This week I'm back at Wastwater attempting to shoot some reflections at my favourite lake, Wastwater. I was frustrated in my attempts here, but if nothing else the views are always amazing!

Always enjoy a good waffle. I find it's always worthwhile taking a shot you don't think will work. To many times it turns out better than you one you thought was a guaranteed stoater... plus you always learn something.
@StuartMcGlennon

Haha yeah that happens a lot, a shot you think won’t work ends up being the best one lol funnily enough the one right at the start that i cocked up I actually liked the best as the light was a bit softer and you could see less of the clutter under the water, so you’re bang on

I barely use it round here Julian, I actually really enjoy using it for pure minimalist stuff though the landscape isn’t really like that round this way, I’d have rather the water just been a bit choppier it was that annoying inbetween state, neither one or t’uther.

Thoroughly enjoyed this Stuart even as much as the last one but for totally different reasons. Not going to jump down your throat as we have had some snow - just not in my local area and too far to travel under lockdown which is just typical !! Anyway enjoyed this for the no nonsense straight forward talking - I’ve been out many a time , enjoyed the outdoors and taken some lovely records of the trip, images I’m happy to print and hang on my walls so totally agree with you 💯 Great film and I’ll sign up for a bit of that art that is the written word !

Great to see some stunning locations :) I am having to make do with 10 mile hikes around Barnsley to try and find something photogenic ;) I have found the odd gem to be fair and am praying for some more snow and mist so I can revisit a few of them.

I think we've all been there, Stuart, so you're doing a great job of making us all feel better, in that we're all human and we all make mistakes. Like you, I tend to be more of a reactionary landscape photographer, but I wish I just instinctively knew what location, local to me, to rock up to and shoot when the prevailing conditions are either this, that or the other. It's one of those skills I lack and I wonder how I will ever learn them, especially as I don't have very much spare time in which to enjoy my photography. I think that's why, when I see the weather is predicted to be like this, I rarely go off and shoot, because I don't know where I should be heading to, to make the best out of the conditions. I just can't motivate myself to go out and find a spot, as I suppose I foresee myself driving around aimlessly and by the time I stop somewhere the moment has passed, or I've chosen the wrong place to stop. The question is, how do I get past this obstacle?
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Cheers Ian, it’s certainly a tough one especially when time is constrained that’s for sure, it’s a cliche answer but there’s no real shortcut other than painstaking scouting of your local area. Before going full time I spent endless hours (and still do, probably even more so now) in particularly poor conditions logging and recce’ing places in order to exploit them when the conditions were favourable. There’s no doubt it can be a tough ask in terms of motivation though you’ve just got to trust and have faith in the the process.
@ianpinion4997
@ianpinion4997 3 года назад
@@StuartMcGlennon , in the past I have been out and about to recce various locations, though I think a combination the time of day and time of year I chose to visit was probably all wrong, not to mention visiting when the weather conditions were far from ideal too. I think that gave me a blindness to whatever potential might be there and I dismissed it rather than logging it to review at a later day and decide what the best conditions would be, what times of the year to go and what time of day would be best. I mean I've had some success, but I can probably count them on one hand, which isn't a great rate of success to be honest. I think this is an area where I've identified a definite need for some guidance.

My favourite lake Stuart, which I only get the opportunity to visit occasionally. You’re so lucky to have it close to you. What a cracking day. I loved the back lighting on The Screes. Did you take a look with the long lens? Scafells looked superb in he snow 😊
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Thanks Kev oh for sure having this so close is a blessing, to think before photography I'd barely even visited Wastwater lol I did take a few long lens shots on the details of the screes though the more interesting parts of that fell are probably better shot from further back up the lake, if I had a 100-400 that would have been just the job from where I was stood, think I'll deffo be investing in the Z version when it's released

Refreshing cheery vlog in beautiful Wastwater. I like the honest way you are happy to feature your “ rookie errors” , it’s a great way to teach I think. And I totally agree with your unpretentious “ photograph what works for you” advice.

Conditions are ok when you live there mate and you get the week to go out. When you only get a weekend and the weather is what it is you don't get to pick. Plus we can't drive anywhere at the moment so it looks like your lucky that way as well driving ten minutes to get to that amazing place lol
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Well I’m certainly fortunate to live here and be so close that I don’t have to travel much that’s for sure (but then I’ve never suggested anything else), but it’s not fortunate that I do it for a living, a huge amount of graft, skill and personal sacrifice has meant I can do this for a living successfully. I ‘get the week’ because of that.
@paulcomptonpdphotography
@paulcomptonpdphotography 3 года назад
We are not aloud to drive at all here police stopping cars 🙄 its got yo be hard full time but at least you get the chance to balance your going out days 👍 I thought about it many times just can't take the risk just now.

Nice images Stuart and it looks like you had a couple fab days weather wise. You're right about photo snobs. I'd say two things - Firstly you should take photographs for yourself, that you enjoy. Secondly, Joe public like photographs that mean something to them such as "ah yes that reminds me of my visit to Wast Water". They are not interested in the technical side or if the location has been done to death. Will check out your newsletter. Cheers.
@StuartMcGlennon

Beautiful colors in this opening drone footage. Was this straight out of the dji pocket 2 or Air2? Or did post help? I’m in the market for a simple drone so just wondering/recommendations for a new user. Oh, and looking forward to the newsletter.
@StuartMcGlennon
@StuartMcGlennon 3 года назад
Thanks the footage from the drone is pretty much out of the camera in terms of colours using the HDR mode, just had to bring highlights back a touch. The pocket 2 any bits to camera are untouched - you can of course grade both from a d-cinelike or flat setting though I’ve found especially with the drone the HDR mode does a great job you’ve just got make sure WB is set manually and not auto. The pocket 2 for pieces to camera is fine on auto though can be a tad oversharpened out of the camera.
