Are there diminishing results with people over 50,60,70 yrs of age? Also what percentage of patients actually experience not only a stopping of cartilage deterioration but also see an increase in cartilage growth?

Hi! There is diminishing results usually when the disease is too advanced, age could factor in but is usually the grade of osteoarthritis which a more important determinant. The ideal scenario is to do it as soon as posible. On long-term studies, almost all patients experience a stop in deteriorating cartilage and more cartilage thickness. The amount it thickens or how long it lasts is what is a delicate subject. The more advanced the disease the least the effects are going to last.

@@RMI.Health I have had pretty severe cartilage damage when I was in my thirties, I severed my ACL and recked the knee really bad, I was told I lost 80% of my cartilage….I’m now in my early 60’s and I’m considering a knee replacement. Do I sound like a good candidate or am I better off with a replacement?

Hi! Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses the patient’s own blood cells to promote healing. Stem Cell therapies, on the other hand, use Mesenchymal Stem Cells, which can be sourced from umbilical cord tissues or previously collected from the patient’s body. PRP therapy uses the platelets found in blood, a type of blood cell that plays an essential role in clotting and healing, which contains up to 12 growth factors and a minimal amount of stem cells. In contrast, Stem Cell therapies using Mesenchymal Stem Cells can contain over 80 growth factors and many more biological elements.

Unfortunately, after knee replacement our treatment won't help, the idea of this treatment is to try to avoid for as Long as possible these types of definitive surgeries.

Stem cell therapy will not work on a plastic or metal device inside your body. You may have other options but you'll have to research that yourself as it is personal to your own knee health history, current health, etc. Google and save as much as you can, THEN contact the office of the surgeon who performed the replacement, get 2nd and 3rd opinions if you feel it's helpful or necessary. I've learned that my surgeons either haven't known much, or don't want to send their patients elsewhere and lose money, about alternatives outside of their own practices. None of the 4 surgeons who performed my stage 4 arthritis surgeries EVER mentioned stem cell therapy. And I had to ask about PRP, which was an option at the same facility, but never mentioned by my doctors or the surgeon.
