Relighting a photo with Hard Mix Blend Mode

The Hard Mix blend mode has very quickly become my favorite blend mode to experiment with. Every time I use it in a unique way it seems to pull through with flying colors. It really is a remarkable blend mode.
You may be scratching your head at that if you have ever used it before. By default, the HArd Mix Blend Mode is junk, absolute trash really. When you first select it, you will see a whole bunch of pixelated colors that are hideous and almost offensive.
That is because the Hard Mix Blend Mode is controlled by Fill, not Opacity! The lightbulb should be going off now :) One thing to note about the Hard Mix blend mode is that many programs in the photography market include it, but they fail to include a fill slider to control it. The Fill slider acts as a calculation control where opacity acts as an intensity control.
The mechanics behind the Hard Mix Blend Mode never cease to amaze me. As you can see it makes it very easy and fun to experiment with.
In today's tutorial, I am going to show you how I use the Hard Mix Blend Mode to relight photos. This is especially useful for images with a less than appealing Alpen glow look that you want to amplify.
A couple of things to experiment with:
1. The Hard Mix Blend Mode rests critically on your Fill setting... keep it between 10-20% for a natural appearance.
2. Use Blend If to block the Brightest and darkest points in your photo. HArd Mix does some funky stuff to them.
3. Experiment with Brushed Colors, Color Fills, and Gradients. They will all respond differently to the Hard Mix Blend Mode.

I follow a few guys that teach photoshop as most people, but I honestly feel your channel is definitely top 3 and it stands out for sure.I feel at times people just almost click bait at times with their title and its sometimes underwhelming,but I have yet to be underwhelmed watching any of your vids,and I seem to also pick up new tricks I never even knew existed ...thank you for the content

Awesome! Man that feels so good to read. I do use the "click bait" sometimes, I'll be honest, but that's because I KNOW there is something good there for people. I don't do things just to do them and I spend a lot of time ensuring what I am producing is something original and helpful, not just a video for a videos sake :) I appreciate you for seeing that. It means a lot.

Ho Blake, I didn't see this tutorial yet. I have added your 5 tones heat map technique to my latest shots. I think this hard mix technique will complement the 5 tones heat map concept in my workflow. Now it's amazing I really want to thank you because playing around with your watermark and 5 tones heat map tutorials I have succeeded to understand everything you have explained in this very tutorial at very first watch. So here I go for hard mix now. Once again bravo Blake you're an amazing educational person and as you told me before gear is 20% of the thing. The real thing is the craft 👍😉

Thanks for sharing you techniques, brother. I'm always looking for new tricks. What would be the difference between this technique and just dodging through a mid tones luminosity mask with a colored brush? I know, I should experiment and see what it does but I'm curious to know from someone who has a vastly greater knowledge of PS. Is there a different quality to the light or is this just an alternate method? Thanks again
@f64Academy
@f64Academy 5 лет назад
Good question. The difference is freedom I think. An LM mask is helpful but restrictive to certain pixels. I like this technique for the fluid motion of the hand to the photo with a pen and tablet. There is something that feels more free about it to me and allows me to explore my vision like I did when I was a painter. Really, I think it comes down to personal preference.

Fantastic Blake. Could you say something about how to do some of this with Palette Effects 2. I have lots of the actions you give out but trying not to clutter my actions where I can use ZSE and/or Palette Effects. In fact it would be great for us who use those tools and for you to let folks know about how they can do the work of the actions if you add using those tools to these videos when you show actions.
@f64Academy
@f64Academy 5 лет назад
Essentially PE2 has a column on the right side (Column 5) they are already set up for the Hard Mix Blend Mode, the only difference is the white mask. Invert the mask to black and you are free to paint just Like I showed here.

Another great tutorial Blake. I did experience some weirdness when I tried to sample and brush. Set up a blank layer, set to hard mix, took my brush with the colour sampler set to current and below and when I alt-clicked on a colour, Photoshop loaded the colour into the background swatch NOT the foreground. I know there must be a simple explanation but I can't figure it out. Any ideas?
@f64Academy
@f64Academy 5 лет назад
Interesting. I just tried to replicate it and I can't seem to get the same result.
@sjb103052
@sjb103052 5 лет назад
Ok after a lot of searching I found the answer (and as expected its small and obscure) If anyone else faces this issue here's the answer (I'll copy and paste rather than paraphrase): "The eyedropper tool whether directly selected or temporarily selected via 'ALT' with the brush tool feeds what it samples into the ACTIVE color. You can set the Foreground color as active, or the Background as active. If someone were to accidentally click on the BG color swatch itself in the color palette, they would set that one as the active color. It all still remains foreground and background, however, if the BG is set as active, then all future eyedropper samples would update the BG color instead of the FG. Give it a try, open the color palette, click the color that is the BG color, you'll see the grey square around it is now black, it is now the active color (likewise the FG has a grey outline now) Whenever you sample with the eyedropper, it will sample to the BG color. Want to switch back to sampling the FG color. just click that little FG swatch and it will work the way you expect." -- Thanks to a fellow named Dan Lawrence on creativecow forums
