22:04 - Rising from the Ashes :) (stream starts) 40:10 (Interview with Isaac and Nick) I bought the core set, sadly had no one to play with. Sometimes I see the core set box in toy shops. The game had a lot of promise, the art is one of the highlights. I'd say the core needs a lot of balancing which the later expansions were probably designed to do. But then again, I remember that each "expansion" pack was also pushing the power creep... I remember teaching one of my friends to play it. But working with only the core, a lot of the phoenix born were way more powerful than the others... it did remind him of magic, we only got around 2 games. I will say, the game feels very streamlined. The main downside to me with just the coreset was lack of variety in deckbuilding. There were only a few neutrals that really stood out and were basically staples. The main thing I hated about Magic was the resource. The randomness of being "mana-screwed" meant that every 2-3 games someone was bound to lose simply by no lands, too little lands, or drawing too many lands. The dice felt a lot better. I am still conflicted over Ashe's being able to choose your starting hand, was definitely an enjoyable change of pace. I wish it was more available in my area. Really happy with what you guys are doing - I hope this game rises from the ashes :) OH one big thing would be multi-player 3-4 player games of ashes would be super interesting... although I don't know how that would work.
They actually put out official drafting rules for the core box for multiplayer, which we haven't tried but are interested in! media.plaidhatgames.com/old_images/games/ashes/ashesdraftbig.png That concept could definitely be expanded with additional content. Agreed on the balance out of the box; that's likely a big part of the 1.5 rebalance. Thank you for taking the time to write such an insightful comment!
Instantly subscribed, as well as bought everything plaidhat had on there site, along with an extra set of the two deluxe expansions to gift my friend who got me into the game ages ago.
Just saw this video and your email..subscribed to Ashes immedeately! Guys you are doing phenomenal stuff! I am trying to support as much as I can from overseas. Y'll are incredible!
Never played Ashes before, but I have just jumped on this subscription and bought some 1.0 from Plaid Hat. You guys have always picked out good games as far as I am concerned and sometimes you just got to have faith ! I believe that good games do die so I am also hoping that this new model of supporting games works and allows other great games stay alive / get reborn. I thought I would help the experiment. As Ghandi said ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’ ! Best of luck with this TC.
You won't be disappointed! Hope to see you on Wednesday, and thank you for the support. This one deserves it, and proving this model is something we're very excited about.
Pre-ordered ‘Reborn’ starter set.. VERY excited! Just trying to work out if I can get/afford the subscription in the UK. 🤔 Absolutely LOVE your content btw.. just got into Netrunner thanks to your vids! (Such a shame I missed it when it was in print! 😭)
I hope this time around Plaid Hat Games includes lore with the Phoenixborns, to promote players to care about these characters. Maeonie Viper desperately needs retooling, limited to 3 units is harsh. Especially when you have a Phoenixborn who exiles conjurations from the game as her basic ability.
Man, I have mixed feelings about the upgrade having to dump my collection. As I own everything from the series and have 2 cores for the dice pools and doubles of the expansion boxes for the new dice. Updated: So, if you are among those who have 100% of the entire original series, this upgrade is supplementing the cards, not flat out replacing every card? My fear was that my collection is dead with the new update. Updated again: Okay, my questions were answered in later part of the video. Thanks for covering this. I got into Ashes back in the day when you streamed it years ago. I still love the game and continue to play it among my friends.
I'm so glad you guys reached out to Plaid Hat Games. I posted my subscription. When I first saw the art for Maeonie Viper, I was sold on the game, even though I had no idea what the game was about. She is my favorite among the Phoenixborns. The journey wasn't easy for Ashes, but hopefully the community will support it in making a comeback.
Thanks so much for putting this together, guys! It was great to see and hear Isaac and Nick. I especially love Isaac's enthusiasm for the game and his hope of seeing it become a more ubiquitous brand
1. Please, please add Orrick Gilstream and his Gobi Sunshields to the 1.5 box. 2. Please offer 5 or 10 packs of all the dice, really would like to get more divine and symphony dice and looks like time dice when released. 3. Thank you Covenant and PHG for coming together on this!
