Reliable and cleaner method for PET filament splicing

It is not perfect, but this is a cleaner and more reliable method than the candle, thanks to the small tube the joints do not break when winding the filament on the spool and the joints remain reinforced until the last moment they enter the 3D printer.
The small tube is to prevent the joints from breaking when winding the filament as well as to validate the filament diameter, I clean the joint until the small tube passes through it with a slight friction, enough to stay in the joint but easy to slide when the filament enters the printer. The inside diameter of the tube should be printed between 1.8 and 2mm.

​​@@sydneyhudnall3566 agree completely, but I think OP's first language is Spanish. I'd love to even get a Spanish language guide; presented with the opportunity I would be willing to help translate. I don't know for sure though-maybe they just haven't had the time to put a complete guide together. It could be argued that the bearings and hardware are mostly self explanatory, and I've seen other videos on their channel about putting some of that stuff together. But a list of files for the 3D printed parts, a suggestion for the electric motor, and most importantly the selection and operation of the hot-end would be hugely helpful.

​@@sydneyhudnall3566main part that does "forming" into a wire of filament is just an old printing nozzle drilled to 1.75 and chamfered for smooth passing. It's heated with an old heatblock from another printer. Basically that's it. Pulling system can be anything tbh. Curious about pulling speed tho

I use the soldering iron method too, but just have a small wooden jig for lining up the ends. I’ve had really good success with these welds not breaking, so long as I put them on those large cardboard spools! 😅

Hey, how do you deal with moisture absorption in the material? Do you leave them in the oven a few hours before pullstrusion ? Mine make bubbles idk if that’s because of the humidity evaporating, but my filament becomes easily white, not transparent.

Thanks for all your videos! I'm starting to gather parts to build one of these. Have you ever tried joining 2 bottles together right after you cut?? Seem like if you could make that work it would go through and size correctly and run.

Sadly it not works. It just soften and break from junction point of bottle strings as soon as it enter to the hotend/heater. I have tried couple things for that but all of them was failure :D

I'll add a suggestion... Maybe one of those heat sealers for plastic bags? The metal one with an arm that swings down and has an adjustable timer knob to turn off heat. Of course, you have probably tried this already lol.

As you have already been told does not work, high temperatures and forces break any union, the union would have to be perfect, as if it did not exist, because if not the strip will not enter and if the union is uneven filament also will be and affect the print, keep in mind that the work of joining it before or after is the same with the difference that before is much more difficult

Definitely an awesome thing to do. Unfortunately when I ask myself if the time it would take me to accomplish this task is worth more to me than what it would cost to just buy a roll of filament The answer is yes. Time is truly the only thing we can't get more of. If this is an enjoyable hobby then that's great but if it's being done for any other reason I think it would be hard to justify.

I can see this as a viable thing for makers in poor countries that cannot easily afford rolls of filament. Other than that it is a nice hobby I guess.

There isn't really THAT much time involved in the filament preparation. For me the lengthiest part is smoothing out the bottles- that I do while waiting for something else to happen, takes me around 30 minutes for 15-20 bottles Then cutting the bottles takes me less than a minute per bottle. Setup and taking off spool from machine- about another minute, and the machine runs on it's own for about 20-30 minutes per bottle, occasionally checking it out. In the end you're at around 1-2 hours of your time for 500-600g of filament that for some uses I find is better than other filaments (I like it more than petg for example)

@@davidl6566 Yeah that's a lot of time as far as I'm concerned. You're talking about two to four hours per kilogram of filament. Most of the time I spend 20 bucks on a kilogram of PETG so that would be between $5 and $10 an hour pay equivalent. That's not nothing but I still think I would rather use my time elsewhere. Not saying it's not cool because it is I just don't think it would be for me.

Filaments are one day salaries or half day salaries here in a poor country. It makes more sense here I guess. If filaments are 1 hour salary then it doesn't make sense to do this.

The joints are very fragile, and the PET filament is very stiff, the tubes prevent the joints from breaking, the idea is that they remain in the joint until the last moment while printing, plus I use an extra tube to validate the thickness of the filament by passing it through the entire filament

so those see through tubes are for ensuring the filament won't break in the spot where you welded them together i assume? how did it work without those? it doesn't seem like they're holding onto the filament as they dangle freely on the filament in the end of the video.

Yes, but it is so that they do not break when the filament is wound in the spool, normally there is a little friction of the union of the filaments holding the tube in the joint when the friction is null I try to keep the tube in the union when winding the filament, once the filament takes shape is no longer so rebellious so the joints are no longer in danger most of them, at the end of the video you can see several tubes that once held the joints and have accumulated at the entrance of the extruder during printing, also the tubes validate the filament along its entire length, so I use two, one for the joint and other for the validation

They aren't identical. Depends on the circuit (which I haven't looked at). Google IRLZ44N vs IRFZ44N. The F has a higher on resistance when driven by 5V on the gate.

I don't understand why don't we have PET filament without the glycol widely available. Yes, you need an all metal hotend but IMO higher thermal resistance is a big benefit. Did you find it much harder to print PET apart from raised temp and extrusion multiplier?

Most of my printers aren't all metal, and ptfe can withstand 255°C for thousands of hours without problems, PET has a lower layer adhesion due to the absence of glycol but can be handled by printing slowly and without layer fan

its a regular mk8 nozzle for printer like ender drilled to roughy 1.8mm size. you can use anything that can do low rpm and have enough torque, mostly people use nema17 stepper motor but you can use el screwdriver powerdrill motor maybe even servo if it has enough force.

@@WIESAG_Official yes, the size of filament depends how thick and wide your strips are so nozzle hole is not the only factor. I for example have drilled my to 2 mm and can still produce around 1.75 mm filament. The hole doesn't have to be exact, start from 1.8 and see how it goes. Filament doesn't have to be exactly 1.75, 1.6 works too just increase your flow to eg 120 or 130, just make sure it doesn't go above 1.8ish or it'll clog

PETG is superior for 3D printing in many ways. Still weird that PETE filament is basically unavailable given that it works fairly well and is one of the most widely used polymeres,

@@jakx2ob More than being used in the 3D printing comunitty, I wanted to say it more in general. Idk if PETG can be obtained from plastic objects as PET filaments do, but dude, PET filament just have so much potential, you can do personalised plastic bottles in any shape you want, you can make any kind of little objects to use in your daily life, you can even make sticks for your broom in case you break it, but the best and more important: You can get the material from plastic bottles that you were gonna throw anyway. Again, if PETG can be obtained from plastic bottles too, it only makes it even better lmfao.

@@kr3533 3d printing bottles doesn't work that great, no matter the material. Getting thin walled materials to be RELIABLY waterproof is a challenge and you can't really spent hours of machine time per PET bottle. 3D printing is only really starting out as a manufacturing technology for consumer goods. Established companies are unlikely to switch to 3D printing for mass production but new companies are making products with 3D printing.

The tubes are not used to connect the filament but to validate the diameter and to protect the always weak joints

Super cool. We should figure out a melter gizmo to process the bottle into the filimant without the cutting. There is a production modulation with the way shown that it's sort of 'self' that I love. In my virtual model the filimant sprays out like silly string... But I kept thinking of a nozzle really short, like inches. If the nozzle were feet long instead and only heated on one end; it would mold the filimant and act like a plug for the low pressure vessel. The filimant going on to the spool is the modulator (anti silly string). The same brilliantly simple modulator. I like you, thumbs up!
