How do romances in romantic comedies compare to real life? What’s your favorite ‘90s romcom?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are doing a blast from the past by watching and ranking ‘90s romcoms. They’re ranking the romances from Clueless, Never Been Kissed, Pretty Woman, Sleepless in Seattle, and While You Were Sleeping. Jonathan ranks them from worst to best in terms of relationship quality, and Alan makes snide remarks about the quality of the films - though some of them are great - and he really goes off one one of them. Can you guess which one?

Why do I feel like Alan just vented the weight of the world off his chest!?! Haha. In all seriousness, that was hilarious! I now want to know what other movies Alan needs to rant about, because if its so bad that ALAN (one of the most compassionate people and film makers out there) NEEDS TO VENT...that movie messed up BIG TIME!

I suspect the reason for the (lingering) darkness in the Pretty Woman script is that it wasn’t meant to be a romantic comedy to begin with. I also don’t see their relationship quite as one-sided. On paper Vivienne is the one that needs saving, but really she isn’t broken. He is. She lives in bad circumstances, yes, but Edward can’t hold down a relationship, does a horrible job, has all the money in the world, but no idea how to enjoy it… The nastiness of the fight shows the difference between them quite well. She is a lot more mature in many ways. And she’s absolutely willing to walk away until he digs into his feelings and gives her a proper apology. In the end, too, he tries to “buy” her to stay in his life, but it’s not what she wants, so she walks away. He has to get over himself to deserve her. Really it’s a story of personal growth as well.

Thank you! I am shocked that they ranked that one at the bottom. I mean, they at least are pretty honest with each other. They know truths about each other that they hide from others and being with each other let’s them be more honest with even themselves. Three of the others are based on pure lies! In two of them, they know so little about the other person, it’s crazy!!

I'm German and I remember my mum ranting about Hollywood romcoms one day back in the 90ies when I was a teenager. She sat me down and said: "Americans might believe this is what love is about, but here in Germany actually falling in love isn't the story and isn't the complicated part, the story starts at the wedding and is nothing like those films. It's about accepting that your partner isn't perfect and about respecting yourself and each other as people. This stuff is like food from MC Donald's and true love is like grandma's roast pork with red cabbage and dumplings."😂
@Liberteabelle

I agree about all of that… except the cabbage LOL

And btw I’m American and think normal people agree with your mum. It’s a shame that other countries view Americans through the lens of entertainment, which is always stilted toward some story goal and rarely realistic. I have a lot of Asian friends who think this about our American family culture and I keep telling them that what they see on TV isn’t how we really are (for the most part)… for instance, me and my siblings take care of our aging parents and they are usually shocked.

In Clueless, Josh has this talk with Cher, after the stressed lawyer scolds her and says she’s destroyed her father’s case. What Josh says there, shows how Josh sees her good heart, he sees how she tries to take care of everyone. It’s not just that she’s cute, he sees her good core.

I will say, Bill Pullman's character in Sleepless in Seattle, Walter, might be one of my favorite parts about the movie. Sure, Annie and Walter basically don't have any romantic chemistry or passion in the movie, reading more as friends than future wife and husband, so they're clearly not supposed to be right for each other even though they're engaged, at least in movie-language... But I appreciate how he takes their breakup. He's obviously hurt, but understands that Annie's looking for a different kind of relationship than he can give her. He's not the jealous, possessive or mean-spirited type that Rom-Coms often paint the ex as. Instead he gives her his blessing to find her happiness elsewhere simply because he wants her to be happy.

Walter is a good solid man in the film - in the beginning when he’s trying to learn her family and romantically treating her to New York and going to Tiffany’s and picking out china - they are obviously two peas in a pod. His reaction when she broke their engagement was kind and I think he would have taken her back if it didn’t work out.