The Almighty Game Genie, they do for the 4 dice that come in the core box, they never released dice packs for the divine or symphony dice that came in later expansions.
amazing this is happening, so cool. is there like... a place we could check on how many subscribers there are? i'm guessing prob not, this isn't crowdsourcing, lol, but would be great to have something to check on instead of just waiting until some notice goes out somewhere that it's on
First of all, great interview. I love you guy's interview style, you have this great way of parsing out relevant bits of discussion. So kudos. I'd also like to mention that I actually got into Ashes because of you guys and I think the game is phenomenal. Very happy to see it come back. Having said all that stuff, I think the problem going forward is that it is a bad time for two player games. I havent seen my EDH group in about five months and we have a huge community. Corona virus is still very real which puts a huge damper on games like this. While I wish you guys all the success in the world and plan to subscribe, I wonder how long a game like this can sustain on a subscription model when we can't play it.
Totally understand, and are curious ourselves. Many Ashes players are saying that it plays really well over Skype/Zoom, which makes sense given the dice are easily visible. But in-person play is where it's at. Hopefully by the time the Upgrade Pack is released, we'll be getting back to some kind of normalcy. We'll see. It could just be the Upgrade Pack and then everyone drops. It's completely up to the players.
@@teamcovenant Timing is a bit weird I must admit, but if all this drops around the time we can start going to stores again, it could also invigorate the playerbase to go out and play
Grabbed a subscription as soon as I heard. So excited to get the new set, I'm just like you guys on the rules changes. Every time a new spoiler is released, I fall back in love with the game and the people behind it.
I loved Ashes when it came out. I played religiously with friends who didn’t like the money aspect of MTG (you buy the core set of Ashes or a solo deck and you have access to the same card pool as everyone else). Haven’t touched my cards in years. I’m glad to finally be able to jump back in and battle it out.
Actually, it's more alive than it was 2 years ago! NISEI is creating new cards, new MWL, new events, ... Have a look at the last cycle: nisei.net/products/Uprising
I'm a new player, and Ashes seems really cool! Is there a recommended product to pick up in anticipation of 1.5, or will 1.5 be enough for a new player to start?
We've been suggesting Core Set + Subscription as a solid budget start! Second best is Core Set + Law of Lions + Song of Soaksend + Subscription to get all of the current dice in the game. At that point you can play any Phoenixborn.
I couldn't be happier. I got into Ashes about a month before it died. I played a few games with the core set, loved it, and bought most of the expansions. I think I got the news that it had died the same day I got the new decks in lol. Brilliant game, tons of fun, can't wait for the Phoenixs (Phoeni?) to rise again!
i initially bought ashes core after watching TC's vid interview with Isaac at GenCon and then bought a 2nd core for drafting as well as several expansions. i ultimately stopped playing ashes because it was hard to find community and because the rules and timing became cumbersome and confusing even for the kitchen table. i just watched as nick explained in the interview how they updated very specific pain points of the game and am sold again. easiest subscription purchase for me ever. simple product communication, easy 1.5 upgrade and easy purchase plan through TC. this approach is so great, thanks TC and PHG for making this happen and to PHG for fixing this great game and breathing fresh life back into it. can't wait to break this game back out!
This is so cool. I never got into Ashes originally but this has got me to now buy the original core set. The one older ccg i'd love to see come back is Rage. It's the Werewolf: the Apocalypse rpg ccg. It's one of the few ccg's that worked well for 3+ Players.
I have a question regarding the product. I don't know if you can answer it. I saw that there is an Upgrade box, but also there is a Master Set for the relaunch. Can you tell me what the difference is? And also what the Master set wil contain? I am asking this, cause I always was somewhat interested in the game, but never actually got to buy the original game.. I live in Europe and sometimes games are a bit harder to obtain here. So with this new relaunch I am hoping to get into this game. I would like to know what the difference is and what these boxes contain to know what is best for me to buy. Thanks in advance ^^
@@teamcovenant Thanks for the answer.. though there is no mention of the master set.. I opted to buy the Starter set from the original Ashes game at an online store along with a few decks I could find.. Wil probably buy the Reborn pack when it is released.. if it wil ofcourse still be available.. I saw the scheduled date was December this year.. is that accurate? Thanks for reviving the game also.. I am very hyped after seeing your video 👍
3:32:08 Zach: _"I read this book on innovation and invention, of computer technology in the past 100 years"_ Would you be willing to share the name of this book? Sounds like a cool read!
