Releasing the spare wheel on a Peugeot 206

Walkthrough of the process for releasing the spare wheel on the Peugeot 206. The spare wheel is stored underneath the car, and requires a hook to be loosened from the boot to release it. Hopefully this video helps explain how!
I should mention... when reversing the steps, to secure the spare wheel back under the car, be careful to check the cage afterwards, to ensure you can't lift it off the hook. The screw must be appropriately tightened in the boot to ensure the hook is secure, otherwise there is a risk of the cage jumping off the hook while you are driving along.

Is it very heavy releasing it from hook by hand... and then when putting the wheel back into cage and having to lift it back up onto hook again.. is that heavy and hard to do again? Im wondering how Im going to manage this with the weight of the wheel

i never understand this idea of putting the spare wheel outside the car, and not in the boot like in other cars, its the same on my Citroen c2, this makes the wheel get all rusty, and sometimes even the rubber can get damaged, not to mention its harder to access

Hey let's hang the spare wheel under the car where it will get corroded and covered in mud and dead badgers from the road. Crappy design. Where the cradle goes press a wheel-shaped dip in the boot and put the wheel in there, you know, like normal cars! Admittedly this video did save me a lot of frustration. Now where's the bonnet release handle!

Would you recommend putting a cover over the spare wheel (similar to those you see on the back of Land Rovers) to protect the wheel from rusting?
@Artexic
@Artexic 5 лет назад
Nice idea Stanley! I've never worried about it to be honest, given the wheel is a "space saver" spare (thinner, and designed purely to get you home rather than as a long term replacement). If it was possible, it would be nice to look after it. The challenge is: any pure canvas option would ripple with the airflow, and probably make quite a bit of noise when driving. But a solid structure would probably not fit in the cage. The wheel you see in the video was 10 years old at the time. The rust is unlikely to cause any issue other than aesthetics. If it's important to you for it to look good, I'd be more tempted to clean any cover rust up, then mask the rubber (and max speed sticker), and spray paint it annually to provide a layer of protection, and keep it looking good. Would be interested to see if you find a way to cover it though.

Very clear and useful video although I had worked it out myself . I do have a question though , when I fitted the space saver to get me home I could not really tighted the wheel nuts up tight to the steel space saver , they were fully tight but not up against the wheel so I had a small amount of play!! I went home really slow . Are there meant to be spacers in the kit to account for the thickness of the alloys?

The Owner's Manual with my Australian delivery 206 GTi has a diagram specifically showing you that the flat washer does not fully conform to the typical French "wavy wheel" - but this is as intended - it is secure. I'm back to these silly French ideas after more than 40 years with Japanese, German and even Italian cars that are much better designed for maintenance and access. My 1965 Renault 10 actually had specially formed wheel nuts that located correctly in the "wavy wheel " to distribute the loads properly. The 2002 GTi uses much cheaper flat washers to save a few pennies!

@Artexic
@Artexic 8 лет назад
+elitedonk Not sure about removing the cage, though as you can see in the video, if the wheel is in the cage and you tighten up the screw, it shouldn't be able to vibrate, so it's either the hinge end of the cage, or something else on the car. It would be worth putting the wheel back in for now, and may trying to rattle the cage about to see if the hinge end is loose.

Thanks - Had a wheel change at the garage and they didn't put it back properly. Several parts in the boot and the loose wheel squeaking like a demented Hyena! i found this a very useful tuition to remove my wheel,i was broke down on the side of the motorway and with slow internet connection on my phone only took 7 hours 35 minutes to remove my wheel. do you have anymore videos of how to put it back on as im still sitting here
@Artexic
@Artexic 9 лет назад
craig oloan Haha, afraid no video for that... but it's a logical reversal of the steps. You'll find that you need to manually lay on the ground and push the cage back up, and move the hook to hold onto the cage itself before you re-tighten the screw in the boot. It's not the classiest of mechanisms... I'd certainly not like to do it in wet weather on a muddy road. If you're seriously putting it back up, be careful to ensure the cage can't jump back off the hook. I lay down and physically shake/lift the cage, to make sure the screw is tight enough to prevent the cage from jumping back off the hook... particularly if no wheel is in it, that cage is vulnerable to releasing itself if not appropriately fixed in place. Hope you had luck on the motorway... not a nice experience, I'm sure.

@Artexic
@Artexic 8 лет назад
Hi Sarah, if you hook the correct part of the cage you should be ok. If the cage is empty it is possible that this is too light to fight the hook from turning. Maybe ask a friend to hold the hook or tie some rope around the cage and stand firmly on other end, keeping it tight to prevent the cage pulling upwards as you tighten the screw.
@inkedbear

@bryanleigh6497
@bryanleigh6497 6 лет назад
Bear Smith 1. You must have a wheel in the cage! 2. When screwing, lift up the cage + wheel so it presses against car. With no weight, your fingers will easily turn screw head. After a few turns, slip the latch's curved end over the cage. Use the tool finally to tighten. Not too much, don't want to damage the rubber. Just so there's no movement.

Having said that, Id have made quick sequences of the tool's location, the screw head's location, the latch underneath, unscrewing and so on. Then splice the sequences together. Not one long sequence you can't fast forward. Thanks anyway

Just reverse the actions... you need to push the cage back up and move the hook to hold the cage. Ensure you tighten the screw up enough such that the cage is able to move up and down, or it may "bounce" off the hook while you're driving along!
@electrocat9

Artexic I just got rid of the spare, just came in, why would I keep the cage, I want to reduce the weight of the car. I eventually found out how to do that, lift the car on the ramp then let the cage at about 45 deg down. Do you think it's a bad practice replacing the spare with the tyre spray? I thought that's why you removed it.
@Artexic
@Artexic 10 лет назад
Militaru Dan I needed the spare actually, hence the cage was still needed. I personally prefer a spare, as it allows for blowouts etc.. rather than waiting at the side of the road for help in these cases. That said... most new cars don't come with spare tyres these days in the UK.. it's a personal choice, I don't think it's bad practice. I'd be tempted to keep the cage in your garage at least, so it's there when you come to sell the car.
