a 10% throw. You could not just parry everything at the same time?!?!?! Also have access to Flash Kick, etc. The point is they have given the defender an insane amount of options that not only helps them get back into the game, it makes them take over the game. That is brand new to fighting games. The ability to go from being on defense to winning the round at such a high clip. It makes offensive pressure much worst and way more dangerous and that the point. Your fighting the developers more then the players. Also that overload you feel in neutral. That the point as well. You need to point your questions at the developers. When your overloaded in neutral, that by design. This allows for me people to compete. That the point. This is a business. Your playing a business product now.

I was like " so-so " about Chris T, but after watching the Ryan Hart and Mike Ross interviews (I watched the Mike Ross one first then went back to this one) I have more respect for Chris. You can't be afraid to be yourself, be the best version of yourself in all ways (mind, body, soul) and once again, don't be afraid to be yourself. It's the only way to be free. Almost every person I knew who was themselves to the very end always escaped a shitty 9-5 or found some way to make side money doing what they love at the very least. DONT BE AFRAID, most people live afraid.

Great discussion! This was very insightful. I understand your frustrations Chris. Investors and venture capital put far too much emphasis in only expanding the audience and player base of the FGC rather than putting mechanisms in place to creatively nurture, foster, and cultivate the scene. As a result, there's this lack of balance and it creates this weird cultural cesspool amongst players that you spoke about, as well as the silo mentality. Japan isn’t perfect but the West could definitely learn some things from them when it comes to shaping the perception and culture around these games. Y'all presented many great ideas as well. Keep up the great work!

Been a fan of fighting games since I was a kid but only became aware of FGC and high level tournament competition etc the last few years. I'm a few years older than you but it's interesting hearing all these perspectives and philosophies while trying to get better at fighting games when I'm long past the prime of when people like yourself and Ryan started "getting good". Interesting podcast. Only feedback about interviewing is there's a couple of times when there's a long build up to a question - or you throw multiple questions in a row or "would you like to speak more about that". Not necessarily bad things but sometimes you see the person trying to figure out which part of the question to answer - or they're not entirely sure how to answer because the question is a bit vague - or which part of "that" they should elaborate on. Not sure if Ryan ever felt this. And obviously you're also trying to have a natural conversational flow. So there's a push and pull there. Good content and interested to listen to more!

Great episode, just a tip with your mic it'll sound alot better if you face it towards you and speak into it face on as the yeti is not a directional mic so pointing it towards your mouth will be picking up your voice projected into the room getting that 'roomy' sound. 🫡

Ofc Twitter is a childish environment that's more prone to trolling than intellectual conversations, the character limit itself ready dictated that. And it's not all inherent to fighting games and its immature community, you can check software engineering threads that you'd find more or less similar things, being by OPs that are trying to be controversial and provocative in research for attention or by commenters. Now in the FGC you also have those provocative kind of players, the best example being Punk, calling himself "da god", trashtalking everybody and whining when losing, those obviously deserve to be trolled.

Lovely start Chris!!! Really interesting and insightful podcast, I could listen to you and Ryan Hart talk about the fgs forever. On a positive feedback note, maybe you should think on getting a better mic or adjust it different, during min. 36, 45/46, 47:45... and other sections, your voice cuts off and it's not ideal. Keep it up this is amazing, all the best!! P.S: I just read your pinned comment, perfect!

IMO specific to the FGC change if I may (from a stream monster 09er perspective).. the reason the SF4 era was the 'golden era' , is cause of the quality of the game itself. It attracted the coolest, most unique & creative personalities from all over & from dif backgrounds. It united us. It produced this organic 'lighting in a bottle' type vibe. When SFV dropped, it gave newer players a false sense of confidence, because the games design. This false sense of confidence went to players heads & it spilled over to social media.. cause now 'I can beat Daigo, I'm the goat so I'm right about everything' type attitude. At the same time, IRL society generationally changed & social media became about clout. Players were more like "what's in it for me" vs "what's good for the community". So, if an SFV player didn't agree w/another person .. rather then discuss it, "I'll just cancel you" for not catering to my ego.

Loved the listen, earned a subscriber. However, the idea that there is no scene without top players, so our opinion on set length should be the priority is too simple. The reality is its a symbiotic relationship. You need the players for the spectacle, but you need the viewers to fund the spectacle, both are required. If people don't have the time to watch, then events on the scale the FGC demands arnt feasible. It's also not always a case that people are bored. The gaming audience is getting older, and has to be smarter with thier time use, which plays a role. THIS means if you require consistent levels of attention, you need to constantly bring in younger audiences who have the free time to sit down for 6 hours everyday of the weekend. TLDR: situation is a little more layered than its being made to sound.

Man hearing Ryan Heart talk makes me realize why he became a fighting game legend. He thinks about fighting games in such a profound way Edit: Listening to the bit about the ft3 format reminds me of when Daigo ran an sfiv tourney where every match is ft10. That was amazing

I want longer sets also. But then TOs must limit signups even more. But yea havin different types of events seems like a way forward. Also, online should always be first to three, free. Even on ranked, without a quit option until the end of the match. We suck cuz we are conditioned for ft2, and we allow one and doners with no punishment. If someone disconnects, should award the person that stayed the points

very good points and interesting topic conversation about the fgc thanks for doing this @christatarian2504. just wanted to say though I think you can really improve your lighting, not sure what you were using but even instead of getting a better light you can point the light at the wall and get a good bounce, it will look less harsh on your skin and background. Also your mic is side address meaning you should talk into the front (not the top). Looking forward to your next episodes!
