The problem of skin colour in Indian film industry is so severe that if sometimes an actress is required to be of a darker complexion for a role, they cast the fairest actress and apply dark makeup on her to make her suitable for the role but they cannot cast an originally darker skinned girl… it’s just pathetic !

Indian woman are shamed for literally anything from when they're literally children. Skin color, weight, height, even the way you walk, you talk, you sit, you speak. Many woman even don't let their girls play out in the sun so their skin doesn't get dark. There's constant advertisement of skin lightening creams for years and years. Majority women have dark skin but light skin is literally worshipped. Rekha was one of the revolutionary actresses who was naturally dark skin. She isn't considerably over weight in the pictures showed here. But she probably doesn't have any pictures of that. There's so so so many bad things done to her my the entertainment industry. Colorism and bleaching are HORRIBLE in India. A lot of the bleaching products sold in my country are Indian products. Watching Bollywood you would never know that there are Indians as dark in a lot cases darker than black people. When watching a musical number in some Bollywood movies pay attention you might catch a glimpse of dark-skinned Indians in the background sometimes. There are tribes in India that literally are descendants of Africans.

@deniseb.4656 3 года назад
I don't get it either. As a western light-skinned person I have to say that blemishes/redness/acne are more visible on light skin than on darker complexions. So I don't get it why some people think it's more beautiful.
@mariavictoriasalita2908
@mariavictoriasalita2908 3 года назад
@@deniseb.4656 because in the old days when people do hard labor like plow the fields for example or fish in the sea, they are exposed in the heat of the sun which would result to darkening of the skin. Middle class and wealthy people on the other hand don't need to undergo hard labor which leaves their skins to be unburned by the sun and if they go out, their veins are visible and bluish in color, that is why there is a term called blue-blooded. Therefore, dark skin is always associated with being born in poverty and the lowest castes, while being fair skinned is synonymous with being of upper caste or socio-economic status.
@deniseb.4656

@@mariavictoriasalita2908: I know of these origins and it used to be the same in western countries...but centuries ago! The standard has changed in western countries but it hasn't in many parts of Asia. However people from Asia (not only India but also Korea and Vietnam or Japan) claim the reason is because light skin looks "prettier" and more youthful on people and that light faces look more flawless. I can confirm that this isn't the case so I don't understand why they keep on claiming these things.

There are many good-looking people who are not fair skinned like Lupita Nyong-o, Denzel Washington, Ha Ji-won, Jamie Foxx, Diana Ross, Will Smith, Marlon and Shaun Wayans, Oprah Winfrey, Nandita Das, Siddharth Narayan, etc.

I'm not Indian, but I'm South Asian. And we have more or less the same beauty standards as India, so I think I can explain the whole thing about being 'dusky' and 'dark'. Here is the thing, South Asia has people whose skin is as white as some the people in Europe, and also people as dark as black people. And every shade in between. But things like colonialism has made the lighter skin the standard. So there are lots of whitening products being promoted through the South Asia, some of them even contain things like bleach and people still use it bc they want to fit into these Eurocentric beauty standards. This is why most of the Asians portrayed in popular media are lightskinned. And bc of this, lots of foreigners expect all of us to be that way too. My cousin who lives in UK always gets asked if she's black and when she says she's not, people are like ' you're lying" bc the beauty standards have normalized light skin so much. I was born a light skin Asian and so was my first brother. But my second brother happened to be a dark skinned Asian. Bc of this extended family gatherings were hell for him, where relatives make comments about him, comparing his to our lightskin and my grandparents even favored the two us over him just bc we were lightskin. So yeah.... That's the situation.

a.d. W ~ As one that has Indian friends I can tell you they take it far. I thought African Americans are off the hook with that "ish", Oh No!!! they take the stupidity to a whole different level... You are so right !!! Lupita Nyongo, Naomi Campbell absolutely beautiful. I am light-skinned and just today I was complaining ( over a trillion times in my life) about the lack of melanin in my skin..SMH.

I would say if we made a graph of all the skin tones within the races, the middle for Indians is lighter in the middle for black people, but there's the range stretches out a lot in both directions and it overlaps, though there are many more Indians very light skin then people realize. They look like white people after a tan, or simply white. But basically, colorism from colonial rule has made the beauty standard unachievable for the majority of Indians, and because we kicked the British out decades ago we can internalize this self-loathing without understanding it's roots in racism. The beauty/media industry is fueled by self-loathing anyway, pushing the unattainable. Would we admire celebrities with attainable beauty?

Seriously? I love Lupita but I think people are fooling themselves or lying to themselves when they say she is beautiful. She is just ok. Just there. Not pretty. Not ugly. Just there. It jas nothing to do with her being dark. When I was growing up, I only liked Black skinned men, not dark skin so it's bot colourism for me.

I recognised her from Kama Sutra. She is very appealing in the movie, I wanted to know her story as her charachter spoke about the lack of honour men had for their wives, whom she had connected with. Great video on Rekha. Karine, I have just finished watching An Easy Girl on Netflix. The actress Zahia Dehar is in it, she has an intriguing real life. Maybe a woman you could do a video on?

rekha is one of the most beautiful and enigmatic actresses we’ve ever had. it’s sad that people remember her mostly for her (alleged) relationship with amitabh bachchan and how he went on to have a decent family, while she’s growing old alone. i’m so glad i found this video because she’s still so misunderstood. hope she lives on in people’s minds as the iconic person she is!

This video was actually really inspiring and motivating to watch, a shy girl, who worked hard to improve her skills, became a respected actress and overcame all the hate. This story fills me with hope that I can become a better person and achieve more. I am not very familiar with Rekha but I'm glad now that I know about her. She seems like a timeless beauty both inside and out.

Indian standards are VERY specific for beauty. especially since many are naturally very small and skinny, being “larger” is a huge thing. not only that, but complexion, proportions, facial features (specifically north vs south), hair type, hair length, height, weight, and more are all extremely criticized. i face it too when visiting india, it’s a huge shock from growing up in america also for some reason india is in DENIAL about dark skinned indians existing. we naturally have pale to deep skin, but we call basically brown skinned ppl dark, cuz it’s dark by white standards. A lot of these standards are from india being extremely anti black. being told you look black is like the biggest insult to them… it’s so disturbing. and it’s still so so bad… India is beautiful and has an amazing rich and deep history, but hate and willful ignorance runs rampant
