In this video, I change where my pull down attic ladder is located. I am totally gutting my third bedroom so I decided that I didn't want to have the pull down ladder in that room any more. So I decide to move the ladder to the hallway to have better access.

Moving this out of the bedroom to the hallway makes perfect sense to me. You won’t have to move any furniture to use the attic steps.

For the pads under the steps, I started to use a Velcro pad situation. I nail or glue to the wood then Velcro the pad that makes contact with the floor to it.

Yeah if it happened above the bedroom it would have hurt. I somehow stepped on a top plate and avoided nails into my foot. Probably would have gone down hard if it was over the bedroom. Great for an outtake though haha. Thanks for watching!

I keep a small rubber backed bathroom rug that gets pulled out when ever my stairs are down to not scar my flooring. Attic stairs leak energy like a sieve(hot and cold). I built a a 'chimney cap' using Owens Corning FOAMULAR 150 2 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. R-10 Unfaced Squared Edge Insulation Sheathing/silver foil tape jointed that fits over the 2"x2" edging on the attic decking. Light weight, easy to lift and lay to the side.

This was the first major thing I did almost 13 years to my old home. We had a 2 1/2' x 2 1/2' square opening with just a piece of sheetrock as the "cover" being held up by trim as the attic access (was an old 1951 home in South Mississippi). Luckily the beams were positioned to align right down the long part of the hallway and perfect so that when I added bracing and put support in, the ladder aligned perfectly in the middle of the hallway using one of the long attic braces as the side-support. I was able to break up that sheetrock square to fill in the missing gaps on the side too without having to purchase anything more. Once mud and trim were done, you couldn't even tell it wasn't always there. Super easy fix.

i can hear those sleighbells ring when you were cutting the ceiling drywall. and lmao i did the same thing with the felt pads on my attic stairs....it was too late though, there was already huge gashes from the guys who built the house constantly going up into the attic. i used a felt pad and cut it to size so it covers the whole contact surface of the ladders foot instead of using the individual little circles

Those joists are in tension to prevent the rafters from spreading, I thought you could only put attic stairs between joists for that reason. Is that true or is it fine if you head it off like you’ve done here?
@TheFixerHomeRepair
@TheFixerHomeRepair Год назад
Hey Jake! Every situation is different... That is the case with most houses that the joists tie into the rafters to prevent the walls from bowing out. In my last video I showed how mine were not tied in at all (when I sister up the joists, they will be). so I was not worried about cutting one out since it has stood strong since 1946. On the other side of the house they are tied into the beam that is in place in between two roofs holding it there. Kind of hard to explain but typically as long as you are not cutting out a bunch of joists and you tie everything back together with the proper framing and with joist hangers, you should not have a problem. Again, every house is different, this video was just to show how I did it. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

How come you put a double 2x6 on one side but only a single 2x6 on the other side of the opening?
