Remembering 'Banana' George Blair

We recently lost a Polk County legend by the name of Banana George Blair. Banana George skied at Cypress Gardens as well as many other places in the United States. He continued to ski into the later years of his life and received his nickname by always eating bananas and wearing the color yellow. He will be missed in the Central Florida area.

I was working at publix in Winter Haven. At 15yrs old I saw a older gentlemen wearing a bright yellow shirt tip a lady that bagged his groceries 100 bucks mind you he probably only spent $25 in groceries. I then quickly asked another employee who the hell is that... He replied thats the man Banana George ill never forget his style and spirit even drove off in a all yellow Cadillac... I know the story is long winded but wanted to share that moment with the universe... This man was no gimmick he was every bit of what he portrayed R.i.P. Banana George

I was born in Winter Haven, dad was world champion skier and skied at Cypress Gardens so I grew up in that sport when young. Only stayed in Winter Haven until I was two and then we went back over to Sarasota where family put on ski shows there. Went back to Cypress garden though and I am sure I would have met Banana George but you have a nice story of him for sure.

Even his underwear was yellow. He offered to prove it to me, but I told him I'd take his word on it. He was unique, for sure. Rest in peace, George.

I freakin' snowboarded with him in Steamboat, Colorado quite a bit when I was young. Just randomly thought of him and wanted to look him up. That was 15-18 yrs ago, he was a really good guy. RIP Banana George.

I just randomly thought of the guy and decided to look him up as well and even share my story as well.. he was a hell of a guy

Many years ago, I was on the game show "You Bet Your Life" hosted by Bill Cosby. Each episode had six participants, and we were paired off as couples before the taping began, to compete against the other couples. They teamed me up with Banana George, which actually proved to be more entertaining than being on the game show itself. He actually had a sponsorship deal with I think it was Chiquita bananas, and before he went to Philadelphia for the taping, he arranged for the company to send many cases of bananas to the studio as a gift to the show. By the time we got to the day of our taping, the bananas had been there awhile I guess, and the place reeked of them.
