I talk about the perception and necessity of "remasters" during the PS4 and PS5 eras. Main Channel: @ScottTheWoz Twitter: / scottthewoz Facebook: / scottthewoz Instagram: / scottthewoz
Remember in 2012 when sony sold us a bundle of 5 god of war games for $40 and now ten years later we get the last of us part 1 for $70. Modern gaming sure is fun :)
Remember how you (someone who never played Last of Us) paid $60 for Last of Us as a new game? (PS3) Now people (who have never played Last of Us) can pay $70 for Last of Us as a new game. (PS5) Or they and you can wait 4 months for it to become a $40 game. I really don't understand how you people can complain. You literally have no argument. You have no stakes. You either already own it, so what do you care about waiting. Or you don't plan to get it again, so what do you care about how much it costs.
@@thedarkemissary Look, I don't want to argue with you. I'm just saying the remake of tlou does not need to be $70. Many remakes and remasters, and even collections like the crash and spyro trilogies were $40, and those offered more than what the remake of tlou offers. The game isn't even 10 years old, it didn't need a remake, it had a perfectly fine remaster on PS4 that is still accessible. Understand that people are upset because instead of remaking games that could benefit from remakes, or making a new game, they do things like these. There needs to be a limit.
.....Uh, the God of War games already existed lol. The HD versions were quick ports and touch-ups. Last of Us Part 1 is a remake for PS5 gen. It can't use the old assets so they have to rebuild. It more or less has the budget of a new IP.
Unfortunately, we're just at a point where video games take fucking forever to make. Although I don't know why people are complaining about less exclusives, less exclusives is a good thing.
You can either: A) Get the PS4 version, which is playable on both PS4 and PS5, comes with the PS5 upgrade, and possibly costs less than the PS5 version. or B) Get the PS5 version, which is the same game, but only playable on the PS5. At this point, the only reason to buy PS5 versions of games is for that white-banner box art.
And then I lose out on all of the visual and performance upgrades. Seriously, if I wanted my game to look and run like it did on PS4, I'd have just kept my PS4. What the fuck?
Hands down the best collection/remaster of this generation has to be Halo MCC. It was really rough at launch but now, being able to play all 6 games plus with their respective multiplayers and being able to queue up for any of them is fantastic. Aswell as the recent addtion of playing custom games. Makes you really feel like you didnt miss anything from the original titles. Sure with other remasters and collections, they let you play just the story, but they also miss the community from the original game and the reason why people loved the game
Not to mention with the recent shutdown of all 360 online services, were it not for the MCC, the online multiplayer community for Halo 3, 4 and Reach wouldve been gone for good (save for some niche communities potentially running private servers). With the MCC, not only can you revisit the classic and iconic Halo CE and 2 multiplayer (already long gone by now on the original Xbox), you can continue to play Halo 3, Halo 4 and Halo Reach online as if nothing happened.
I got that on game pass to prep for infinite. Never played halo in my life. Played mostly in order, and no I can say with an unbiased OPINION, that reach and 2 are best in the series.
The most important thing about rereleases is that, usually, they have ALL the content and bug-fixes on-disc, including DLC. So you get the "Definitive Version" of the game and get to keep it!
@@steelbear2063 You are right, for some games where the print qty's are quite low or for some other reasons, sometimes you need to jump the gun, but not often and its hard to know when a game just released if you need to buy right now. Usually though you can wait for at least the 1st price drop 😁.
Exactly the ps3 it’s just a ps2 in terms of games it has exclusives sure but half of the library are just ps2 titles on HD which looks awful cause ps2 titles some not all aged like milk I’m terms of visuals and on widescreen Jesus’s
The only difference is that the PS2 remasters on PS3 were cheaper than the exclusives at launch, about $30-40. They had actual enhancements to the games such as being able to play in native 1080p and 16:9.
Small collection then. There were only about 68 officially remastered titles on the ps3 about 4.7% of the total ps3 games available. Only 32 games are ps2 games meaning that just over 2% of the ps3 library is made up of ps2 remasters. You’re miles off.
the only one of those games that crashes if you try to play it on the PS5 is the first Uncharted game. whether it's disc or digital, you get to a certain point and the games crashes and it'll keep doing it. I'm guessing that why they released the PS5 later on. they should have just released a patch.