Actually you got it spot on with Clueless being so like Emma - because it actually is Emma! Clueless was actually a reworking of Emma for modern audiences. This was right around the 90s resurgence of Austen being popular thanks to the success of the BBC version Pride and Prejudice. That's why you feel the narrative beat-for-beats match. Cher is Emma, Josh is Mr Knightley, Tai is Harriet Smith, Elton is Mr Elton and Christian is Frank Churchill. Those are the direct changeovers, other characters were blended to make singular characters to trim the story down but yeah, that's why you guys hit it on the head noticing the Emma similarities 😊💜

Thanks so much for your "Never Been Kissed" rant, Alan! Teacher/Student relationships always make me uneasy, especially if they're romanticised. It doesn't matter if Sam and Josie are both adults around the same age, he THOUGHT that she was his underage student for all the time he knew her, meaning that their entire relationship was based on a lie. He also had a girlfriend, and I don't think that it was mentioned if they'd broken up or not. Never been kissed was one of my favourite movies as a teenager, but when I watched years later and I had teenage nieces, I realised the huge ick factor… Whilst you were sleeping was always my favourite and remains so these days. The chemistry of both leads is unmatched, the whole cast is hilarious and those family conversations where everyone is talking about different things (“can you imagine Dustin Hoffman taking the Alamo?”) are so much like my family that I find them really endearing. We do see Josh fall in love with Cher slowly, it's just subtle!! First, the car scene with Josh, Cher, and Josh's at the time girlfriend is the first sign that Josh finds her charming/sees her hidden intelligence. Also, the more Cher grows and begins to genuinely care about other people and put their needs first, Josh is the first to take notice and he begins to fall in love with her. He goes from calling her out on her crap to seeing how much she's changed from an annoying sister figure to a generous, loving and genuinely selfless young woman. He only starts to like her when she starts to mature and better herself, "makeover her soul" if you will. Also it's addressed in the movie that Cher isn't interested in anything below the equator until she KNOWS he's the right one, and even toward the end when we see they're together, she says "gosh I'm only 16!" so she's very aware of her age and willing to take it very slow until she's a consenting adult. :)

Her story of being alone and falling in love with the whole family mirrors mine… I love the scene where they are opening presents and she’s just watching them, just drinking in the interactions. “While You Were Sleeping” is one of my FAVORITE romcoms EVER!!! Though Lucy was a tad selfish of trying to hang around Jack’s family just to hide her loneliness, there is SUCH a great relationship development between Lucy and Jack that ACTUALLY develops into love because they spend time with each other (without it being sexual). There’s a GREAT cast, GREAT humor, and GREAT respect between Jack and Lucy. PLEASE everybody watch for a great feel-good movie ♥️♥️♥️

She’d probably hate me since I am actually romance repulsed. My mom also thought I hated love because I found the romcoms she watched BORING and I kept calling the characters idiots. It’ll why do so many romcoms have the “idiot plot”? I also never had the “boy crazy” phase growing up and had no context for it so I just thought my classmates were having some collective mental breakdown. And whenever adults would do the “so who do you wanna marry and have babies with?” Question I actually would dry heave. Weird that they never asked the boys that…why is there so much stigma against women having no interest in romance. It it’s perfectly fine for men? Just get off my case Aphrodite! I think I've only once seen a character that does grand gestures and it comes of as actual love. That would be Jack from This is Us. "While You Were Sleeping" is my absolute top pick because; - the slipping on ice scene is snortingly funny and charming - "I noticed he was... leaning" humour of Joe Jr, (amzaing timing of an experienced stand up comic), and a touch of pathos about Joe Jr - but he's not just a gag, he grows and has integrity too - The bittersweet fairytale mix of a decent, kind, generous person/prphan, aline in the world, who was hurt horribly by life's random cruelty, but is *still* hopeful & kind... meets a beautiful, loving, accepting family/future, who embrace her It is just a lovely, hopeful, quiet film, sweet, kind and romantic.

I like that in Pretty Woman the fight is more realistic. He’s not the most up-standing, respectful guy treating her perfectly all the time, he is the type of guy who would hire a prostitute. And she shouldn’t stay with a guy who treats her like that, but he may be the first guy she’s been with who attempted an apology and admitted he was wrong, so she thinks that’s pretty respectful. They do truly care about each other, flaws and all, and I think he does learn to do better.

