This brought back so many awesome memories. I remembered it was my 9th birthday and my dad pulled a wrapped box from the closet. My mind was racing trying to figure out what it was. As I unwrapped it I immediately saw the huge green "N" in the corner and I couldn't contain my excitement. My parents didn't have a lot of money at the time and I connected the dots on why my dad was having to work late for a few months leading up to my birthday. My parents couldn't afford to buy me games and one of the gifts from my mom was a wrapped Blockbuster bag with Super Mario 64 rental for a week. Everyday that entire week coming home from school I raced to finish my homework, inhaled my dinner, then spent the last 3 hours of my night playing Super Mario until my bedtime. I used all of my birthday money from my family and did some yard work for the neighbors so that I could buy Super Mario 64 on my own after returning it to Blockbuster. A few more months of yard work I was able to afford Mario Kart 64. Friday nights were game nights and we would all play Mario Kart together. My mom got really good and my dad's favorite character to play was Yoshi. I love you mom and dad, thank you for the memories.

Thanks for that, buddy. I sincerely hope that you and your parents are doing well by today. I also remembered my good old days with my siblings and friends. We played it back in the late 2000's, a friend introduced it to me. I used to play it 2-hours/ day when not on school examination period, and then my sister after me, and then my brother after her. We got instanctly addicted to it, and after that, I introduced it to other friends who got all excited as well to play the game. Mario had a huge impact on our lives. And after that, a year later to be precise, I discovered my greatest passion in the gaming world: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I remember things such as getting with a ton of its music (Windmill Hut, Sun's Song and Forest Temple, for example) stuck into my head for hours; remember that me and my brother played it together and grew Link up on the same day. We were genuinely enraged against Ganondorf. I remember when I first headed to Lake Hylia with grown Link and exclaimed to my brother: "Look what this bastard did to the Lake!", and then to Zora's Domain, and everywhere else on the game... Thanks, God, for these days..

Fuck man, I miss those days, I hate being an adult, everything was so much simpler, all you needed was a small tv, your console, and hours of gameplay without internet, micro transactions, or life issues. If only there was a way to go back in time and relieve those happy days. Now I have all the consoles, the internet, my own money power to buy games, yet I only turn my consoles on once in a while... I can't even count how many times I've listened to this playlist. As most of us here, I grew up playing the N64 and absorbing so many incredible songs that became a part of who I am. Even the songs from games I didn't play are somehow calming and nostalgic. I mean, look at all of us. Sharing memories and unique stories. Being brought together by one common thread. This is by far the best playlist to chill, work, throw yourself into the nostalgia realm. I'am 32 years old, with a lot of good memories from the n64 days, as today almost everyday working at home i listen to this soundtrack and i can focus and relax as i doing my work. I can't describe exaclty into words what is the feeling of confort and coziness. At this point in my life i have a wife and a 2 years son, very diferent from that time in my life that i didn't have to work or have responsabilities, but with this type of music i can feel the exact same familiar ambient that i have when i was a child. I found myself truly happy, because i have a family that i chosed to have, with the same vibe as those that i played n64 with my father and mom together, and a healthy relationship with my brother.

It's nostalgia. And this is a very healthy way of using it. Instead of longing for the past, you're appreciating what you used to have while also appreciating what you have now. That's what I do. I'm going to look back on my life now with the same nostalgia as I'm feeling for my N64 days. I'm in a very similar position as you. Mid 30s, 2 year old daughter.

I'm 40, so I got to experience the golden age of gaming from the start and the N64 is still one of my favorite systems. It had some of the best damn games. I started to tear up a bit at the Donkey Kong 64 tracks. My sister and I put in so many hours on that game and we'd always leave our character in the main area if we needed a break, simply because the music is so calming. I didn't play all of these games, but a good majority of them. I was 14 when it came to the US and my mother got the bundle pack from Costco that came with Mario 64. That Xmas, the whole family sat in front of the living room TV to play it. I think my mom still has a poloroid of that day. Around the year 2001 or so, the Pikachu system was on clearance at TRU (rip) for $50, so I snagged one. I still have it. 💛 I wanna play my old games again. Emulators are great, but there will always be something irreplaceable and special about playing off those bulky cartridges and the rumble pack. And let's not forget the expansion pack you were forced to get in order to play DK64. My mom was so pissed. 😅 I'm always grateful to have grown up in the 80s and 90s. Amazing decades to be a kid.

DK 64 will always have a special place in my heart even though I know it was an uncreative cash grab built on the Banjo Kazooie engine. I received this game in the fall of 1999 when it came out. My brother was 11 and I was 7. I used to watch him play this game in our basement on our old Zenith tv. It was from the 80s but our Dad somehow rigged an N64 up to it using a VCR, I honestly was too young to remember how the setup came to be. Anyway we made it all the way to Hideout Helm but ended up getting stuck since we didn't have the rare coin. My brother heard from a friend then that you needed to beat the arcade game in Frantic Factory to get it. He never did end up beating the arcade game and eventually we moved on to different games. Fast forward to 2010 and he died in a car crash so he never will get to beat the game. In 2014 I plugged in the same N64 and started a new file on the same cartridge. I finally beat it for the two of us at age 23.