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I always advocate for remasters/re-releases being done. I got to experience SO many games from past generations due to this, as someone who grew up strictly on Nintendo consoles. The Crash Bandicoot Trilogy, Spyro Trilogy, Uncharted Trilogy, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Mega Man Classic/X Legacy Collection, I can keep going all day. So I always support remasters, I see them as inoffensive/harmless at worst.
Same, it always helps me with games I missed the chance to play like Stubbs the Zombie for example or MediEvil especially since it is now my favourite video game ever and you can unlock the original PS1 version by completing a side task in the remake.
This is absolutely nothing wrong with them inheritly, the problem is companies charging more then what they are worth. All of remasters recently are only a generation or 2 old and have very little to no improvements. That is specifically the kind of “remaster” Scott is talking about.
@@itsonlyme112 The graphics were remade, yes, but the games still control and play exactly how they did back then (at least for the most part, minor differences here and there). That's why I still lumped them in because they're mostly exactly the same, unlike the brand new Crash 4 which is just it's own experience.
Scott, you know since you owned uncharted 4/lost legacy you could've gotten Uncharted Legacy of Theves for 10 us$? If you put either game disk in, you could've bought the game digitally for really cheap. I'm not sure if Sony is still doing this, but it is how I got the game, since I had uncharted 4 already.
Technically, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart can only run on PS5 because the fast storage is required for the "rifts between levels" to function without a loading screen.
@@RodaMoonknight thats different. The portals in Portal use data from the same level. In Rift Apart, the portals have to load in data from entirely different levels.
@@onerandomguy4832 Apparently most people did care since PS5's are still limited availability. The big improvements are in framerate anyway. Rift Apart runs at 60fps while R&C for PS4 runs at 30.
I got my PS5 because my PS4 was having issues, so it made more sense to get a PS5 over a new PS4. Besides Dead Space remake though, there's nothing I've really played thats next-gen only
Much like the PS3 and PS4 in it's first 3 years, This is one of the reasons why the PS5 is currently not worth getting for as much as it costs, I whould rather wait for more exclussive software and refreshing expireinces + a price drop.
Does Scott know that his PS4 disc of Uncharted 4 (or Lost Legacy, either works) would've unlocked the PS5 versions for $10 as opposed to the...I'm gonna assume $50 that he spent on the PS5 disc?
@@onerandomguy4832 Except it literally does. His whole point is that it's insane that it costs $50 for just those two games, when other collections have received full on remakes for less, and how you can just play the original PS4 versions of them on the PS5. Except he neglects to mention that if you own JUST ONE of the original games in this collection (which most PS4 owners do, the game was packed in with a majority of consoles), be it physical or digital, you can get the PS5 version by just upgrading for $10.
For me most of these remasters are just these games coming to PC for the first time. And if they are gonna go through the trouble of releasing them for PC it makes sense to put them on ps5 as well
The gap between consoles in terms of visuals is reaching the point where you barely tell the difference because a lot of the games are still using the same engines as games from the previous gen and games with hyper realistic graphics have kinda already hit their ceiling or close to it.
That's why I won't buy the PS6. The difference between current generation and next generation will be even smaller, so I think there will be many new games on PS5 even when the next generation has been out for a while
I just wish they would of made more. I want the Ratchet trilogy or Resistance. Jak as an affordable physical copy. All of those and God of War 1, 2, and the PSP games playable on my PS5 so I don’t have to keep a PS3 plugged in would’ve been great.
The only noticeable difference for me with the Uncharted 4 PS5 remaster was 60fps boost. It's annoying that I had to pay 60 dollars for what was essentially a 60fps patch (which the Last of Us Part II got for free) but it makes a huge difference to me. I know it's a first world problem but 30fps makes my eyes bleed lol. It seems like 60fps is the new standard with this new generation and I hope that keeps going
@@DiskusGames well even then, the REAL new standard is having graphics options. you have those die hard "4k raytracing" goons, and the performance mode
It's safer to remake an already successful game than to make new game. Remakes and remasters have their place, but if the game is already playable via backwards compatibility, it looks like a cash grab.
You're not wrong. I still can't decide whether I should just buy the remaster or play the original versions of some games because the differences are insignificant unless there is additional content included.
