The Tiger Woods hype in 1996 was undeniable, but several pros were waiting to see what the then 20-year-old really had teeing it up in the heat of competition with the best players on the planet.
Curtis Strange sat down with Tiger before his PGA TOUR debut in Milwaukee and spoke candidly about his expectations and mental approach to professional golf. That's when the line of all lines was said.
After Tiger tells Strange, a two-time U.S. Open winner ('88 and '89), that its in his nature to win and nothing else matters, Curtis says, "You'll learn." Followed by a laugh and
Fast-forward 1997. Tiger now has 4 TOUR wins, including the Masters. Curtis and Tiger meet again during the Byron Nelson in Texas, and all he can do is laugh.

It's because at the time, 3-4 wins was considered a stellar season and usually got you player of the year if it included a major. Back then everyone wanted to drag him through the dirt. Here's this young black guy wiping the course with old white dudes, and they didnt know what to do about it. Like my dad said in 97 after Tiger got his first Masters "He's going to change golf forever". Sure enough he did.

Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Sam Sneed.........all 3 were as good as Tiger Woods. Tiger's win rate is so high because he is no longer playing. ALL GOLFER'S win rates plummet when they hit their 40s and keep playing the PGA tour, we wont see Tiger go through that because he isn't playing.
@lakeozarkrei3767
@lakeozarkrei3767 2 года назад
@@TMar1961 Read my post again... I said these guys as in the current players... who weren't even alive when Snead and Hogan were playing and Jack was well past his prime. And no... from a pure talent stand point none were as good as Woods in his prime as far as overall game. Even Jack has said as much... and remember the competition those guys played, especially Hogan and Snead, was not that great. There were maybe a dozen players in their era that made a living at golf. Jack faced a lot stiffer competition but not on the level of the 90's and 00's tour.
@TMar1961
@TMar1961 2 года назад
@@lakeozarkrei3767 The only part of that I agree with is the small amount of competition for Sneed and Hogan. Jack was being gracious, as usual, in referring to Tiger's talent being greater. Jack's competition was as stout and imo more than Tiger's. Other than Phil, Tiger had no bonafide rival week in and week out while Jack had several. I'd venture more than half of 'modern' golfers would fail at pro golf using the equipment of the 60s and 70s, can you imagine 20yr old Jack starting his career with 1995 equipment? While I'd agree Tiger faced more competition, as in amount of players, Jack definitely faced higher quality with massively inferior equipment.

He shot 9 over on Saturday. I was there watching live. Tiger is literally my idol, but he isn’t the same. It was hard to watch him hobble around. He doesn’t walk with the same swagger, his swing seems almost hesitant. I love him just as much as the next guy, but I think his reign might be coming to an end.

Yes Tiger has a 22.8% win percentage but he only played 359 tournaments; we never got to see him in his declining years like we did Jack Nicklaus who played 595 tournaments, the win percentage would have dropped tremendously. Dont get me wrong, Tiger is still the goat.

There was nothing wrong with Tiger’s attitude. In fact, I’ve always been blown away by his ability to communicate his confidence and still be so polite. Wise beyond his years here. Even at this point in his life he was probably well-practiced in talking to buffoons like this guy who did not believe in him.
