Jerry Sloan, the Hall of Fame coach who spent 23 seasons at the helm of the Utah Jazz, died in the early hours of Friday, May 22, 2020, at his Salt Lake home. He was 78.
“Jerry Sloan will always be synonymous with the Utah Jazz,” the team said in a statement. “He will forever be a part of the Utah Jazz organization and we join his family, friends and fans in mourning his loss. We are so thankful for what he accomplished here in Utah and the decades of dedication, loyalty and tenacity he brought to our franchise.”
Sloan died of complications from Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia, diseases he’d been fighting since at least 2015.

Coach, thank you for making me fall in love with the Utah Jazz. Thank you for defining what success meant, what heartbreak meant, what resilience meant, and what confidence in oneself can do. You are not just a symbol of the Utah Jazz. You were, are, and will always BE the Utah Jazz and its legacy. I vow to never forget you till the day I die as a Utah Jazz fan, as a kid who grew up all his life in Utah. Rest in power and peace, Coach.

Jerry Sloan and Norm Van Lier in the backcourt for the Bulls was a feisty duo. Nobody loved playing against those two. I love the old NBA.

He backed it up as a coach just as much as a player. I've always had the ultimate respect for Jerry Sloan.

Lakers fans claimed they deserve a championship after Kobe’s death, Jazz fans now have a stronger case. It’s truly heartbreaking that Jerry will never see this Jazz win a championship. Whenever the season starts up again the jazz need to win one for him. I can’t think of a more deserving team at this point.

Both deaths are sad, but Kobe’s was more tragic since he was still relatively young and to die from a helicopter crash was a freak accident. At least Jerry was able to live a full life to 78 even though his last four years were battling Parkinson’s. RIP to both.

There have been a lot of coaches in the NBA landscape but one coach I always respected was Jerry Sloan. He was tough, hard-nosed, but really enjoyed the game of basketball. He always gave his team a chance to win. He was a great NBA player as well as a coach. RIP Jerry. You will be missed. Thanks for the memories! God Bless!

I’ve been a jazz fan since I was 14, I live in Utah from 1996-2008 when I moved to canada(Newfoundland) and just heard the news over the weekend and it hit me like I lost a family member. I remember meeting him at a maverick convenience store and he was a true gentleman. He will me missed a lot from people that followed the jazz from early 90’s to the end of his career. It sucks that he won’t be there when they build him a statue, it should have been build long time ago!!

The great general who built the Stockton & Malone era was impressive. The completeness of set offense is in the realm of art. 1221 wins in 3rd place. A legend of the Bulls as a player and a player who remains in history. I wish you all the best.
