Thank you! One of my young music students (age 12) has written 7 reggae songs, and performs out at local bars and restaurants (covers & originals). I’ll be accompanying him on Keys at our next show. Thanks for helping me learn this style of music so I can support him. Having a lot of fun learning reggae. 😁
Thanks a lot for this great tutorial. There is a lot to learn with this video. As soon as I finish my track I'd like to share it with you to show you what I have learned.
reggae keyboard skank, strum or bang got so much different techniques, swing notes, riddim groove that can alter the bang sound making multiply fascinating groove. bubbling also has so many techniques and sounds. enjoy and rock out everyone! peace and love from URIJAH BAND from the Caribbean. My advice is a lot of musicians all do the same sounds they hear from reggae or dancehall music that was invented by our legends. All thanks, respect and love to them since we have copied them or a more polite word followed or immolated them which is cool. Once you learn those foundation sounds, he's doing on this channel, take it to the next level and be creative and inventive. Greatness comes from being original and inventive, REMEMBER THIS, One love to all.
Dude, thank you so much, I started from scratch a few months ago and I feel like I am getting a professional reggae production bootcamp just by watching your videos. So grateful thank you.
would love to see another mix down of a track from start to finish. where we boost and cut the bass , where we boost and cut the kick, reverb and the full works....thanks again
Reggae comes with a feel yuh nuh aka (you know) as Bob would say. Im from St. CATHERINE JAMAICA WEST INDIES. IM NOW HERE IN THE USA 43 YRS AND IM A RANGLIN YES DANA RANGLIN IS MY NAME AND ERNEST RANGLIN THE GUITARIST FROM🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲 I LEARNED FROM. I PLAY DRUMS,BASS,RYTHEM AND LEAD GUITAR,HAMMOND ORGAN AND KEYBOARDS PIANO ETC. PLUS I SING TOO.
Another really helpful video dude! Big up for making these. Can you do a lesson on repeater drumming? Also would love to hear your thoughts on the songwriting side, how to structure things out in a way that keeps things fresh and interesting. Techniques to mix up the tune like going into a ragga style, stabs etc
Great video and many thanks for sharing your knowledge. Here's one that i'm having trouble with though. When using three horns together for an intro or chorus riff, how are they layered? Does the trumpet play the root with the sax and trombone playing third and fifth? I want to get close to an authentic sounding horn section but it often sounds bad. Any chance of a vid to explain it?
Phil Buckthorpe thanks for the question! I have played around with this a lot. The issue is that horns generally sound unrealistic. It’s very hard to get good horn sounds. My best attempts have been with a trombone playing the root, a trumpet playing the third and another trumpet playing the fifth of the melody. Altos just sound too fake although they would be the actual horn used in the trio. There are no rules though, sometimes I’ve used the trombone as the third or fifth. I would say make copies of the midi notes and move them around until you get the best combination. You may need to play with octaves as trombones are obviously lower by nature. Something cool to try is on a song with 7ths, try using four horns, one on the 7th harmony. Can be fun. I’d love to do a video but honestly it’s still a struggle to get good horns. Experimentation is the key! Cheers and thanks for stopping by
@@DMKahn Many thanks for that, much appreciated. I've watched countless reggae gigs on youtube trying to figure out what the brass is doing but its hard to tell them apart and like you say, convincing horn patches are hard to come by. I will have a go with what you suggested here, it'll be fun to experiment. Keep up the good work, I'm inspired by the reggae you are creating. Peace.
Howdy, your videos are awesome! Learning a lot since I subbed a few days ago. Can you do a tutorial on mixing reggae keyboards (piano, bubble organ) with the rest of the track? Thanks
@@DMKahn with mastering what to keep an eye out for when you mixed the song like it's supposed to be mixed. So after the mixing vid, you could make a mastering vid giving tips to what to look out for, maybe effects or tricks for punch, vocals above the music, using compressor or when not to use it, getting it to pro level sounding levels etc. Maybe a B or never made the cut song of yours that you mixed and take us with you in that last step to finish the song? Thanks
hi DM kahn, how are you? we are "chocolate factory" a reggae band from philippines. we always watch your video and continue learning from the staff that you're teaching :) can we ask something ? like if we want you to mixing and finalizing our originals.. how much it will cost? or can you please give us your email address? thank you..
How bout some tutorials on DUB techniques when it comes to mixing and what kind of ear to have when approaching dub. In particular maybe some tutorials on what plugins (logic stock if possible) for verbs and delays, parameters and automation tips, etc. bless up!
If you’re the only keyboard player, can you use an arpeggiator to handle the vamps (default reggae rhythm) ? So you can maybe hold down chords or lay down a solo ?
@@DMKahn it’s for a live gig. Usually 2 keyboardists. One does the vamps and the other does synths, brass, solos etc. but this time I’ll be playing alone. Only asking for workaround if you’ve got some. Thanks.
Yes, it will sound the best of all are synchronized. It doesn’t have to be perfect but close to sound tight. The sound of the piano and guitar at the same time is what makes the reggae chop sound
Hi there, I have a logic file that I include with my sample pack, samples are $50US, email me thekahn@gmail.com (careful spelling K A H N) for details, bless
Vineet Kaul Thanks!. Please send me an email to Thekahn@gmail.com and we can link up about whatever tracks you need. I can do a per-track price or a bulk price if you need different elements/instruments for a song. Bless!
It takes a lot of tweaking. Try playing with the pick up position and the different brightness settings. Best of luck. Also adding some clipping/saturation will help
How to do the piano rhythm when the guitars are playing the pattern already? I saw Reggae bands where 2 guitars and piano are playing the same rhythm. Sound monotonous. Even the swinging of the arms as they strum the guitar is the same as the piano player.
I’m not sure if you know this, but the signature sound you hear in a lot of reggae is the sound of the piano and the guitar playing at the same time. It’s literally part of what makes reggae reggae. It’s the combination of two simple things to make a complex sound. You say monotonous, I say magical 😏