@@GenerationZ313 most of the time unless it's a price issue, 9 times out of 10 there is literally no reason to play the original over the remaster, especially if it's on PS5 where the much faster loading times make it superior by default.
Actually , if you have uncharted 4 for ps4 and you upgrade the game for ps5, paying the 10 bucks, you also get the uncharted the lost legacy for free, i did that and it worked, so thats nice at least for sony.
9:44 that’s exactly how I feel. I treat my PS5 like a PS4 Pro Max since I don’t have any games that really take advantage of the hardware (Alan Wake 2 and Spider-Man 2 for example). If we get a PS5 Pro that’ll probably feel like true next gen. Maybe 4K 60fps minimum or more 120fps.
@@GodOfWarConnoisseur I did give it time. Twice as much time as PS2. I got one from PS Direct and sold it. Aside from technical hardware improvements, there's no reason to own it. Many games still play better on Xbox as well due to limitations of PS4 Pro versions of games.
@@diamond_dogs Not just GTA3 and MGS2, but also Devil May Cry, Midnight Club, Smugglers Run, Silent Hill 2, TimeSplitters, Ridge Racer 5, and SSX to name a few more.
Honestly this is why I’m still in no rush to grab a ps5, as much as the quality of life stuff would be nice, I’m waiting for amazing software I can only get there. I do think it’s a shame that we are getting less and less new ip through the generations though.
yeah my excuse was I wanted to get it before Final Fantasy XVI comes out next year. and Spider-Man 2 is supposed to come out next year as an exclusive too. hopefully they'll be worth it, but...either way, I do love the PS5. sold my PS4, no regrets so far.
Even if you only play PS4 games they play so much better on PS5. Honestly if you can afford to there’s no reason not to buy a PS5 now if you plan to eventually, you are just having a worse experience.
We consumers really need to start getting pissy about partial collections…if you’re going to ask us to pay for old games, give us more complete collections, the whole series plus spin offs.
To be fair FFVIIR is the only title in that PS5 batch that offered a free upgrade for all those features. Episode Yuffie was $20. If I wanted to play Spider-Man remastered at launch I would have to pay $70 for what should be a free upgrade and an expansion that builds upon its base mechanics less effectively than the thing I paid $20 for.
The problem with something like Legacy of Thieves collection is that if it was any other publisher, an update that minor would be released as a free update. But with Sony, it costs $50 USD.
Scott's being misleading, It was a $10 update for all owners of the PS4 version. In fact, if you only owned one game it'll give you the other for no extra cost. It's actually a great deal. I only owned Uncharted 4 and buying LL alone would have cost $10, so for $10 getting it and a remaster of U4 was incredible.
this gen felt like the most "make a console so next gen that the blockbuster games are sure to follow" but most games were barely using up the PS4 or Xbone so having a huge suite of new tech was cool for God of War, Spiderman and Sony's Astrobot Playroom and no one else needed an update.
What really makes me mad is that no one really cared to do this when generational leaps really mattered. Like it would've so cool if GBC games were remade for GBA or PS1 games for PS2. Another thing that's beyond me is the wild obsession of polygon count and fps. Like when last of us was "remade" everyone was bullshiting about how it feels like a "modern" game now. As if the og wasn't a modern game.
For me as someone who has started pc gaming although i don't have the highest end pc, the most dramatic improvement for me has been load times. I have eliminated the feeling of waiting at a load screen from my life and i cant express how much that has made me enjoy games more. Thats something the next gen consoles do have which i don't think gets the application it probably warrants. That and performance. A new console that runs existing games way better is nothing to turn our noses up at especially since we can play existing games on it
With stylized art design, stuff like "graphics" and "Fidelity" don't matter that much as gameplay. Just look at "Deep Rock Galactic" and "Warhammer Boltgun"
I only got my ps5 back in July, and only did cause my ps4 was barely hanging in there. I've enjoyed my time with the console but I'm waiting for a game that will truly make the ps5 stand out.
The Cowabunga Collection I kinda understand if both versions are the same price, people just like to have certain covers for consistency's sake. Also with FF7R, it had a completely new DLC scenario and I don't think I ever heard of a previous gen game having next gen DLC so it makes sense they went the whole "upgrade route" with that. Stuff like Uncharted though having an entirely new collection with very slight changes at 50 bucks when they could easily just make heavily discounted ports of each just with the PS5 box art is a bit of a headscratcher, ngl.
