Some of the simplest mods to gain off-road performance include a suspension lift and bigger tires. But a significant drawback of installing these components is a loss of power and overall agility of the vehicle. One way to gain some of that power back, and bring the drivability closer to a stock feel is by regearin the differentials.
In this episode of Chasing Dust, the DesertChief is talking all about gears! Starting with an introduction to the topic, Matt walks us through the basic components of a differential, and how they work together to propel your truck or SUV forward. Unlike the axle shafts, traction devices, and carrier, the ring and pinion is what dictates the rate at which a vehicle moves down the road, and that's what is changed when regearing your truck.
Matt dives into why people regear their trucks, and the benefits that can be had by doing so. Giving examples of regearing a Tacoma after installing 33" tires, Matt talks about the differences you can expect while traveling both on the street and highway. And while there are many benefits to regearing, there can be some unintended effects as well.
To wrap things up, Matt helps you determine if regearing is necessary for your rig. If regearing your vehicle is something you'd like to consider, Matt even gives you an incredible resource to calculate the best gear ratio for the tires you're running and the kind of driving you do.
We all know the snowball effect of building an off-road capable rig, and how important it is to find solutions to make your truck work best for you. We hope this regearing guide helps you make a more informed decision about the gear ratio in your truck, Jeep, or SUV.

this is the best info on regearing i've found on the YT. I'm regearing my '20 Tacoma from 4.30 (MT) to 4.88 next month. went from 31" tires to 33". Thanks for all the info

Have you done regear your Taco yet? How about it? Mine is 2020 too.
@commonintel

@@khanhtrunglam8724 I like it but the benefits were lower than expected for me because my truck is a manual and the gear ratio on manual Tacomas are already at 4.30 as opposed to automatic Tacomas which come in 3.73 gear ratio. Everything he said was correct. My MPGs in the city improved by 1mpg and my mpg on the freeway worsened by 1-2mpg depending on how fast I'm going. I like the power it's added to my truck but I don't feel I really needed it since I don't plan on takaing it off-roading much in it's first few years while it's still new and sexy. I have taken it on mild trails and I can definitely feel the power although it's not as big of an improvement from 4.30 to 4.88 as it would be for automatics (3.73 to 4.88 or even 5.29). I think I was good at 4.30. I still have my stock gears so idk, maybe I'll end up going back to 4.30 and sell the 4.88s. Are you planning on getting your Taco regeared? What shop? If you're in SoCal, I recommend Premier West Gears in Riverside. Good Luck.

Just had 5.29 Nitro Gears installed on my 2019 Tundra. It has a 2.5” lift and running 35” tires. Was very tired of feeling like I was constantly hauling around a trailer because of the weight & size of the tires. I almost went back to stock size but ended up having the gears installed and so glad I did. Now it feels like it did the day I bought. Holds 6th gear like it never did before. I can tell by the exhaust note that the engine isn’t struggling like it did before and always changing gears. If you plan on keeping your tundra and you’re running larger tires, do yourself a favor and go for it. Almost like getting a new truck all over again, way more fun to drive.

I really appreciate the vid. It looks like the rear differential on my 2011 4Runner with 34s may have failed last week. I was planning to live with stock gearing, because I spent too much on suspension. Now, I’m pulling the differential anyway, so I may go for it while I’m making repairs.

Love the video!!! Although I learned a lot my basic question is if I don't regear will anything actually break ? I don't do any off road she is basically for the " look" she's a 2017 silverado and I've heard about potential transmission issues and the 4to 8 cylinder switching stupid feature.

Re gearing helps with getting the speedometer and mpg calculators on vehicles back close, it just depends on how close your gear ratio and tire size ends up being to sock. I have. 2005 chevy that had 3.73 and I put 4.10 in it because I found a junk yard front end that had 4.10 in it so I re geared the back. Running a 35 it brought everything back where it needed to be the speedo can’t get any closer at 65 mph. Still wish I would have went with 4.56s tho.

am hella confused so on my 2019 f150 3.5 10 speed my current ratio is 3.31 if i go 3.73 it will be close to even number but if i go 3.55 my speed say will be 75 mph at 1650 rpm on 10th gear vs 70 at 1650rpm on 3.31 so it will more efficient then meaning it will have more power at lower rpm? since i am looking at gear ratio upgrades

Matt, thank you for your video. For a 2022 Toyota Tacoma Limited 4x4 and I mostly drive on highway with stock tires, is it beneficial to regear the truck to 4.88 with nitro gear package? I have watched several nitro gear videos and it seems that regearing makes the truck more drivable. I am not towing or hauling or adding more weight to the truck. Just use it for a daily driver and long distance driver. Please advise! Thank you in advance for your help!
@user-qb2vt1uo8g
@user-qb2vt1uo8g Год назад
Well, according to the video, re-gearing only makes sense for city driving and long distance will decrease your mpg. So, sorry buddy sounds like you might as well save the money.

Does anyone know if it is possible to re gear my 2011 Nissan frontier 4 cylinder because i already have 410 gears and i can not town a trailer 3000lb heavy because if i stop on a moderate hill i literally have to rev my engine to 3500RPM and burn my clutch 2 times because it will stall my engine if i don't press the clutch 2nd time to boost the engine speed. The 1st gear in these has not enough deep gears and i wish i had a granny gear. 410s are already high, is it possible to fit higher ratio gears in the Nissan frontier differentials ? Or should i get a tune for my engine?

Awesome info on rearing . I have a 2016 Tacoma TRD. I would like to regear, but I'm limitit in the area I live, to get this job done professionally. I was told by a friend that I could order online complete front and rear diffs, and I could save money and do the removal and installation myself, then send them my diffs for core credit? Any if on this would help Thanks and and love your channel.

I don’t do any soeacial off road or any crazy just my daily driving to work or long drives in highway. Thanks in advance.

I'm considering lifting my 2014 Ram 1500 rwd and either 35's or 37" tires I'm currently at stock 275/60/20 and i have the AlphaOBD MX to change tire size , tire pressure, tranny shift points my question is will i still need to do a regear as well

Yes, take it all into account. As soon as I lifted my truck 6” and putting 35’s on (wish I went 37’s) my transmission just took a shit had to get it rebuilt then I actually regeared the truck

I have grand jeep cherokee 1995 limited 4.0 zj i wanted to go from stock size 225/75/15 to some 31's. I've already lifted the jeep 3.5 inch spent over 4,000 in parts and labor now if i want new tires its suggested to get offset rimes and bigger tires. New tires and rims are gonna cost over 3 grand and regearing 2 grand also shop suggested a slip yolk eliminator another 1,500. That's over 10 grand making my head spin 🤕

With all this talking, didn't differentiate specifically why the "low gear" mechanically works, like the demonstration was intended to breakdown diameter of tire travel distance. This is another, as are seemingly 90% of video producers, example of why you shouldn't just wing it when discussing things. Be methodical and make sure you say what you need to to properly inform while not chattering and spazng on unimportant points or talking in circles and end up leaving out elementary points and being inconsistent with the whole production of content.
@Jay-rg5mt
@Jay-rg5mt Год назад
Bruh if you’re considering regearing and don’t understand the basic principal of why a low gear gives power back then you shouldn’t even be modding your truck
@HTSS8
@HTSS8 Год назад
@Jay-rg5mt clearly you're not reading the context of what I said. It's not that I don't understand, it's that the supposed intent to inform on the subject was incompletely informative. But it's clear you're trying to grandstand that You know about "modifying" trucks, huh?
