I really enjoyed this review, you can keep a very still voice that doesnt become monotone. nice appraisal of all 4 and the strengths and weaknesses, no B roll, no cuts, no overexcitement, just like. IDK, a level review.

I quite enjoy the reMarkable for reading & writing without distractions. I also enjoy the no-glare viewing. That being said, the iPad does have more power. My laptop does everything an iPad would do and more; along with a smartphone, yeah, the reMarkable is the near-perfect device for notes and reading just like it was designed for....
@jakobgronkjaer
@jakobgronkjaer 3 года назад
Yep, it's definitely entirely down to an individual's specific use-case as to which device is the most suitable. Even then in some cases all of the options may well be a compromise to some extent.... give me a backlit e-ink tablet as thin as the RM2, with the speed and power of an iPad Pro and compatible with the Lamy Al-star pen with a eraser on the top like the Norris Jumbo, and I'd be 100% content. :D I can dream, can't I??

Nice that you can push the page up like that. That is cool. I'm sorry you had an accident. Hope you get healed up soon. Interesting about the margins and menu. I am batch 11 and the plan is to use it to write, write and write some more. But the other two have excellent features as well. I can see that for sure. Very cool that so many products are out there.
@jakobgronkjaer
@jakobgronkjaer 3 года назад
If you have no need of the features on the other devices then the RM will make you very happy for sure. I thought that the ‘restrictions’ would annoy me but actually if you really just view it as an digital replacement for paper then it has definitely got the closest match to writing on the real thing, and saving you heaps of space in the long run and allowing you to organise better through use of multiple notebooks within the device. Having spent a week with the Note Air I just have realised that the extra features are useful to me. Will run a few more tests between the two before I decide for sure which to keep.
@TheHappyWhisk
@TheHappyWhisk 3 года назад
@@jakobgronkjaer The extra features on many of the e-ink devices look useful depending on what someone needs. And it is interesting to see how people use their stuff. Like JB on Morning Coach. His Papyr is super useful for him and that's what I love about all these devices. Something for everyone. My concern is not the features for me, it's the lines and if they are too wonky when writing. I also have the Noris Jumbo, I use it for drawing on my Samsung tablet. I LOVE IT! So fun.

If you would like to erase just a pen stroke on the reMarkable 2 - you can use the "undo" button on the toolbar and this tool allows you to erase pen strokes one at a time or if you click quickly you can easily erase an entire work or drawing. Great review Jakob - I've watched your video twice and I have my own videos about the reMarkable 2, funny enough... Happy Holidays & Happy Christmas!

Having seen that on the iPad, the lack of scroll-to-add-another page functionality on the eInk devices is a problem. When writing on paper, one always repositions the sheet on the table as one fills it up, in order to maintain a good writing posture. Plus there's the uncomfortable bottom edge of the device. I really hope eInk tablet manufacturers fix that.
@jakobgronkjaer
@jakobgronkjaer 3 года назад
In theory it’s possible to do on eInk but it’s like if you can scroll a webpage or pdf document - it doesn’t look pretty due to the refresh rate. You can reposition the tablet on the table too, and to be fair to the onyx and RM they are slimmer than any physical notepad I’ve ever used. But yeah the notability seamless scroll facility was awesome - in reality though it only just made up for the awkward edge of the iPad. Would be lovely if eInk devices could offer it. I would put up with the ghosting for the sake of it. Saying that, the Quirklogic Papyr does indeed have something similar in the form of its unlimited canvas.
@RyougiVector
@RyougiVector 3 года назад
the latest update to the Papyr lets me use the "next page" gesture for adding a new page on the last page of a document. you can also reposition the new page to any location in the file in the "see all pages" screen of a file

hi, excellent review.. I am now about to return back my rM2. I have one question, how would you rate the use of Boox Air as a regular android tablet? Is the processor fast/strong enough? i am looking for an allround device, thats why I dont mind a compromise on the writing experience as long as the tablet function is also good enough...
@jakobgronkjaer
@jakobgronkjaer 3 года назад
I personally wouldn’t consider any e-ink tablet as a replacement for a standard Android tablet or iPad of any sort. The Note Air and similar are Note taking or e-reader devices first and foremost. As a bonus, the Note Air can provide a limited tablet experience such as web browsing, black/white video viewing, gaming etc. But that experience is significantly compromised and not enjoyable. I would pick my phone up, with its smaller screen and no physical keyboard, every... single..time ahead of the Note Air for anything other than note taking and the e-reader. I use Flipboard a lot for browsing and I’m still undecided whether that experience is comfortable on the Note Air compared to the iPhone and iPad.

nice thnx!can you compare the contrast of note air and remarkable 2?it seems like the remarkable has a darker screen
@jakobgronkjaer
@jakobgronkjaer 3 года назад
The Note Air has contrast adjustment, and combined with the backlight you can probably get a more contrasty image from that. The slightly reduced glare from the RM is probably what’s giving the impression that it’s darker. I took another look at it just now and at default settings the RM has more contrast, a (very slightly) lighter white and a (noticeable but also only slightly) darker black. You can bump up the contrast on the Note Air to compensate and adjust for that though. And if you push the contrast all the way to the max then it’s almost like it loses any tonal shading - it’s practically just black and white with no middle ground - at least for note taking. It’s not pleasant at maximum contrast, but you can match closely to the RM if that’s what you wanted to do. 😊

So is this saying the remarkable is the best tablet while Onxy has the best pen?
@jakobgronkjaer
@jakobgronkjaer 3 года назад
Actually, it depends entirely on what you are after, both in terms of function and feel of the device. I have opted for the Note Air personally. It’s worth checking out the second video I did on this too for some further analysis and background if you are undecided, as there are benefits and drawbacks to both. I think it’s a fairly unbiased comparison as I got both but always with the intention of only keeping one. As well as the videos by My Deep Guide and The Morning Coach.

Sidenote; The Note Air has way better functionality for reading (pdf's etc) compared to the remarkable2. It is a better allrounder. Personally i find the Boox Note3 as the most useful e-ink device currently. Note3 has larger and much faster disk compared to Note Air - and I find the Note3 screen marginally better to use.

A few people reported peeling off the paper like / matte screen protector by mistake when they originally got their remarkable. I know that’s what makes the difference. Could also be down to the nib you are using being worn out. The RM nibs on the RM, although feeling tougher than most others also wears down a lot faster.

My ReMarkable 2 arrived a couple of days ago and so far I am not very impressed. I was hoping that it would be better than my iPad Pro for sketching and taking notes. It's definitely not! I also have a textured screen protector on my iPad Pro and to me it feels more paper like than the Remarkable 2. The big disappointment is the software. As far as I can tell, no multi-touch zooming, scrolling or rotation. I have been using the app Concepts on my iPad Pro for sketching and taking notes and it blows this thing out of the water. I am definitely returning it.
@jakobgronkjaer
@jakobgronkjaer 3 года назад
I agree it doesn’t rally compare to an iPad for sketching, because the iPad screen is so much better, and to be fair to the designers I think they make that quite clear. Interestingly enough yesterday was one of my big note taking days and whilst I tried to go back to the iPad I ended up reverting to my Note Air almost immediately as I’ve adjusted to the more ergonomic writing experience.

Not if you specifically want the benefits that e-ink provide, mainly the long battery life and glare-free viewing. But as an all-in-one, or media consumption, for sure the iPad wins by tenfold. The comparison was specific to using these devices as a replacement for using paper for note-taking, and as much as I love my ipad for this, the Pencil is 'tenfold' behind a proper ergonomically shaped pen, such as the Lamy Al-star. It really does come to your personal usage needs ;)
