reMarkable 2 Review - Is it worth the high price tag?

UPDATE: Some of the features in this video I mentioned, such as:
- Google Drive and Dropbox integration
- Handwriting conversion
- Screen Share
Now require a $7.99/£7.99 a month subscription fee. They were free a couple of months ago when I made this video. This makes this product even more expensive to own by another $95.88 per year.
Owners who purchased the device before the changes came into place get the features for free.
They have knocked off £100 of the price, but, you will pay this back to them within a year because of their subscription service.
----
The new Amazon Kindle had almost zero ghosting (where you can see the text from the previous page), showing the technology in this is outdated.
A full review of the reMarkable 2. At up to £649 ($649) we take a look and see if this is worth paying double the price of an iPad for the reMarkable 2. We also take a look at the essential accessories you should get with your reMarkable, the Marker Plus, and the folio case.

For those who are watching this video after October 2021 and are interested in the RM2: the device is now even more of a bad value for money with the introduction of the subscription plan, especially compared to the competition. Most of the features you'd expect from e-ink note takers are locked behind a paywall, and if you buy the device sans the subscription, they actually artificially increased the price of the flip-cover and the premium stylus. There are much, much better e-ink note takers out there, some even running full-fat Android (e.g. Boox devices). And most of them start out much cheaper than the RM2, making some of the cons mentioned in this video inherent to the device class (especially the nibs wearing out) less of an issue.

For your purpose, I think the Ratta Supernote A5X will be much better - at the cheapest configuration, it comes with stylus with an everlasting nib and a darn good flip-cover. Its also way less fragile than the RM2.

Thank you so much for the depth of this review man. I literally filtered search and selectively picked out this video for a purpose and you delivered. I do not trust brands like ReMarkable have availability in a store like Best buy to not already have lined & "algo-wash" reviews of their product, especially of it's the main product. That being said, for me an IPad is not a suitable alternative though appealing. Looking for something functionally the exact same as a remarkable without the villainous gimmicks & overreaching price tag duo. Anyways subbed.

I just got one of these as a gift. Sure it’s expensive but personally I’m really enjoying it. I think the best feature is all the different templates. I want to get into story writing, so the idea that I can have story boards and checklists in the same file is pretty useful. It’s a fun device. Online reviews seems to steer away from this product, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Seems like you will be the one paying for those price gouging nib bundles as much as any engineer would. The more I learn about this device the more it looks like a fancy car and less like a modern desktop tool. As an engineering student it's hard enough to lug around a big fat binder full of math calculations. This review is basically telling me to keep buying mechanical pencils and graph paper since this technology is being used for both profit and prestige instead of practical applications and reducing waste. A device like this not be wasted on a fucking fashion statement.

This is the best review for the Remarkable, and yet it is unpopular. Maybe because it is honest and talks about how the notebook is not worth the price. I love taking notes and I have way too many notebooks laying around with various notes. So I've been looking into digital notebooks. But none of the reviews seem to really talk about the hassles of these things like you did. Also, losing a 10$ moleskin sucks. Imagine losing 600$.

Thank you. I do find reviews where I say how great something is usually does far better than reviews where a product needs improvements. I guess most (not all) people watching reviews are interested and excited about a product and do not like being disappointed in hearing it needs work or may not be worth it. Thanks again. All the best.

No matter how fancy it looks, everything about this product screams "money making scam" - No pen included? - expensive consumable tips? - A monthly "connect" plan? I missed those in your review. These monthly subscription plans make replacing tips look cheap. Only the most expensive package gives you DropBox and Google Drive integration. (and some other *unspecified* advanced options) I hate products that lock you in for a monthly service charge.
@TruthReviews
@TruthReviews 2 года назад
Oh when I had it I wasn’t prompted to join any plan. Maybe they have added that recently. Either way the last thing this product needed was to cost people even more.
@Ronda_L_Harris
@Ronda_L_Harris 2 года назад
Correct. The Connect subscription came after October 2021, according to their website. I’m so glad I saw this review! You’re absolutely right in that the LAST thing they needed to do was make this even MORE expensive! I’ll just make do with my iPad for now. This is insanely priced to be so limited.

