Reading manga also lets you check out some really unique stories that are a bit too different from a lot of mainstream anime that are unlikely to get an anime adaption even if the stories are great. Rn I’m reading through Kaiju Girl Caramelise which is a romance story about a girl who turns into Godzilla whenever she gets flustered around her crush. When I read the Dragon Ball manga the whole "I'm going to destroy this planet in 5 minutes" thing Frieza does makes more sense because the book's actually paced with it in mind. Each shot is a freeze frame in manga, but because of the nature of anime, it can't be that there, but adaptations like DBZ try to show everything from the panels (and more to fill for time because of the continuous weekly schedule it was on). So a 5 minutes battle ends up taking 20 or so episodes. It's a good thing we don't have shows made like that as much now.

I really think My Hero season 5 is a good example of how adaptations, even if they’re good, can fall short of the manga. The seasons arcs are bogged down with flashbacks and filler, hurting the pace, and bones are forced to focus on movies as well as the main anime, which hurts the anime’s overall quality. The manga however, aside from Horikoshis gorgeous art, is paced fantastically (for the most part), and so arcs like MVA are given all the breathing room they need to be great rather than 6 episodes adapting 4 chapters each, while shorter arcs are not stretched out with unnecessary flashbacks and filler episodes.

@ab-hx2ii
@ab-hx2ii 3 года назад
@@REIwAlexY Not really. Some will never have an anime and the reason of that can be a combination of lots of things like not being popular at all, being a really old manga and not getting a chance to get an adaptation back in the day (especially when anime was a relatively new medium compared to manga some of those manga, mostly gekiga/seinen manga, didn't get adapted because of either anime not being fully adult stuff until some time back then or just budget issues since anime didn't have that sakuga level animation until 80s) and now being too late to get a new one especially if it's a manga that doesn't fit in to modern anime audience's taste, the controversial nature of the manga (i don't mean just gore and sex but also political reasons for example), simply being too complex and long to adapt, the art style of the manga either in terms of background art or character design being too detailed and realistic to adapt or just the mangaka not wanting an anime to happen lol. I mean some manga let alone being adapted don't even get translated fully. There are so many niche specific to japan's taste kind of manga that will never have a market here. Like there are even manga about the lives of japanese salarymen and business in general. I mean there is a reason people in japan prefer manga to anime. Only outside of japan majority people prefer anime to manga. Because manga actually can appeal to even a normal middle aged adult (this is why in japan adult people who read manga on trains are so common). While most anime are just made for teenagers or otakus. Not much actual adult watches them. Basically the catalogue and variety of manga is much richer in terms of appealing to an older demographic so reading manga is seen a bit more normal. Watching anime is still very much seen as an otaku only thing.

Nah, i feel like all stories can work in pretty much any medium. But that can on my be achieved when the adaption takes after the source material and takes FULL advantage of the medium its now currently being adapted into. Stuff like Invincible, the beetlejuice musical and one punch mans first season are all pretty great examples of this in action. Bleach’s anime…was definitely NOT one of these cases tho. While some of the anime definitely changed things for the better and for the sake of the actual story. Most of them were done for more “cosmetic” and “””economic””” reasons rather than artistic integrity or anything like that. Put anything under those circumstances regardless of the medium, it’ll fail all the same. The success of an adaption hinges less on the medium itself and more the right people, right time, right money, right circumstances etc. Stuff like DB or bleach weren’t just successful because of the stories, fights, characters and slick designs; it’s because their creators were genuine masters at the craft and would often FULLY take advantage of the medium of manga, all the way to the point where it became a unique and special experience all to its own. If you’re going to be adapting something into a new medium and will actively decide NOT to take advantage of the new medium its coming to like its creator did, than you might as well stop right where you are. As both an artist, storyteller but also manga reader, an underrated aspect is tend to hate about certain anime adaptions are the ones that literally just adapt the manga 1.1, just looking good and consistent all the way round. Nothing new added to better suit the new mediums, no improvements (if there were any necessary for the story to begin with) just nothing, just a regular adaption and nothing. The whole backbone of adapting an anime is supposed to be a huge ad for the og manga AND franchise, why would i want to watch something that’s EXACTLY like the books I already own and can see at anytime (and consume faster)??? Like you said, it honestly ESPECIALLY bites in stuff like bleachs case (though it definitely doesn’t fit the bill of an adaption the matches things 1.1). It stings when you KNOW the og creator took full advantage of the medium but the animated adaptation didn’t. I shouldn’t be getting the same experience from the book but on tv. I should be getting a new experience specifically special that could ONLY be delivered in the way that tv show can. It makes the viewing experience fun, (even if i already read the manga and know what’ll happen next) and all around still fresh and exciting. And also be a perfect motivator to getting me and others to check out the manga and see the differences. Its good from entertainment AND economic perspective. Shit like cromartie high is king of this. Deadass starts its first episode with the mc saying “if you wanna know how got into this situation, you’re literally gonna have to go read the manga” 💀 The search to actually finding and reading the manga to get the context of the opening (and entire series really) made the reveal a BILLION times sweeter vs if i was just spoonfed what happened in the anime’s adaption. It even became one of the fandoms best kept secrets too!!! Fans should be treating adapting a series 1.1 as the bare minimum; *NOT* the standard. Static pictures in a weekly comic book format for 12 year olds and primetime, moving images with audio are not and can never be the same or comparable in any way, so why try it at all? Why not take advantage of the specific strengths you have and seize them?