Holy shit.. that's almost exactly what happened with me. Me and my older brother could never beat that stupid mini game as kids, and he passed in 2013 in a car accident. I finished the game very shortly after his passing, but Im sad just thinking about it cuz I used to yell for him anytime I beat anything big/significant in the game, and I still wanted to when I finished that damn game.. Dk64 was so iconic to us, especially since we had that green dk64 edition console. We wore that thing to the ground.. and the amount of controller thumbsticks that were broken. Lots of memories with it all. This has honestly been the only time I got emotional reading/writing something online. I'm truly sorry to hear you had a similar experience, but I appreciate you saying something. It brought back alot of memories, I just wish it didn't have to happen this way.

I now know why vaporwave- and retrosynth-esque playlists resonate so much with me. It’s not only because I have been blessed to have been born in the eighties and got a good grasp of the nineties. Of course, there is a melancholic and nostalgic vibe that is responsible for my initial interest to listen to this type of music. However, there is something more. A feeling which may be hard to describe, but I’ll try. It is a feeling of isolation, solitade, loneliness. When me and my little brother used to play games on the N64 or Gamecube, it was just us on the attic of my parents’ house. Games were developping very fast back then, from 2 to 2.5 and 3D. All these changes were coming to us at a rapid pace and we just strapped in and enjoyed the ride. Kind of like the feeling you got when you first watched Jurassic Park. It was insane. This was the futute? I’m all-in! Me and and my best friend used to play goldeneye for hours on saturday evenings, just us. No one else. We would even skip school dances to just play this game we loved. There was nothing weird about it, we just liked playing games more than going to parties where hormones prevented you from even thinking clearly. I was and still not am ashamed of it either. My girlfriend is pregnant and we are expecting our first child. Meanwhile, a couple of weeks ago I completed Resident Evil 2 on the gamecube. Might be a strange period of time to do so, but I still long for that feeling games used to give me when I was young. It was simpler but so much more pure. No on-line lobby with a bunch of people screaming profanities or whatever. Just a solid game you could play and enjoy with a friend or a brother.

The year was 1999, Christmas eve. I wiped sleep from my eyes as I heard laughter down the hallway. I peered around the corner to see my uncle and brother playing Mario Kart 64. Colorful characters racing on two sides of the screen split. I was immediately enticed. I picked up the oddly shaped controller, selected a strange green creature with an abnormally large nose, and started my engine. I drove against the borders of the track the whole way. But from that point on, I was hooked.

I don't normally comment, but I'm 28 years old now. When I was a young child growing up in the late 90's I received a N64 my grandma picked up from a garage sale. It came with Ocarina of Time, Banjo Kazooie, and Super Mario. I was about 4 or 5 years old and hadn't learned to read or do math bigger than 2+2. My grandmother, however, would always sit down with me, and read to me what was going on in the stories, or tell me what numbers added up, or subtracted to. She eventually got as invested into the story of Ocarina of Time as I was. She wanted to know how we were going to save Princess Zelda and Hyrule. She was always there from the moment I left Kokiri Forest, until I beat Ganon. As far as I'm concerned we beat that game together. Years pass. I was about 24 years old. I would sell my N64 and all of my games due to financial trouble, and my grandmother would fall ill. So, when she stayed home she wanted something to do. She ordered a N64 off of Ebay, along with Ocarina of Time. When it arrived, I helped her set it up to her old CRT she had. She was diagnosed with early onset dementia. She was slowly losing herself. I began to read the story to her, because she was losing her eyesight, and she struggled with the math and puzzles. But, this time, we would not beat the game together. My grandmother fell, and would pass away due to complications from the fall on Februrary 14th, Valentine's Day 2019. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about her, especially when I replay Ocarina of Time every year. I miss her deeply. I love you Ace.

This video is literally a tiny piece of the 90's that is still inside all of us who were kids back then, and refuses to die. It won't die until WE do, dammit! And even THEN, it might live on because we'll tell our kids about the great games and shows from our time!

Totally agree. I honestly wish they still made CRTV's just so we could get that same nostalgia feel. I mean I don't mind playing Ocarina of Time on a modern TV but it just doesn't feel the same. If I ever have kids they are only going to be allowed to play the N64 or older games until they are 10.

@@samuelneese482 While I agree with kids playing the old games we grew up in the 1990s, I wouldn't want my kids to miss out what was popular during their childhood either. Letting them play both old and current games would be ideal even before they reach 10 years old. There are still great current games right now.

My computer is in the corner, with the window behind me. Living in an apartment in the middle of town, there are orange streetlights everywhere. Looking out of the window, hand pressed against the cool glass while staring at the orange lights with this playing in the background... It really does bring back memories. Thank you.

Holy fudge this takes me back! This background reminds me of Friday and Saturday nights when my mom let my brother and I's friends over for a sleepover. They would bring their N64 controllers and we would be up until midnight playing Mario Kart, Mario Party, Smash Bros, Pokemon Stadium, Didddy Kong Racing, Jet Force Gemini, Banjo Tooie multiplayer, and Goldeneye. Man I miss the 90s...

I grew up in a life of crime and isolation and depression. My mind is so painful. Sometimes when i feel like im fixing to blow my brains out ill look up music from the n64 days and it brings me some kind of peace that nothing else in the world can provide. It's been a long and agonizing road I've been on but i still have these little memories of sitting in front of a small snowy tv playing mario/zelda

The production of this video is so awesome. Anyone can post a song to RU-vid, but this “cozy room” sets the vibe and the subtle animations add a lot to the experience. Beautiful. And I’m sure a lot of work to put it all together.