@@TruthReviews Better get used to it. Its how businesses make money now. You buy the product, they lock you in with proprietary services. 😕 Usually they lure you into the services with a cheap initial investment. These guys weren't sure they would earn back the cost of the device , so they charge you both for the device *and* for the added services. (And you still need to pay for dropbox separately unless you use a small free account)
@TruthReviews
@TruthReviews 2 года назад
Funny you say this. During Christmas a family got out their karaoke machine… guess what… it is now £6.99 a month to use when it was always free before. For this device though it is a killer. Their dishonest discount scheme is also something that leaves a bitter taste.

I ordered one of these about a week ago, expecting it to arrive later this week. I want a device that replaces the stack of legal pads on my desk (one for each client) and help me keep track of the one off tasks that come at me fast and furious from each of those clients. However, the biggest thing I want is the ability to write notes prepping for or during a meeting and be able to silence the phone and email apps or leave them in the other room. I have a Surface Pro 6 computer but writing on it is terrible and it comes with the constant distractions. I bought a Kindle for reading with the same idea to be able to leave the bings and pings of the phone and PC behind and read without distraction. I'm content to have one more device because that's what I have now it's just that the current writing device is a legal pad. I'm eager to see if this can replace my entire note writing world.

I am a writer and I have literally HUNDREDS of spiral notebooks, composition books, and journals stuffed in a walk in closet from decades of writing longhand. I do all of my initial book and article writing longhand, then have to type it up. I would love to have a device like this that allows me to automatically upload my morning's writing to my computer and convert it to editable text, then send it back to the writing device formatted as manuscript for longhand editing. It would change my life. Any device that could do this well--and NOT have ANY distractions on it like a tablet does--would be worth a lot of money to me. Would the Remarkable be a good choice for my needs? Is there something else out there that would be better?
@TruthReviews
@TruthReviews 2 года назад
A few months back I would have said yes. But the monthly subscription and the cost of replacement nibs can add hundreds to the cost of owning this over a couple of years. There are a lot more similar devices on their way and there is the Supernote which I am trying my best to get hold of. But they do not sell in the UK currently. Personally I think the monthly subscription is just too much and they can up the price as they wish. Without the subscription you lose almost all the features that make this worth while, including the handwriting to text translation.

In a year I would probably use more than 40 tips and for the price that would be impossible to maintain.

Ideal for note taking, you save lots of paper and keep your desk clean. But it doesn't support Chinese language, which creates tremendous troubles if you convert the Chinese characters, or want to read imported documents/articles in Chinese, that includes all formats, epub and even PDF. Don't buy if you need to use Chinese. Hope the language would be eventually added.

I’ve been looking for a digital notebook to replace all my journals and such. I take notes and sketches a lot for many different hobbies. And I didn’t want to buy an iPad or Kendal cause I don’t want to be distracted by all the other apps and basically be paying for many features I wouldn’t be using. The remarkable 2 seemed like the perfect solution. But it looks like it has many issues and gosh why is it so expensive? It’s the same price as an iPad! And I despise that this company is trying to upswell with accessories. I won’t support it. This device should come with the pencil (the fact they have 2 different pencils is also annoying) and a protective case. A full package in one. Looks like I’ll keep searching… hopefully reMarkable will stay true to there vision and not get caught in money and charging for expensive accessories like Apple.

I would highly recommend NOT buying this product (remarkable 2 or 1). It's still buggy. Took me over an hour to activate the device. You can't use the device until it's activated with their network. The pad needs a pen to be able to use it. And they charge for the pen. It does not come with the pen! They took all the good features and made it part of the paid subscription service! You are better off buying an iPad or Samsung S7 tablet that comes with the pen. You can watch movies, listen to music, do emails, and so many other things with the iPad or Samsung. Writing may be better on the reMarkable, but if you buy one of those screen saves for your tablet, it may bring the writing experience close.