Sorry didn’t have time to watch all this, just wanting to know is this release just an upgrade kit or can you get the base game as well? I don’t own the game at all and it’s pretty much sold out where I buy my games.
Check this FAQ for all your answers! Short answer, you can buy a Core Set from Plaid Hat and you're good to go: teamcovenant.com/ashes-rise-of-the-phoenixborn/ashes-1-5-frequently-asked-questions-clarifications
So excited for this! Have everything... Twice. Great art work and game play. Would love to get the subscription and get the 1.5 upgrade kits and new stuff. Will it be available in the UK at all?
Check the FAQ we just put up, Steve! Plaid Hat is working on international distribution if subscription numbers are solid enough. teamcovenant.com/ashes-rise-of-the-phoenixborn/ashes-1-5-frequently-asked-questions-clarifications
Did we think about it? It's an interesting idea, and Plaid Hat could pursue it if they saw it in their best interest. Subscriptions are about serving physical products, so that's our focus.
After you do Namine's "Calming Melody" side action, does she then have 2 exhaustion tokens on her? 1 as part of the cost to do the side action, 1 as part of the resolution of that side action? This would mean that at 3:10:56, Zach's Namine should have 2 exhaustion tokens on her, right? Or not? This could be important b/c that means she can only exhaust her opponent's Phoenixborn every other turn. (Unless you include something in your deck to remove exhaustion tokens.) Update: Aha! At 3:32:50 Zach realized that the above is indeed true: Namine's "Calming Melody" results in 2 exhaustion tokens on her.
Ok. I have core box old version. If I subscribe right now. I get 1.5 for 30 bucks? Shipping soon? Still need to buy reborn base set? 50? I want in I dse delay but you got the 1k and are producing
If you have the old Core Box, subscribing right now will get you the updates versions of all of your Core Set cards - and every other updated card in the entire Ashes card pool - for $30. It is all printed. Just waiting on the boats.
Super excited to see this coming back! Of course, I subscribed as soon as I saw the announcement. Do you think that, with the success of this, it could mean a similar treatment for Crystal Clans and Guardians? I always felt like those two got a raw deal, and blamed Asmodee for cutting them (whether it was their fault or not).
I wanted to ask, will there be a way to buy new products in retail ( or at least are there any plans to)? I am from Poland and the shipping price is killer for me. It basically doubles cost of subscription. I wanted to organize larger group to lower shipping costs, but not much people were interested in my country.
@@marcotuliodeavellar4298 Cześć. Jesteś na grupie Ashes: Odrodzenie z popiołów - Grupa Ogólnopolska? Tam jest post, w którym próbujemy coś zorganizować.
She actually left before the last few Ashes expansions were created, and her style was followed so well that no one noticed. That will continue to be the case moving forward! The art style and graphic design laid out by the original team will remain!
You can control your subscription however you like at any time by visiting your Account page: teamcovenant.com/my-account/subscriptions If you ever want to change the quantity, just cancel your current subscription and then sign up for a new one at the updated quantity. Thanks Mike!
Team Covenant That’s happening then. Thanks very much. I’ve been a long time podcast lurker. Also want to point out how much I really enjoy the music intro you use on the podcast. Thanks!
Did they say anything about maybe an ashes play app? given that covid will prevent in person play for a while, I mean i subbed twice just to support the cause
I'm a little nervous about the conversing about "triggered effects". I'm a combo player in most games I play so triggered effects are a big contender for my deckbuilding choices.... so my old competitive Brennan deck might end up obsolete cuz of these rules changes :/
I get the concern to a degree, but also think that multiple chained reactions can cause a bit of a headache so I see the benefit in streamlining things
Netrunner: What about a PDP for Project Nisei System Gateway/Update? Would rather give money to you guys (bulk pricing passed on to customers) than an independent printing press.
We're playing the original game - no new content being featured, as explained in the video. Here's an FAQ: teamcovenant.com/ashes-rise-of-the-phoenixborn/ashes-1-5-frequently-asked-questions-clarifications
