Unironically, the Asuka plush looks too happy and Rei is more iconic than Shinji. With its cute neutral expression it stands as a contrast to the series itself, and being neutral means you can read any expression you want into it. Rei is drowning in a pool? Okay. She looks terrified... or is she just quietly accepting it....??? This just adds another layer of contrast to the plush itself with how dark the show it comes from is, which makes the joke work.
