Good breakdown of the cost of shooting a Weatherby. When I bought my .340 Weatherby back in '92, the next thing I bought was an RCBS Rock Chucker II reloading kit. Taught myself how to handload, with the tutelage of a co-worker who also suffered from Weatherbitis, and never looked back.
Very interesting, I have reloaded for years and never bothered to work out the difference in price. Because I am a long range competition shooter, I did not have any alternative, because factory ammo is not suitable for the high level shooting.
Old video, but about 4 years ago to this, I was able to buy up 6 boxes of Weatherby branded 180gr spire point (.300 wby) at $36 per box. This was at Sportsman's Warehouse. That was a bargain! Very good mule deer round and I don't shoot beyond 350 yards so the bullet inefficiency doesn’t matter. On my reloads, I generally use Berger hybrids over RL26. 215 primers.
I want to share some data with you. Welcome to the 378 Weatherby Magnum. 270 Grain Barnes TSX Factory Weatherby Ammo. Chronograph 1st cold = 3,151 FPS. It is listed at 3,060 FPS. Handles Range like a hot 300 Winchester Magnum. Energy = 5,952 Ft lbs. with a 250 Zero. At 500 yards still has 3,151 Ft Lbs of Energy. My rifle is a 26 barrel Mark V with no muzzle brake. Extremely accurate. No problem shoot a skeet target off the tripod at 300 yards. You have to give one of these a try. It will shoot a 300 grain Accubond & Partition just over 3,000 FPS Jeff
Components are going up, but so are factory cartridges. Reloading allows you to lock in today's prices for some period of time. Those 4k rifle primers I bought 3 years ago keep me shooting.
When I started reloading in the mid 79s the rule of thumb was you save 1/2. Today that has changed. You need to work out costs as you have done. I shoot a lot of 9mm. Working out cost at today's prices I am no longer reloading 9mm. Cost is within 2 cents of factory ammo. I buy factory and keep my components as a future hedge. I also shoot a 300 Weatherby and have for over 40 years. The only factory amm I have put through my rifle is I bought 2 boxes at a garage sale for less than half price of dealer cost. Also at a gun show I found a pile of factory ammo that had been under water. Bought it for less than the cost of brass. The primers and bullets had the green factory sealant on them. Ammo shot perfect. If you are going to reload you need to know costs. I use replacement cost not what I paid for components as you can no longer buy them at that price. Good video.
Great cartridge. My grandad used a pre-64 Model 70 Featherweight in 30-06 shooting 165 Partitions to kill most of the non dangerous big game animals, as well as a couple of inland grizzlies, in North America. I think that says it all.
Nice video! Yes, very expensive to shoot Wby factory ammo. I’m glad you put out a video to show that’s it’s still quite economical to reload. Even in these high inflationary times!
About 10+ years ago I won a Savage Weather Warrior in 300 Win Mag and thought about selling it to help fund a Weatherby Mark V in 300 Weatherby Mag. I did the math and I just couldn’t justify the extra cost, including the extra cost of a Weatherby rifle, even though I reload. So, instead I bought a Leupold with a CDS to compensate for the difference in ballistic performance. As it turns out my 300 WM shoots 5/8” groups with a 180 Accubond at 3030. Bull elk simply can’t tell the difference.
Good breakdown! As much as I don’t like that primers are $100 per 1,000 these days, it’s still just adds $0.06 per rd. Brass is the most expensive component for sure. I made a great excel spreadsheet with equations to automatically calculate the cost per rd to reload.
It costs very little for me to shoot my 300 Weatherby, I have 200 pieces of range pickup brass, have 190gr Hornady spire points I bought for 4 cents apiece Alcan primers I bought for $8 a thousand, with H-450 powder that was free, so a box of 20 is less than $1
Great video! The one cost you didn’t include is your time. It’s ok that you didn’t. That’s up to the individual on the value they put in their time. Investor type folks will tell you to take at least what you make an hour at work to equate that into any dyi project to determine if it is worth your time to do it yourself. I reload because I find it therapeutic. I like the precision of it. I always feel good after a good reloading session. However “time is money” is very true and when you factor that in, the gap gets a heck of a lot closer. Get yourself some lighter bullets and let the Roy breath some fire like intended. Nothing like cutting its nuts off with that heavy of bullet.
Let’s be real, we’re not saving money reloading. Reloading just allows you to tailor the ammo to your rifle. I mean yes if we compare to a box of factory ammo to a box of reloaded ammo it is cheaper but the time invested, the money we’ll spend on the equipment and the more money will keep spending on components because now we’re self sufficient will surpass buying factory ammo by far. Personally I’m not doing it to save money, im doing it to get the best out of my rifles.
I inherited or was gifted much of my reloading equipment. But you will usually shoot more when you can make your own ammo. I enjoy reloading as a hobby so I don't put the cost of my time as a factor. But yes the main reason to reload is to have better accuracy.
@@ReloadingWeatherby exactly, ppl who might want to get into it don’t realize the time it’ll take to learn or the time spent reloading. Like you, a hot cup of coffee and the reloading bench beats any day of the beach. That being said, if you have all the equipment and components in the long run you’ll shoot more and spend less.
Well before the pandemic knocked everyone and everything on its ass, I found a guy at a gun show in Indiana selling 220 grain SP, 340 Wby factory loaded ammo for $55 a box. Said nobody was buying it because it was "too expensive..." and, "...it's an oddball cartridge." He sold me two boxes for less than $100. Bought 'em primarily for the brass. Shoudda bought 'em all. Who'ddaa thought it just a couple years later?😖
@@mr.noneyabidness it’s just weatherby being greedy, they’re literally the only company making weatherby ammo, so you’re stuck paying their prices IF you don’t reload…. Supply and demand I guess
Where are you finding components I haven't seen any large rifle primers or magnum ones on the self for going on three year's and medium and slow powders are also none exsitant in my area.
Believe it or not,thats the first time anyone has broken out factory ammo vs self loaded ammo. But,and I dont know this,how hard is it to purchase all the components needed? If you cant get one,you're screwed,no?