Uncharted Collection was a $10 upgrade if you owned U4 (which can be bought for $6 used). It included Lost Legacy a new game and a free Uncharted movie ticket at launch. Also personally the 60+FPS, DualSense, loading times, graphics were worth it for someone who hadn’t played them before. These remasters are much better than PS4 gen simply because most have a paid upgrade path except TLOU Part 1 which I think had an outrageous price to buy again.
Although a newer and more well optimized versions of 7th gen games is great, it would've been even nicer if the Xbox one and PS4 just launched with backwards compatibility and focused on games that were actually new.
There are differences between PS4 and PS5 differences of classic style indie games, believe it or not. Take Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. The PS5 version is capable of running at 120Hz / native 4K. On a nice display that supports that it'll look amazing. It's a great game too. Worth checking out. The new Klonoa game also looks and runs better on a PS5 than a PS4.. And don't even bother with the Switch port of that if you can help it.
The Gears community has been trying to get a Master Chief Collection style game for Gears for yeeeeaaaarssssss now. Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection just rolls off the tongue. We NEED it.
@@doodleroar Why not have the best version possible if your going to play it again. I didn't buy a 4k 60 FPS tv to continue to play 1080p games, although some companies are much more fair and upgrade their game for free.
I highly disagree on when you said Ratchet and Clank Rift apart isn’t that big of a jump from the 2016 game. Rift Apart literally takes full advantage of the PS5’s SSD instant load times that they literally turned it into a mechanic. The instant switching wouldn’t have really worked on PS4 unless you had a giant load screen at the beginning of the game. Also the environments and models are giant improvement from the 2016 game, to the point where Ratchets ps4 model looks off, especially with the subpar fur shading.
Pretty sure the "Rifts" effect has been done before as well as shown on Psychonauts 2. If you mean like Fur textures and so on sure, that's next gen and maybe the triggers and Dualsense vibrations but the game overall could be done on ps4. Look at Returnal and how it'll be on PC. It can be done, just like any brand, they try to sell you on with smart talk. The SSD is indeed fast, but we haven't seen a game that actually uses it to a full capacity because most games already feel like ps4 games enhanced. Even more when games weight a lot even if they said they could compress it, look at Horizon Forbidden west
I feel like FF7R and Legacy of Thieves collection are kind of bad examples as it actually showcases something really good introduced in this generation, that being upgrade paths, Itergrade was a literal free upgrade, just intermission cost a little extra which was understandable considering the quality of it. And Legacy of thieves collection also had an upgrade path for 10 bucks for both PS4 discs, meaning you got one of the 2 games free if you didn't own the other game already. Both games run and play significantly better, Uncharted and FF7R both were miracles on PS4 and espeically FF7R was absolutely held back by the hardware, Uncharted uses great motion blur so the lower framerate isn't that noticable, but going from 1080 30 to 4k 60 / 1080 120 on both isn't a minor upgrade i'd say, definitely worth a small upfgrade fee (as long as it's no more than 10 bucks) plus remember it's not like they're wasting years of development time on them, these games were both developed with higher fidelity in mind. And selling them at a more expensive price is defintely no not immeditely devalue the IP, Nintendo is very cautous with discounts or ports for the same reason. It also shows that they're trying to get a great experience across the board, the PC versions for all 4 games you showed being a thing is definitley a factor in some of these definitve editions happening currently.
@@aoBubs yeah I was wrong on that, there have been updates to unlock the framerate so rn it’s at about 4k 40fps with freesync, still a considerable upgrade imo, for 5 bucks there’s no reason not to upgrade if you have the chance
To be fair Sony only charged $9.99 to upgrade to the Uncharted Legacy of Thieves, if you has purchased either of those games on the PS4. The 60/120fps does make a big difference with those.
I’m interested in getting Metroid Prime Remastered for Switch. Mostly because I never played the original GameCube version in the first place. That’s what happened with Skyward Sword HD. I never played the original Wii version so that’s why I got it for Switch and loved it. So remasters/ports for new consoles can be decent ways of reselling the old game to new players that never played it the first time. Especially if the original was on a now obsolete console.
i don’t see why he got mad i would rather play the best version the generations go from 720-1080p 30fps to 1080p 30-60 fps to 4k 60-120 fps with no load times