@@theradionicrevival8068 I feel that it's okay to add in little things to an anime but they should never change things. Unless it was broken all ready in the manga. I love to read. But the whole reason for watching something versus reading it is so that you can see it move and hear the sounds and not have to imagine it inside your head. Make it come alive. Track down individual volumes or watch episodes, hmm. Let's face it, there's a very simple reason why anime is more popular than manga in the west. Can't return to manga if you never started there. And I don't even like reading manga on the computer, official or not. When it comes to books, I'd prefer to have a physical copy in my hands. It's not practical in this instance.

Agreed. Basically most of the time best of what anime has to offer are anime original stuff (or sometimes novel adaptations, not LN btw just regular novels) and best of what manga has to offer are stuff that don't even have an anime or at least don't have a competent one that adapts the whole manga. Very few stuff like monster are good in both mediums (but still the manga is superior because the anime adaptation doesn't use anime medium to it's advantage and is just a copy paste of the manga albeit a very competent and faithfully done one, minus some of it's pacing issues compared to the manga).

Two things: 1: I would love to see a webcomic recommendation video from you, because webcomics have a lot of the bonuses you discussed here (as well as usually being free to read due to their format) but it's often an untapped market because you literally only have word of mouth to go on for finding webcomics and that can make great pieces go unnoticed simply because it hasn't been introduced to the people who would love it. 2: If you ever do decide to do a webcomic recommendation video and you haven't read "Stand Still Stay Silent" yet, read that first before doing the video. Based on your videos, especially your 'the problem with horror anime' video, it's practically tailor-made to your tastes in the thriller/horror genre.

We def underestimate the influence of music and VAing makes on our experience of any particular series. Manga may often have better pacing, art, flow, etc (ofc not always), but the fact that anime can appeal to 2 of our 5 senses instead of just 1 makes a very significant difference. Of course, this is all dependent on the team working on such anime, and the fact of the matter is that it’s much easier to get consistently good results out of one person than it is out of a group of people. BUT because of that, the potential for quality from a group can exceed the potential for quality by just one person, especially due to everyone being able to specialize in one part of the project rather than covering everything by a single individual.

Fun thing: the very reason why Dragon Ball, which initially struggled against the juggernaut of the 1980s that was Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star, introduced what could be considered the very first martial arts tournament of the world of shonen manga was that Kazuhiko Torishima, Toriyama's editor throughout the decade, suggested he shifted to something that could allow him to show off what he was best at: drawing three-dimensional scenes with an impressive degree of depth and immersion, to contrast with Tetsuo Hara's dynamic right-to-left but rather flat and still drawing and page-building style, and reading the first Tenkaichi Budokai arc, you can definitely see Toriyama's talent for portraying dynamic action in 2D, even with difficult angles and perspectives. I turned more towards manga because it doesn't look like Land of the Lustrous will ever get a season 2 and it really deserves it. The anime was beautiful and was faithful to the manga. I'm very happy I continued the story because the manga is amazing, even if the author's hiatus is killing me (no spoilers but the cliffhanger she's left the manga on is the single most heartbreaking thing I have ever read). I'm really glad overall that I've finally turned more towards manga. Toilet Bound Hanako-kun is fantastic and while I like the anime it skipped some crucial arcs and it doesn't look like it will ever get a second season. The Shadows House manga is SPECTACULAR (the anime was good but had an anime only arc so I'm nervous about how a second season would be handled) and Talentless Nana also doesn't seem like it will continue anime wise but the manga is entertaining. I'm really liking The Duke of Death and His Maid anime so I will read the manga eventually. At this point I'm using anime more as a vehicle to find manga. For some reason I can't find the entire Higurashi manga online for free though which sucks, I really don't want to shill out $230 to Amazon to get the full set.

Late to the party but I have a few thoughts on this as well. I don't think Manga is superior to Anime but the simple fact of the matter is that Anime is often a degraded copy of a Manga. The creator likely made all of there decision with the fact that it would be a Manga sitting at the back of their mind. Taking a story made for one medium and trying to adapt it into a new one will always degrade it. I feel like the only way to do this right is for the creator(s) of the original work to be skill in both Manga and Anime production and for them to basically make a new product based off of their original. All of this is to say, I want less adaptation and more anime originals SPECIFICALLY designed for the medium.

@@yunogasai1338 It's delightful so far, it puts me back in an old headspace that's kinda nostalgic and cute. Basically this average player on his school's badminton team falls in love with the star of the girl's basketball team, and due to circumstances she comes to live with him and his family while her family is outta the country. Ultimately the core of the manga so far is about how they learn to treat each other, how to navigate their living situation, and most importantly how they both motivate each other to improve in their fields with the mutual goal of making it to nationals this year in their sports. My initial fear after the first chapter would be that the protagonist would be too insufferable with his infatuation with a nice but blank slate girl, but after the first couple chapters I was pleasantly surprised at how genuine and earnest characters were while having other stuff going on in their lives aside from their romantic interest. Big recommend if you want something cute and sweet with a little bit of depth. There's only 16 chapters out right now so it's still super readable and easy to catch up on 👍
