I've had my abdomen cut open and pieces of my guts removed twice now. I wear a belt because if I lift heavy without one it feels like my abdominal wall is going to rip open. I can still lift heavy objects weighing more than a hundred pounds at work though. Its almost like lifting maximal weights with a belt still improves your ability to lift submaximal weights without one.

this is actually really stupid rationale they use, if i want to lift heavier weights i would also use a full body compression suit, i would also use peds... it shows a lack of empathy and critical thinking the way this is answered.
@Steve-dv4hy
@Steve-dv4hy 3 года назад
I've thought about this a bit, for aids in general. I think if the equipment is helping you transfer the force you're generating into the bar, it's fine. By stabilizing your trunk, the belt helps transfer the force your legs are generating up to the bar. If the equipment is generating its own force, like a bench suit's elasticity or knee wraps, the extra weight on the bar isn't being moved by you. It's being moved by the equipment.
@jotr.9786
@jotr.9786 3 года назад
that's the difference between being strong to lift 200lbs and needing equipment to lift 200lbs. roids is a different story all together.

Rippetoe is sometimes/often a complete idiot
@someoldcliche
@someoldcliche 3 года назад
To expand upon Rip's thinking here: belts are not a "cheat". When using a belt to lift, you are still lifting entirely via your own power. Pretty much all the belt does is give your abdominals something to push back against, which is why it helps you lift more. The more you lift, the stronger you get. Therefore, to put it simply, waiting to use a belt until you are stronger is counterproductive since you would already be stronger if you were using a belt to train with heavier weights than you would otherwise be able to lift. That is the gap in the letter writer's logic that Rip is pointing out. Full body compression suits are not like a belt. Unlike a belt, they generate their own force across several joints, which means your muscles don't have to work as hard to lift a certain amount of weight on the bar. For example, let's say you have 315 on the bar with a suit. Your muscles are lifting less than that 315 because the suit is doing work on its own. This is the opposite of what a belt does, which is allowing your body to more effectively utilize its own force to lift more weight without any joint overlap/support. While Rip is not known for his empathy, his critical thinking on this topic is very sound and I can attest to its accuracy based on my own personal lifting experience. Buy a belt.
@temperedwell6295
@temperedwell6295 3 года назад
@@someoldcliche Expanding on a stupid thought doesn't make that thought any more intelligent. Without expanding on why Rippetoe is quite an idiot here, I will say the following. At any activity, you are only as good as your weakest link. So if your ''core'' or grip, or any other factor involved in the lift isn't strong enough for you to lift a weight without it being supported, you are too weak to lift the weight. Who cares if your strong links are getting stronger while your weak links are being supported? Your weak links aren't getting stronger, so you aren't any stronger. In fact, you only increase the disparity between your weak links and strong links, thus increasing your chance of injury outside of the gym. I lift almost exclusively without a belt, using a belt only when I go very heavy (for me) or if my back is feeling a bit tender., and I, with a body type very poorly suited for weightlifting, squat exclusively high bar. I don't care if my numbers aren't huge. I have good strength for other activities in life and, unlike Rippetoe, don't have a litany of injuries.

I'm not a fan of lifting aides. If I'm out and about and need to lift something, I cant just ask the universe to "let me run home and grab a belt". I like functional training. Don't want to get used to belts, sleeves, or wraps, or ......I also like 100% raw lifting because the thought of using aides makes me feel disgusted.

@PaulsChannel779
@PaulsChannel779 3 года назад
If you re going that heavy for a max straps would be a good option and not mixed grip - you know like all the strong men do in comps...no one is regularly lifting 800 to worry about tearing a bicep. IF you are actively flexing your tricep and deadlifting properly you wont tear your bicep with a mixed grip.

Why doesn't Starting Strength like the trap bar deadlift even though it can potentially make people stronger by allowing them to lift more weight? Because the trap bar deadlift doesn't require coaching so Starting Strength coaches can't make money off of it. Why does Starting Strength have a favorable view of wearing lifting belts even though the goal is to make people stronger for every day activities when almost no one wears a belt outside of the gym? Because Starting Strength has its own line of belts that sell for $100 so this is something they CAN make money on.

Pretending you are stronger when you have to reinforce the very areas of the body that transmit the force of the load so you can appear to lift heavier weight for your ego is stupid.
@lfsiuvagacwoi
@lfsiuvagacwoi 3 года назад
Think of it this way: when you use a belt, or switch your grip, all you’re doing is removing a weak link so you can overload the other components of the lift more. If you can squat 50lbs more with a belt, that means your legs can work that much harder
@yew2oob954
@yew2oob954 3 года назад
@@lfsiuvagacwoi Why do you lift weights? To strengthen the "weak links" by hiding them you have changed from strength training to ego lifting. If your GRIP is failing the REFLEX from your lower back is to DROP the weight. What do you think that means? If you are going to strengthen the body then strengthen the body. If you are going to modify the body to lift more weight then you are in effect bodybuilding because ONE part of your body continues to grow and get stronger while another part lags behind.
@thealleycats375
@thealleycats375 3 года назад
Proper utilisation of the belt increases the the strength of the area that's weak. The more you train to lift with the belt the more you can lift beltless. Similarly to the deadlift, your grip is still trained using the hook, alt and even straps and the stronger they get the stronger.your DOH will also get.
@yew2oob954
@yew2oob954 3 года назад
@@thealleycats375 Nope, you will NOT be stronger on a beltless lift because you used a belt. That is a lie. Also, don't use straps. Your grip and lower back are literally the limiting factor and what you should strengthen and use as a guide to what you can actually lift. When you don't you are literally running the risk of hurting your lower back in real life when trying to actually use your hard earned strength. The belt and straps are giving you a false proprioception of what actually lifting something feels like.