While you were sleeping is one of my favorite movies. I think their relationship has the best potential for working (despite the proposal at the end) bc they learned to really see each other and the dreams of the other and encouraged the furniture making and Italy passport stamp even when it didn’t seem either would gain or benefit from the other’s desires. They were already supportive of each other when it appeared they were to be in-laws. And she came clean about her lies before any true relationship could start and when she told the truth, she didn’t expect anything from him, asked for no second chance and took responsibility for deceiving everyone. Was the whole movie a bit silly far fetched? Yes, but in a delightful way. Hands down, my fav rom-com. I adore Bullock’s and Pullman’s chemistry, and agree supporting cast is… chef’s kiss!

I think Meg Ryan’s “nice to meet you” in the elevator implies that they don’t run off into the sunset and instead choose to start seeing each other like any other newly found relationship. That’s actually one of my favorite things about sleepless in Seattle - it would’ve been easy to do some big romantic kiss like every other movie. Instead they replaced it with smiles and awkward staring and a sweet “nice to meet you” to tie it off. Perfect ending and dare I say pretty realistic if we get past all the other coincidences earlier in the movie. Now dissect French kiss! It’s my favorite Meg Ryan movie and one of the best movies for a love that grows naturally over the course of the film to where when they finally get together, it makes perfect sense. It’s one of those movies that still gives me butterflies and the acting is unbelievable.

Yes, I though that too. It seemed like he was asking her to go somewhere so they could start getting to know each other, and in the process they both felt the spark when their hands touched. We the audience know that it will all work out because we know how compatible they are (and we're supposed to see them as meant to be) but the characters aren't declaring lifelong love yet. Also it's never clear if she's "leaving her life behind" like the speaker in this video implied, it's left unanswered exactly how they work the distance out - but we are just supposed to have faith they will, because we know they are fated to be together.

yall are majorly missing the point, yes its great that the ending isnt framed like theyre instantly in love and dating. but the problem is the woman STALKED HIM. If this was about a man who hears a womans voice and stalks her all the way to her town and the movie implies thats normal and okay and healthy and theyre GOING to end up together, i would really hope at least then you would realize how absolutely bonkers and scary that is. Stalking is not a healthy start to a relationship, people that resort to stalking usually dont see their target as an equal human being that they want a healthy strong relationship with, but rather an object to admire and to own. THAT IS NOT OKAY. A WOMAN STALKING A MAN IS NOT ROMANTIC.

Ironically, Sir Lancelot wound up sleeping with a married woman. Who's husband, by the way, he had sworn loyalty to. He was lousy by modern AND medieval standards.

@19Rena96 Largely because medieval readers really buzzed off a tragedy. Watching Lancelot fall from grace was probably very popular with 15th century audiences.

I only watched this because you had one of my absolute favorite films in your screenshot--While You Were Sleeping. I am utterly relieved you didn't trash it. I'll be honest: I buy the "straight to engagement" portion of their romance. I knew I'd marry my husband the moment he asked me to date him. We did wait a year to get engaged but as you rightly pointed out: escaping reality is why we love movies. We want to skip to the best parts. It's why I always defend movie relationships; we WANT to believe characters can live happily ever, even if they haven't known each other for very long. Thank you for not trashing a treasure.

Yeah! Already at the time I thought Meg Ryan in it is the scariest female character right after Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction, and Sharon Stone in Basic Instict.

While You Were Sleeping is my ultimate comfort movie. When i saw they were going to discuss it I was very concerned they were going to tear it to shreds for it's absurdity. I'm glad it passed with flying colours! I'd like to suggest a review of a obscure Disney movie carried Condorman. It's beautiful because it's campy.

I adore While You Were Sleeping; it's my very favorite rom com. Admittedly I have grown to like rom coms less as I've gotten older, but the key to a good rom com is ALWAYS a great supporting cast. The family in While You Were Sleeping makes the movie.

Does anyone else think that Never Been Kissed would have been a great thriller? I mean an abusive teacher taking advantage of an underage student only to reveal the monster he is when she turns out to be an adult he can't control.
