Solo hiking in nature gives one time to reflect while admiring wildlife and wildflowers along the trail. Shannon and I celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary in Port Stanley, Ontario. Take a tour of Port Stanley. Then later, a tribute from Birdwatching Bill (my Dad) about my Mom, who passed away 4 years ago. Being in nature can be healing.
Sightings along the way include Eastern Cottontail, Northern Cardinals, Brown-head Cowbirds, Trilliums, Yellow Trout Lilies.
Find out how Brown-head Cowbird young are raised.

That was a difficult video to make with those beautiful memories of my dear Mom, but also good to see them again. It's been so hard for my Dad having lost her. I'm glad you found that kind of sharing to be meaningful.

Lovely way to spend your wedding anniversary. I agree, nature is very healing. So many of us lost love ones during the pandemic and didn't have a chance to grieve properly while we all waded thru the mess around the world. Have a great week.

Wow, what a wonderful video this is! You captured some beautiful nature scenes as she is waking up from the winter months. Port Stanley looks like such a cozy little town. Congratulations, Kathleen and Shannon, on your 10th Anniversary. As always, the music selections are perfect :) What precious memories of your Mom and to hear from your Dad about their marriage from his perspective. My wife and I just celebrated our 51st Anniversary this past Sunday. Blessings!

I really enjoyed this one. I always like seeing the birds. Happy Anniversary. I also appreciated how you touched on some difficult topics that so many of us go through as our parents and loved one's age. Nature really can be healing and it just can do wonders to get outside.

Thank you for the anniversary wishes! Yes, touching on these difficult topics is where I hope that it provides ideas or possible strategies to help others in ways that nature's healing has helped me. What a difficult journey it can be watching and supporting parents through their decline, but also a gift - a gift to give back to them at a time of need. Thanks so much for watching.

We lost our husband/Dad 3 years ago and I hear the love and loss in your Dad's voice as I hear the same from my Mom. Please thank your Dad for sharing.

Hi Kathleen. I just wanted to say how very much I appreciated this video. It was very moving, and it took some courage to discuss your personal life in this way. I am sure that many of us share in these kinds of experiences and your thoughts would resonate deeply. Happy Anniversary! And, BTW, I particularly enjoyed the clip of the song Sparrow feeding the cowbird! It was awesome.

John, what a delight to have you watching our videos. Thank you for your kind comments and your support. I loved that cowbird clip too and was lucky that I happened to hear the young cowbird begging for food and recall being so surprised at the size difference with its "parent". Thanks for watching.

Kathleen 😭 This was an emotional but such a beautiful and inspirational watch 💚 Absolutely loved your anniversary hike and celebrations. What a lovely place you chose to spend it. Looks like such a nice town to explore and surrounded by some gorgeous wooded areas with lots of amazing nature finds. Your Cowbird is very similar to the Cuckoo here in the UK. It's quite surreal to see our small Meadow Pipits feeding and raising the much bigger juvenile Cuckoos. Often they have to hop up on to their back to actually get the food into their mouths. It's so interesting and fun to watch 😁 When you said that part about Shannon being away enjoying an audio book and drinking tea, Michelle turned to me and said "I am Shannon" 🤣😍 As much as we love walking together, I do also enjoy my solo nature hikes like you do. Your wedding photos brought a tear to my eye. What a beautiful day. Happy Anniversary to you both 😍😍😍 Part two of this video was a really beautiful tribute to your mother. Listening to you and Birdwatching Bill talk about her had us both in tears. She sounded so wonderful and it was so lovely to see those photographs of her at various stages of her life 💚 But you gave us the most wonderful end to the video with that footage of you offering Bill a boost up into the car seat and him telling you off 😂😍 and those beautiful family videos. Gave us some happy tears 😍💚 Nature is the most wonderful healer 💚💚💚 xxx

John, thank you for your many comments and kind feedback. Michelle, Shannon laughed at having a kindred spirit in you. She actually mentioned that when John shared some of your travels plan next month, mentioning your interest in locating coffee shops along the way...yes, she'd be right there with you on that! It means a lot to know how touched you were with the content of this video, as the topics were very meaningful to me. Birdwatching Bill, always wanting to be independent...haha...even at 97! Thanks so much for watching and for your meaningful feedback.

Dear Kathleen, thank you so much for making this video. I live on the south coast of the UK and absolutely love nature, so much so that I've turned my garden into a little woodland. In my ignorance, fed by somewhat stereo-typed images of life in the US, I had not realised that it was possible to go on woodland walks such as you have filmed here. I have watched your video in the early evening having spent a few hours today with my 97 year old Mum in the care home where she has lived for the last 3 years. I believe she is close to death and I know well about the grief you feel even though your loved one is still alive. I am an only child, perhaps you are too. I found it comforting to watch somebody who knows what I am going through and what I am feeling. I too am married. My husband is loving and supportive but unless you have experienced watching your beloved parent disintegrate in front of your eyes you can't fully understand. For sure when my Mum does pass I will go for a long walk in the hills above the town where I live and hope to see this year's swallows and hear the skylarks singing. Congratulations on your ten year's anniversary. May you have very many happy years together ahead of you. May God bless you and keep you both. Sally

Dear Sally, thank you for writing. I'm so sorry for what you are now experiencing. It's such a difficult stage in life to watch and comfort your Mom as she continues to decline. I do understand. I'm not an only child but had a very special relationship with my Mom that left me experiencing her decline and subsequent passing as though I were, aside from the wonderful support of my wife Shannon. I hope that nature provides you with some comfort as your focus shifts to the beauty and sounds around you, allowing for a short escape from the reality and sadness of your situation. Nature has really helped to comfort me. My Mom and I went to the UK in 2011 and had a wonderful vacation in London then in Paris. I treasure those memories and the videos and photos I took of our time together. Thank you for writing Sally. Your note meant a lot. As an aside, I watched this video with my Dad in his retirement home, a couple of days ago...and seeing some of those photos and videos of my Mom meant a lot to both of us.

@@HikingWithKathleen Dear Kathleen, thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to send me such a lovely response to my comment - it's good to be heard. I'm writing this having spent some time in my woodland garden, sitting in the sun which has finally arrived from its winter vacation, and this has had a very calming effect. Shame we live so far apart, otherwise would love to have met you in person. Glad you enjoyed your time in the UK. Wishing you both all the best that life and nature can bring. Sally x
