I got my first over 20 years ago in part to get over my arachnophobia. I'm in Connecticut, so we get the hot, humid summers and cold winters as well. So, anything I keep would work for you. Have you seen my video on beginner species? I would recommend the Mexican redknee (Brachypelma hamorii) or Brachypelma auratum (a little harder to find). Hello, Lou...welcome back! :) So glad to hear that the wife has softened her stance a bit. I talk to a lot of guys who are desperately trying to convince the Missus to let them have some. The answer is...I've done that before. haha. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I stopped doing it that way because I've had the substrate (especially if it's moist) clump up and fall, hitting and startling the T. That sent it bolting. I try my best to keep them calm at all times, I have a better, more predictable transfer if I coax them out. I find it easier to control where they are going and minimize mistakes. These are just the methods I use, and they work for me. I encourage folks to use whatever technique works for them. :) Thanks again for commenting!!! - Tom

I was afraid of ALL of them. Hahaha. It didn't matter how small (although large ones were particularly terrifying/fascinating). I never killed them, as I always found them so interesting, but they would freak me the heck out. We used to move them to the basement using a cup and a piece of paper when we found them in the house. If you spend enough time caring for one and observing it, it really does help start to make them less scary. It DOES take time to get over it, though. :) If you've already got the tattoo of one, then you HAVE to get over your fear soon. ;)

First off, Mary, I'm so sorry for the delay in responding. I just found a bunch of comments that I missed! Thank you so very much! And I've often thought about that, and I'm honestly not sure. It seems the ones from more hospitable and tropical places (where there is more consistently warm temps and where food is in abundance) grow much more quickly than those from arid and less hospitable regions. Perhaps the slower growing ones have evolved to have slower metabolisms due to their harsh environments?

A little spray around the edges does a good job with slowing them down, too. :) Yeah, the tub works great for some people, and it's definitely safe. It just hurts my knees and I feel like I'm limited with my movement. Plus, the videos wouldn't be nearly as pretty. haha

Unless there is something heavy above them (like a large rock or heavy dish), they are in no danger if the tunnels collapse. They will just dig themselves out. Also, they reinforce their dens with webbing, which helps to hold things together.

If you're looking for old word, you can't go wrong with the C. lividus or H. gigas...or even the P. muticus. Heck, or any Chilobrachys species. haha This is a difficult question!

Hi, Kevin! I like to go from the top in case they bolt, but it all comes down to personal preference. If she kicks and you're coming from the top, it will protect you better from the hairs, too.

Hello, Shogun! Thank you so much! Yes, you can keep them in there until they hit 2-4" inches or so (depending on the species). If it's a slow growing species, like Brachypelma, Aphonopelma, or Grammostola, I usually move mine at around the 2" mark. Hope that helps!

I just got home from the expo and ended up with an a.geniculata and a c.cyaneopubescens. Both are a nice size. Maybe an inch and a half or 2 inches.

Hello! Some burrow and some don't. I usually give them deep, moist sub to start and see if they decide to burrow. Neither of mine use their hides right now and are usually right out in the open.

Hello, Kristian...great question. Actually, they're not. There is this myth that the T. blondi is so much larger, and part of that is because it was the first real "giant" spider everyone talked about. The T. stirmi can get just as large and looks nearly identical to the blondi. In fact MANY people trying to buy a blondi end up with a stirmi and don't recognize the difference. The T. stirmi is also much less expensive and has proven to be more hardy in captivity than the blondi. You are basically getting an identical spider that is easier to keep an for much less money.

ok, thx alot for the answer :) I had just always heard it was bigger but thx for explaining that there is no difference in size :) Today I am going to unbox my 7 new m.balfouris and put them in :) and tonight it will be the h.pulchripes :) looking alot of videos on how to do it the easiest mainly because the balfouris are in seperate vials. they were fed 2 days before shipping to make sure they can go 5 days to settle in before I feed. was told to give them some days alone to avoid a bolting. I am just nervous on how to get all of them in the vivarium one by one without one escaping. the first one I got was NOT calm. came calmly out of the vial and then started circling the glas. I did start a dubia colony, a hysser colony and a cricket colony. also have meal worms and grasshoppers to vary their diet. Now i have 8 fossorials and a terrestrial so I am looking for my final T for now and thats going to be an arboreal, hoping a c.versicolor sling. I dont feel anywhere near ready for a pokie. yes I know i started with balfouris and now a pulchripes but pokies scare me with their speed and potency. so looking for a more "friendly" arboreal :) But again thx alot for clearing up the differences and why so many stirmis are in the hobby :)

No worries...a lot of folks think that. It's sad, really, because I think that the T. stirmi goes overlooked in some instances. Did you see my original housing video when I put the 9 balfouri slings in? Give them several hides and starter burrows to run into. If they run, they will often run to one of these and then relax.

That was the trick for me. If you give them some cork bark stacked and some starter burrows, they seem to bolt right for them. Actually, it worked pretty well for the rehouse as well! Good luck!
