Relikt ERA features two reactives plates of the same thickness. For the purposes of the simulation, it was scaled because the comparative simulation was performed for a rod with a fairly small diameter.
ERA - 2x 12mm High Hardness Armor plate
Pentrator - 19x360mm tungsten alloy rod at 1550 m/s
Target - 145 mm armor plate at 70 degrees

Very interesting. The ERA plates look kind of soft compared to the tungsten projectile, but still had a pretty substantial effect on it. ERA like this works by "feeding" some material to the projectile. It's highly errosive to the rod because it has to go through a lot of material this way. There's also lateral forces the plates impart on the shell but i can't tell how much those did. This feeding can actually cut the rod. I reckon if the plates were thicker, they would have done it
@Deathbomb9
@Deathbomb9 2 года назад
@@dejmianxyzsimulations4174 you're gonna have to explain where you got that ERA plates are harder than tungsten alloy. Where is this information? Because I'm calling bullshit. Do you understand the reason tungsten rods tend to be completely ineffective against armor slopes greater than 80 degrees? Do you understand that if the plates were harder that would make them brittle as all hell, meaning the explosive part of ERA would render them useless because they would just shatter?
@Deathbomb9
@Deathbomb9 2 года назад
@@cordedrexcordedrex6854 typically this type of ERA has a direction and spot its supposed to be mounted to add protection. The plates are usually just acting as additional armor. Relikt claims to work on KE but theres zero evidence to support that claim and theres also little scientific evidence to say that the plates would do anything but induce some yaw to the projectile and only at a minimum level since the speeds are so great. The plate would need to get in front of the projectile continuously and at best it's being pushed up for a moment t but physics takes over as it has little effect on longer threat projectiles. ERA is for use against HEAT, smaller diameter anti tank munitions, and that's about it today. They fail to be effective in most cases and can cause more issues than just adding a little more armor or some sort of composite layers. Tank on tank calls for APFSDS and you'll find that NATO is using ones that are over twice this length and have more mass and a segmented rod which means your plate does nothing in the way of protecting the crew or tank.

No. The plates are not static, there is an explosive substance between them. When the protection unit is initiated, the upper plate begins to act on the projectile from the bottom up, and the rear plate acts from the top down. There is a multidirectional impact on the projectile. The explosive does not react to a hit up to 40mm caliber.

Great simulation. Would it be possible to ask you to try to shed some light on the question of great and immediate practical importance: *some* people "in the field" are trying to increase protection of their tanks by placing sandbags on e.g. front armor plate [as well as turret roof]. That clearly helps by itself. However the question is how those sandbags interact with ERA such as Relict [on top of e.g. T-72B3 or T-90M armor, though actual armor package is of secondary importance.] Would you be able to run same simulations with 300~500mm of sand or gravel on top of ERA plate? Some say that those sand or gravel bags negate ERA effect, though one could argue that they might actually help by slowing down plates after initial burst and by redistributing the momentum. That effect would be on top of the effect of sand/gravel itself.

Hello, I have a question you might find interesting. In this simulation, the impacted backplate is at a very steep angle, and after the era detonates, the penetrator is almost parallel to it, greatly contributing to a reduction in the effectiveness from the higher surface area of the impact. What I am curious about is after the ERA, how impactful is the angle on the damaged penetrator? What if the backplate was 50 or 45 degrees instead of 70, for example? Would the damaged penetrator achieve far greater effect with the parallel property gone? In other words, does this style of heavy era only work when the base armor is already at a steep angle? If you could simulate this, I would be very pleased.

I'm no expert, but it seems pretty interesting because it looks like the ERA doesn't have that much of an effect on the projectile. Like it appears to be mostly intact and doesn't look like its trajectory changes much at all from the ERA. Looks more like its just going through a sheet of paper. But clearly, it *does* have enough of an effect. Is it because the slight change in pitch of the projectile means the impulse is transferred over a larger area, so that energy isn't being focused onto penetrating the same point. Or does it have something to do with the integrity of the projectile upon impact somehow? If it splits up into smaller sections, would the impulse be delivered over a longer time leading to a lower peak force? And would that even make a difference since ultimately the same energy is being delivered the same point? I would be grateful if people with some actual ballistics knowledge could reply with some insights. Thanks.
@jintsuubest9331
@jintsuubest9331 2 года назад
Me no expert but I read enough literature to know a little bit. If you go throught the video again, you clearly see the projectile with the era has many cracks and separation. Now, imagine the rod as a drill bit. And the armor is a piece of material you want a hole throught it. The projectile with era can be thought as a bit with cracks and is crocked along the axis. So a good condition 3/8in bit will cut a 3/8 inch hole. The bad condition 3/8 inch bit will cut a 5/8inch diameter crater that has jagged edges and what not. And the era is a moving plate. It is essentially feeding material Infront of the rod. Regardless of projectile, if there is more material, it will perform worse. There are many things happening. And this is as simple as I can reduce it.

Kontakt 1 ERA can only affect HEAT Munition such as RPG 2 and Early Version of BGM 71 Tow Kontakt 5 ERA is an Heavy Explosive Package for Tank that can drastically decreased the penetration of APFSDS round I'm not sure on how it works but maybe because a much more thicker plate and new Explosive Element Relikt is a Third Generation ERA it's pretty similar to Kontakt 5 but the different is Kontakt 5 only have one metal plate while Relikt have two plate as you can see in the video

@Slavkovic_Predrag 2 года назад
He probably can't since he would have to simulate few shaped charges at same time and it would probably get an error or it would take days to complete. Plus i think it wouldn't have done much against tungsten projectiles since it's only good against steel rods since it cuts them into peaces.
@jintsuubest9331
@jintsuubest9331 2 года назад
@@Slavkovic_Predrag The demanding stuff, multiple nera plate sim with rod, already take about 100hours, and can sometimes goes up to 300hours. Multiple scj/efp would take weeks, assuming it doesn't give error. He tried nizh and the solution time increase exponentially, blew pass 3000h and is increasing. And the mechanism of defeat is the same as any other era. Introduce lateral force to the rod hoping to get a crack/separation.

Can you come up with your own composite armor made of steel+rubber+textolite+ceramics+air so for example: 50mm Steel 10mm Textolite 5mm rubber 3mm steel 20mm air 20mm steel 5mm rubber 20mm ceramics 5mm rubber 20mm steel Against 829s or Russian Lakalo or Svinets?
@jintsuubest9331
@jintsuubest9331 2 года назад
If you have a choice, don't use textolite. If you don't have a choice, still don't use textolite. And rubber should be stuff between 2 very elastic plate, neither 20mm of steel nor ceramic is very flexible.

The warhead on an ATGM is HEAT some like the Javelin are dual changed the damage is caused by the HEAT warhead and velocity isn't particularly important. What is important is the power of the warhead. I think this person has done some HEAT simulations already. If not I have definitely seen others that do these simulations do HEAT rocket/missile simulations.
